Emuser Parts List

Emuser Parts List

2012-07-04 by freddy1771994

Hi,
I'm currently searching the parts for the emuser which is not that easy and cheap if you live in Germany.
I have the following - hopefully not stupid - questions:

In the manual, the part number of the "UA9638C" is obviously not complete. I checked mouser.com (http://eu.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=UA9638C). It shows many different UA9638's. Which one is the one I need?

Same with the "UA9637AC" (http://eu.mouser.com/Semiconductors/_/N-5gcb?Keyword=UA9637AC&FS=True). Which one do I need?

Does anyone has experiences, is it a cool thing and how much did it cost you all in all?
Thank you!
Freddy

!!!! you can not send more than 512kb as a floppy disk

emuser is designed for the emulator II it works like a disk drive no
interest on an Emax

The labelling/coding system of these ICs can evolve in time, that's why I only mentioned the basic "root" identifier of the RS422 ICs.
But since the EmuSer uses DIP packages, the UA9638CP and UA9637ACP can certainly be used; FYI these are the ones that I always use when I build EmuSers.

If you intend to use the EmuSer primarily for transferring complete BANKS between a PC and the Emax/Emax-II, you should consider using SCSI drives attached to the Emax instead of using the EmuSer. Transferring banks through RS422 takes between 30 and 40 seconds; SCSI is much faster. Moreover, if you are using an Emax-II, the banks can only be transferred from PC to Emax-II through RS422 (not the other way around) and the bank should be a 512K compressed bank (so not e.g. a 16 bit 2MB bank). Both restrictions are imposed by the Emax-II operating system, not by the EmuSer or EMXP.

However, if you intend to use the EmuSer for transferring individual samples (WAV files), it can be an attractive alternative for MIDI, because it's much faster.

Hey E-Synthesist,

i am about to build an Emuser for my newly acquired EII. Anyways i am so busy to recap other samplers and upgrade displays to VFD ones i was wondering if you would build one for me, so i could save myself a lot of time. I would pay for it of course.

Best

Re: Emuser Parts List

Well... I'm coping with a major lack of time too.
Maybe when I have a few weeks off (holiday), I can spend a few days to build another small batch of EmuSers.
But I haven't even planned any holidays yet ;)
My job and the ongoing development of a huge maintenance release of EMXP are almost killing me.

Hi Kris,

just want to ask the expert. How much do you think do the emuser parts cost all in all?

I'm wondering if you have any exciting new emax related hardware or software (updates...) plans?

And furthermore I just want to thank you for all your work concerning the emax (emxp...). You really keep the instrument alive!

Re: Emuser Parts List

Cheers for the reply. I think i am going to start myself then, as i already have some of the parts. Thanks a lot for the detailed manual by the way! I'll report on my progress.

Best
André

Re: Emuser Parts List

2012-07-10 by esynthesist

Thanks.
The cost for EmuSer parts slightly depends on the supplier; but especially the parts shipping costs can be annoying (not many suppliers can provide all parts, so typically multiple shipments are involved).
I would say between 30 and 40 EUR.
The time to build the thing should not be under-estimated (hours !), especially due to the required mechanical processing of the case and the print board. Building it on an experimental board can be done very fast ;)

Regarding new stuff for the Emax, I haven't planned a lot.
Nothing at the hardware side. On the software side, EMXP v2.12 will contain bank construction functions for all supported samplers including Emax-I and Emax-II (current version v2.11 only supports construction of Emulator-I banks). Probably also full floppy disk images will be supported (besides EMX, EM1, EM2 files). And there will be some enhancements in the conversion engine for the Emax-I and Emax-II.
EMXP v2.12 will contain some other new features, but these will not be unique for Emax samplers ;)

That's fairly cheap, because the teensy board itself costs 25euros (on german ebay). And the rest has mainly to be imported.
Where do you order your parts? Maybe I did just bad research.

Thank you very much!

Re: Emuser Parts List

I order the Teensy boards directly from PJRC.com (original source). They are only 16 USD (13 EUR).
My local electronics shop in town is providing the UA963xxx RS422 drivers/receivers ICs (I don't know their supplier).
For most other components (resistors, caps, leds, print boards, connectors, wires, case, ...) I'm using Conrad.

I hope this helps to keep costs under control ;)

Hi,

the cost are really not that high. I found all the parts but I cannot find a good cable, housing and cable grommet. Would it be possible that you link the ones you use?

Thank you very much!

So far I'm still relying on my stock of black D-SUB housings, cables and grommets I once obtained from my local store.

But since I'm almost out of stock, I ordered similar parts at Conrad a while ago. These parts are fine, but unfortunately they are not black coloured.
Maybe other online shops have also black versions available.
Anyway, I don't want to particularly recommend Conrad, but since I only have their components and know their part numbers for sure, I will give Conrad part numbers in the following list:
- D-SUB 9 pole Male connector: 742066 (cable connector for EmuSer)
- D-SUB 9 pole Female connector: 742082 (cable connector for Emax)
- D-SUB 25 pole Male connector: 741671 (cable connector for E-II)
- Cable housing for 9 pole connector (EmuSer, Emax) - silver colour: 711764
- Cable housing for 25 pole connector (E-II) - silver colour: 711780
- Shielded 8 wire cable - white colour (this is 50 meters and expensive, but probably you can also buy per meter/inch) 750796
(only 6 wires are required so you may find other cables which can also do the job; I always buy standard 8 wire cables though)
- Cable grommet (optional part): 711586
- D-SUB 9 pole cable bracket (EmuSer construction): 711527

For sure these parts can also be found on other popular electronics shops like Farnell or Mouser.
