Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

2011-11-21 by ditabeardmemo

I recently picked up an Emax SE HD keyboard with the intention of installing a slim floppy and PCD 50B, as the original internal Miniscribe hard drive was dead. I installed the PCD 50B, but I can't get it to correctly format a Compact Flash card. Every time it produces an "HD Format Error" or freezes on "Formatting HD..." indefinitely. In one case, the unit froze while it was saving a bank to the formatted disk.

Here is what I've checked thus far:

1. The machine boots normally from a floppy disk with the PCD 50B installed, and all functions appear to work.

2. When formatting, I tried a floppy disk with the Plus OS 4.0 (from E-Synthesist's Web site) and an original HD OS 1.1 that came with the unit.

3. I tried to format a SanDisk 512 MB card (connected via a PCMCIA adapter) and a SanDisk D2 Flashdisk 20 MB card, but neither worked.

4. I confirmed that the SCSI cable has data line 1 (red stripe) lined up with pin 1 on the PCD 50B.

5. The only jumper on the PCD 50B is for termination. I have all other jumpers removed. This means the device is set to SCSI ID 0 and "Write Protect" is off.

I'm out of ideas for what to try next. Any thoughts?

Have you verified that your SCSI port still works with any drive? That
would at least tell you if it is drive or sampler related.

Hi Scott:

I do not know for certain whether the Emax's internal 50-pin SCSI connection is working correctly. When I received this machine, the internal hard drive was dead and the Emax would not boot from it.

That said, the PCD 50B does seem to respond when I try to format a card. The green light on the front lights up when the formatting begins. The problem is that the formatting never finishes.

Best,
DBM

#1 - put it in a PC with SCSI card and try to format the card there.
Also- you should be able to see the firmware revision that is on the drive and that can help determine / verify the drive is read/write firmware.

#2- I don't know that an Emax 1 will format a 512MB. The largest I ever tried was 256MB.
I don't know what that other D2 flashdisk is... it could be possible that neither of the 2 flash you are trying to use will work properly.
When I search D2 and flashdisk everything I get is in Gigabyte sizes. These drives don't support a card above 2GB.

Hi Ted:

Thanks for the input. Can you recommend a CompactFlash card brand/size that is known to be compatible with the Emax?

Thanks,
DBM

A lot of this info is in a database on the group. But I use MCR-5A PC Card adapters bought off ebay and SanDisk SD and Transflash that are 32MB in size.

You can also use these- I have used them successfully:

I thought the same thing at first, but I have the termination jumper set exactly like this photo from Ted's Web site:

http://tinyurl.com/7yzht4k

SCSI ID 0, termination on, write protect off.

thats your mistake that drive ted uses is not the pcd -50b

it a totally different drive its a spyrus 300 with 2 pcmcia card slots and can run on 2 scsi ids

as it does this with term switching ic instead of the luns like on the pcd-50b

scratch that i was looking at the wrong set of pictures that is a pcd-50b

try a internal terminator on the 50pin scsi idc cable to see if the pcd-50 term is working

do you know if the firmware has been st to the 1 that ted has as that is the correct read and write os

you might only have a read only drive where did you get it from

Re: Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

2011-11-21 by ditabeardmemo

How do I install an internal terminator on the cable? I re-used the original 50 pin SCSI cable from the Emax's internal hard drive.

I don't know what firmware version is on the PCD 50B, but I hope to install it in a PC this week to find out. I purchased the drive new directly from the psism.com Web site about a month and a half ago.

right get it next time from the amiga4000 site as they are cheaper and have the correct firmware

psism stoped selling them for a while but must of got a new batch

if you have scsi on a comp you will be able to flash to the os for it to work

it sounds like its a read only drive

you need an internal pc scsi ribbon usually with 4-7 internal connections and i stick the term on the last connector

Jack, I'm working on this now and am going to put the PCD 50B in a computer this afternoon to check the firmware.

Quick question: Is there a special tool or process you recommend for removing an internal 50-pin SCSI cable from a device? I'm having a lot of difficulty with this because the cable is very snug in the socket, and don't want to force it.

Re: [emax] Re: Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

2011-11-27 by jack

theres a slot in the side of the scsi connector you use a hook tool to lift it

thats the proper way

most people pull on the cable but pul;ling to hard can stretch the scsi ribbon giving bad contact

on the emax i use 2 hook tools at the sides of ribbon cables

So the good news is I got the PCD 50B working! As Ted and Jack noted, the firmware on the unit was read only. I installed the PCD 50B in my PC, re-flashed the firmware and then it worked perfectly in the Emax. I can even confirm that the Emax will format/read/write the 512 MB SanDisk cards.

The bad news is that I can't get the slim floppy working because my soldering/cutting skills aren't up to snuff (I screwed up the JM215A mod twice and don't plan to try again.)

Is there anyone on the list who can mod three JM215As for a small me?

Sorry, silly typo in the last sentence. I meant to write, "Is there anyone on the list who can mod three JM215As for a small fee?"

Great, thanks Jack. I'm in the U.S.

Ted, I'll get in touch off list.

RE: Re: [emax] Re: Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

2013-12-01 by kcnvc@...

1. I got SCSI retrofit (from Ted) for mu EMAX I rack installed and upgraded OS to Emax Plus rev1.0 SE

2. I got PCD 50b (form Mech) and PCMCIA-SD card adapter.

now,

1. My Emax reads and writes an old scsi HD (=> retrofit works).

2. My Roland S760 sampler reads and writes SD cards in 50b (=> 50b works).

3. Connected 50b to Emax, terminated and set scsi ID=0

4. My Emax can not format SD cards in 50b (HD Format error)

Why ?

I am tired of searching old posts.
I will appreciate any wise suggestion.

Re: [emax] Re: Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

2013-12-01 by Ted Summers

Assuming you are using an PCMCIA card adapter- it is possible Emax may not be compatible with the adapter.
Also, assuming you disconnected the internal hard drive, correct? as otherwise you would have two scsi device at ID 0.

Termination- do you have an ACTIVE terminator? I would not recommend when using it as external drive to use the onboard PASSIVE termination circuit.
If you have it in a case, verify the external terminator clearly says ACTIVE.
This provides better termination- often they have a light on them to indicate they are working properly.

Bad to worse Emax/PCD 50B Installat

2013-12-02 by Windrumscoggin

I disconnected to HD and FDD to install the PCD 50b and when removing to 50 pin from the main board in order to to put in a longer SCSI cable I bent a pin in the Mainboard connector on the end.
I straightened it out ok with needle nose and put in the longer SCSI cable.
When turning on turning the EMax I know get 'emu diagnostics' on the LED and it just sits there in that mode and never changes I Also's had no power/light up to the PCD
I then disconnected the the PCD and reconnected the internal HD and FDD and now when it boots it must says 'loading software' but never fully boots.
Man I got a way of making things worse than they were to start.

/PCD 50B Installation Problems

2013-12-02 by Windrumscoggin

Ok put the FDD back I and SCSI drive and it won't load off SCSI drive like it used to
Only tries to load off FDD
And when it sees a non formatted disk it won't automatically revert to trying to load off the HDD
I must have jacked something up when I bent the pin on the Main board
Oh well...
Another eMax bites the dust?
I feel like a complete idiot

Fr bad to worse /PCD 50B Installation Problems

2013-12-02 by Windrumscoggin

Yeah don't know where I went wrong being the pin on the main board straightened out ok and red stripe on SCSI cable matches up to #1 pin
On main board..us nothing broken on board...
EMax just won't boot from internal HD anymore
Weird
Drive whirs up and makes its noises too
Don't know what I messed up but looks like my internal HD May be a goner maybe bumped it who knows..or I messed up something
Else but time to try and boot from the PCD and see if that works using one of teds software CF images
Wish me luck or I'm screwed...I can even find a formatted floppy around here..bought his unit as a project and it's been fine up til now

RE: Re: [emax] Re: Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

2013-12-02 by kcnvc@...

The 50b was the only drive (and floppy of course).

I connected it both externally and directly to the flat cable,

no luck. The termination was passive.

I am using Dazzle 5in1 . Has anyone had +/- experience with it or with any other SD card adapter ?

Assuming you are using an PCMCIA card adapter- it is possible Emax may not be compatible with the adapter.
Also, assuming you disconnected the internal hard drive, correct? as otherwise you would have two scsi device at ID 0.

Termination- do you have an ACTIVE terminator? I would not recommend when using it as external drive to use the onboard PASSIVE termination circuit.
If you have it in a case, verify the external terminator clearly says ACTIVE.
This provides better termination- often they have a light on them to indicate they are working properly.

I used one and it was fine, but have heard of other person having a problem with it.
It is possible that the adapter itself can have issue. (be bad or intermittent).

This provides better termination- often they have a light on them to indicate they are working properly.

now,

Brandt and Ted,

Thank you both for the will to help.

I am going to try as much SD cards(<=2Gb) as I can find around with Dazzle and pcd 50b.

Still wondering if I can make a use of PCMCIA to CF adapter that came along with 50b from Mech.
Has anyone used that, and what CF media cards did he use in that combination ?

cf32mb they more reliable than the sd cards as theres a double conversion going on with the sd

as it has to be converted to the pcmcia format first

where as cf is a pcmcia format card and ata device

no problems at all with any 32mb cf card i have done over 1000 32mb cards for different people

Do you have the 50B as the only item in the SCSI chain and and the terminator on the J3 jumper set across the two top pins?
Ie for the 50B to be set to SCSI ID zero and terminated the J3 will look like this
J3 * *-white jumper connected across here

Also, ensure your PCMCIA adapter card hasn't wigged out on you and that when the EmaX attempts to access the SCSI device you can see the green light going on the PCB

Re: Re: [emax] Re: Emax/PCD 50B Installation Problems

Found the way out. This may be usefull for someone, someday.

The problem was Emax didnt talk to 50b. Either emax scsi retro and 50b with PCMCIA to SD card adapter were tested and worked fine but not together. Reason:

1. SD card media was incompatible. You may have to try a number of different brands. It must be <2Gb
2. Termination of the scsi chain is important. If you install 50b internally, and set terminator on 50b (jumper 3) its likely you wont have an issue with termination.
But if you set 50b external, 50b J3 is not good enough. Have either active treminator on 50b side, or have 50b in the middle of the chain with emax on one end and another sampler (or any other hardware with scsi terminator) at the other end.

This chain works

Roland s760
50b
SCSI CD ROM
EMAX
Roland s760 (another one)

#1- This is known fact that you cannot use 2GB or larger. This is a drive firmware limitation (not specifically an Emax limitation), and is noted in the PCD-50b documentation available on the web.
As Emax 1 doesn't use larger than 32MB- getting larger media doesn't make any sense.
In addition any media detailed as "high-speed" is also not a good idea.

#2 As you have detailed, SCSI chain must be properly terminated, and using some "internal" scsi jumper / termination on a drive that is on an External chain is never a good idea. I would always recommend active termination in an external cabling setup.

Ted

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
