The old display contrast used -5V to 0V. The new ones needs 0V to +5v. You need to cut one of the legs from the pot Patrice mentions and connect to +5V Send me

The selector pad is only 16 switches. To check, if the SDS7 is working right, take a wire and connect (in the socket of SDS7) pin 4 with 7 for PRG 1, 2 and 6
