Which Analogue Modeled Synth?

Which Analogue Modeled Synth?

2003-05-23 by rayisfab

Sorry more questions! Which analogue modeled synth would be a good
compliment to the XL7? I've seen the Novation K-Station Rack, Access
Virus module, Clavia G2 Rack, the Waldorf modules and a few others
advertised. I've listened to the Virus and the K-Station Rack demo's
but can't make up my mind yet. I think the Virus sound cuts through
more while the K-Station seems to sound richer.

I'm making Trance and Electronica. I can only afford one module at
the moment so unfortunately I have to choose otherwise I'd buy them
all. My synth programming knowledge is rudimentary so I'm looking
for a module that provides really useful tweakable presets.

Well, you could always be cheap like me and buy lots of little groove
boxes. I have a Korg EA1, ER1 and Yamaha DX200 and they all sound
great with my XL7 - dueling basslines from the EA1 and the XL, panned
off center - deep, deep deep! What I did was go to the store and try
out the boxes together, that convinced me. A good music store will
let you do this.

I'm still waiting for my XL-7 to arrive, but I can put in a good word
for the Access Virus - and I'm sure rEalm will back me up on that.

The Novation stuff has a very nice sound and the Waldorf gear is very
versatile, but I think the Virus and its phenomenal filters does the
best job of nailing the rawness of analog and would therefore be a
better match for the warm digital samples of the E-mus. Unless
there's a must-have feature that would be a dealbreaker for you it
really comes down to personal preference though.

Re: Which Analogue Modeled Synth?

I also vote for the Virus. I love my Virus KC, but I don't have a
bad word to say about any of the synths you named. They all sound
great so, it's largely a matter of personal taste.

If this is your first analogue modeling synth, you may want to try
something less expensive first to see if you really like programming
your own sounds. Some people find that they are happier using a ROM
based module (like the XL-7) or a sampler. Not everyone loves to
program.

Of course, even if you find that programming is not for you, the
Virus C comes with 1024 presets and there are at least that many more
available, for free, through the Access web site.

i'd say the clavia nord rack, IMHO. i have the nord modular, which
is an intense programming box, but even it's presets kick ass.
the nord lead rack has the same sound architecture.

with the synths you listed, you really can't go wrong with any of
them. pick whichever one you think looks the coolest! or
whichever you can get the cheapest. i want a Virus because of its
sex appeal, but the gear-acquisition madness has to end
somewhere...

The Nord Modular and Nord Lead/Rack have completely different
architectures. (One could argue that the Modular doesn't have a fixed
architecture at all.)

my mistake - thanks for pointing it out. i should have said that
they use the same DSP analog-emulation algorithms. unless
that's incorrect - anyone know - or care? : ) the oscillators and
filters of the two synths sure sound like they're using the same
algorithms.

or maybe all those filter sweeps are just starting to blend into
one...

My setup complete with Nord Modular, Access Virus,
Waldorf Micro Q, Arp Solus, Yamaha CS01 and others
machines.

Believe me that the perfect setup for me is:

Access Virus
Nord Modular
Waldorf MicroQ

With that 3 machines you don\ufffdt need more !

On a similar note, I would hight suggest the Nord Modular. It has been
discontinued too, but it's still a great unit! Check out www.novamusik.com
they are blowing out brand new Nord Modulars for $949-$999! I don't work
with them, I just take adavange of their great deals! I bought the keyboard
version and it came with a free gig bag, sweet!

I just wanted to second that, I have a Nord Modular KB vers., and it's
great....it can emulate and do more original stuff than anything I have ever
used (even my ex-k2500). It's dropped a large amount in price in the second
market recently, since they announced the discontinuity of software updates
for it, but it dosnt really need anymore.
If buying new though, definately go to Novamusik, in fact, no matter what
synth you buy, look there first, they usually have the best deals worldwide,
not to mention, I live very near there, and the owner is a very cool guy,
who will go out of his way to help anyone sincere out.

hmm...20ms is not ideal to be sure, but have you tested how stable the XL-7
clock is?

Ah, I did not forget it, as I too own a Waldorf MicroWave XTk...there are
times when it can sound very analog, but I see that as the exception rather
than the rule, which is the MW XT is the epitome of (good-sounding) digital.

The real problem with the MicroWave II/XT/XTk is the current state of the
OS...certainly usable, but there are definitely things to watch out for...I
will celebrate the day Waldorf delivers OS 3.0 for the XT (and OS 3.5 for
the Q!).

Not really an analogue modeler though it can do some pretty good analogue
imitations, I highly recommend the Waldorf Microwave XT/XTk.

[xl7] Is it a bug

2003-05-26 by Patrick Dohman

Howdy

Grid record seems to get buggy when shuttling to a different tick.
For example I will drop into grid record select an appropriate note to
edit/record pause select edit bar beat "or use the cursor in the grid
record window" and move forward or backward unpause and 60 to 70 percent
of the time the grid either wont scroll or reflect the current tick or
it might update every bar but the led wont chase. Once in a while after
shuttling around grid record will behave nicely any one else run into
this? Also when in song mode and switching to pattern mode and then
switching back to song mode in order to loop the current pattern the
counter wont update the tick position until the song reaches the point I
switched into pattern mode

Yeah, I love my Virus KC, but my girl has a K-Station too and it's a
really nice synth too. Just depends on how much you want to spend IMO,
and what kinda of sound you want. The Virus is more flexible, but it
costs more too. As far as which one sounds better, that's a matter of
opinion to me, they both sound great, so it's a matter of which flavor of
