Custom drum kits

2004-01-30 by Fab Claxton

Hey gang,
I was just reading the FAQs, and I read something about the drum kits
that worries me, but I'm not sure if I understood it correctly. Can
you create your own custom drum kits on the Command Stations? On the
MC-505, if I like the kick drum from one drum kit, and the snare from
another, I can put them together in a custom kit, and save them to a
user kit location. Is this possible with these units? It's really not
a big deal if it isn't, if the drum sounds are as good as everyone
says they are. I find that a bit of a strange limitation, though.

Unlike most competitor's gear, E-mu has no distinction between regular
presets and drum presets. No, you can't make drum keymaps, but you can
choose 12 preset layers to make of any sound you want, complete with
key windows. Short answer? Yes, you can pick a kick from one preset
and a snare from another and make your own preset. No, however, you
can't create a whole monsterous multisample keyboard layout with 30
drums each from different presets.

Addendum (one method doing the above):

(1) See the example of layering posted as part of BTS definition (2)
(2) Zone/layer/map 4 kit, prc, sfx, etc. ROM Instruments (one per
layer)in 3 different presets.
(3) Link the presets.

NOTE: Various parameters can also be used to make simulated drum
maps, such as layer transpose. (Thanks to rEalm for this and other
related tips!!)

TIP: Layers may be (1) switched or (2) cross-faded across the
keyboard map, across the velocity map, and across real-time
controller maps.

INTERMEDIATE TECHNIQUES:
(1) Use layer filters
(2) Use layer level patch cords for groovy simulated multi-
dimensional maps.
---> eg: Velocity, Pressure, AuxEnv, DC, etc. --> Pitch
---> For simulated humanize effects, try KeyRnd2 --> 'SStart [small
amount]

Not specific keys, but zones. I think this is what Aaron meant by
key windows.

For each layer in each preset you have a low point, a high point, a
low fade range, and a high fade range.

If the fade range is 000, the layer you are editing will sound within
the lo to high range. Hence, it is a switch rather than a cross fade.

You can do this with key (note number), velocity, and real-time
controllers.

RELATED EXCERPT FROM SIMLUATED DRUM MAPS POST:

Layers may be (1) switched or (2) cross-faded across the keyboard
map, across the velocity map, and across real-time controller maps.

RELATED EXCERPT FROM BTS [BEATS] DISCUSSION:

L1 may be a SFX (Special Effects) ROM Instrument assigned to the
keyboard range C-2 through A#0, L2 may be a KIT (drum kit)ROM
Instrument assigned to the keyboard range B0 through B3, L3 may be a
BAS (Bass) ROM Instrument assigned to the keyboard range C4 through
B5, and L4 may be a STR (string) ROM Instrument assigned to the
keyboard range C6 through G8.
