Anyone using a midi guitar with the XL-7?

Anyone using a midi guitar with the XL-7?

2004-01-18 by mikeextremesims

I really getting into the XL-7, spending more time with it and
realizing its powerfully deep synthesizer.

I'm a guitar player and I like synths and midi, but I'm not much of a
keyboard player. I just recently learned about Brian Moore guitars
and their 13-pin midi output (to connect to Roland/Yamaha pitch-to-
midi converters). I'm interested in getting one of these guitars (or
maybe a MidiAxe with the standard 5-pin out and pitch converter built
right in) and using it with a Yamaha G50 or Roland GI-20 converter
along with the XL-7.

Does anybody use a midi-equipped guitar with one of these Proteus
synths?

I use a Godin Multiac and a Roland Gi10 midi converter with my XL-7.
Works well, especially with some World expedition patches. I also
use a Ztar MiniZ midi controller from Starr Labs. This amazing piece
of equipment is a nice keyboard replacement for a guitarist. It
allows me to create keyboard tracks in the XL-7 using "two-hands
tapping" technique. You should check it at
http://www.starrlabs.com/. Totally different from usual pitch to
midi conversion.

We did that at the first XX-7 meet, it was loads of fun. Not sure what
convertor it was though...

To be honest, I gave up on the MIDI guitar thing after
being a user for the last 10 years. (my last use was
with a yamaha G50 and the roland converter on a
Steinberger) Yeah, it tracked OK, but let me tell
you, your synth will come alive when you play it with
an actual good (not cheezy oxygen8s or similar
keyboards) MIDI keyboard controller. I invested in
the Novation Remote25 and a month after I realized I
had not used the MIDI converter in all that time and
I'd actually become fairly good at the keyboard.
Pitch to MIDI has come a long way... but it still
doesn't cut the mustard IMO. When you play a Sitar
patch with aftertouch set to detune on a good MIDI
controller, you'll know exactly what I'm talking
about.

just my 3 cents.

Funny, but 2 days ago I was going through my old mags to possibly
offer here for anyone who wanted to pay for shipping (mostly Keyboard
and Electronic Musician).

I have one Guitar Player because it has a special report on Guitar
Synths & Midi including an "as told to" piece by FZ on the Synclavier
with some comments about guitar synths/controllers as well. {Sorry,
I am NOT parting with this issue!]

FZ said, he tried a bunch and they may work for others, but he never
found one that worked with his style.

"I recently tried out the Modulus Graphite controller . . . ." [p.
126]

June 1986, pp. 124, 126-27, 155.

John McLaughlim and Al DiMeola also much shorter "as told to" blurbs
on the Synclavier, plus there is a longer one by Dan Mockensturm Al
DiMeola's Syncalvier programmer.

Nothing spectacular; just a footnote to the conversation.
