Good Kickdrum

Good Kickdrum

2002-11-06 by redflux7

Hello,
I just got my XL-7 last week and have been up late every night with
it makin some really awesome tracks, i LOVE this thing.

However, I can't seem to find any really PHAT kickdrums, nor can
have i been able to manipulate any of the presets to sound the way
i'd like. Have any of you guys found any good settings that will
put out some sick kicks? I'm looking for something phat in the
style of Infected Mushroom kicks, any suggestions would be really
appreciated. I'm still a newb, so i don't really know which
properties to manipulate to get the phat sound, really full, and
maybe even a dive in frequency after the initial hit.

By the way, this yahoo group is frickin awesome, what a great
resource and community.

Try layering multiple kicks and/or other waveforms using the four layers you
have per preset. Even if you are using a drumkit multisample (instrument in
Emu-speak) you can place the extra waveforms so they overlay only the one
key where you want the kick to live (layer key-range setting). Or simplify
your task and make a dedicated kick preset and give it it's own track in the
sequencer.

Don't also forget the Z-Plane filters. Those are definitely not just for
classic filtering uses. There are some pretty scary boosting filters in the
selection that mighty be just the think.

Remember that you have a huge bunch of samples to create your own
kickdrums from.

What is an synthesized kickdrum?

Take a sinewave, play it at a constant pitch. Not a kickdrum.

Now assign the AUX envelope to the pitch of the sinewave by using
patchchords. "Amount" should be a negative value. The aux envelope
should have a fast attack, and maximum sustain.

The AMP envelope should have the fastest attack possible, zero
sustain, and a fast decay (and release).

Sounds like an electronic bassdrum? If not, transpose the sinewave
until it does.

Now you're supposed to have a simple electronic bassdrum. Here comes
the fun part.

Try the triangle wave, or square wave for some very different
bassdrums... Doesn't it sound nice? No? Try all waveforms inside the
machine.

Have to clear one thing up. Fast attack (AUX envelope) means
something between 0 and 1 second.

Best bet for those type of sounds is to layer, layer, layer! You've got
128 voice polyphony, so don't be afraid to use 2 or 3 kicks if needed. I
do that for all my drums!

BTW, Sound On Sound magazine has a great ongoing series of articles called
"Synth Secrets" that goes into lots of detail about how to create your own
synthesized drums (and much more!). Definitely one of my favorite
magazine reads, and the older issues are online for free:

where do you access the basic sinewaves, etc. for creating basic sounds to

it´s in preset edit, there you give layers different instruments, that´s
where you programm the
soundmodulations....

See my email from a couple of weeks ago about scrolling through waveforms.
 Summary:

In Preset Edit, hit the track 1 mute button twice, then you can cursor
over and scroll through the waveforms.

Remember that any sample can turn into a bassdrum, if you use a AUX
envelope to controll it's pitch. So try them all and you will have
hundreds of new bassdrums =) Some waveforms makes great result...
