floppy drive?

floppy drive?

2006-01-25 by Andy

I know i may be cryin down a well here, but my floppy drive appears to
be on its last legs, i have an emax HD (with a later OS plus upgrade)
and an external zip drive (hardset to ID 5 or 6 only) that gets past
diagnostics then chokes on the disks, what do i do??? is there a way to
get the emax to boot without being forced to buy a new disk drive which
is only useful for booting?

[emax] Emax II not powering on

2006-01-25 by s*

Hi I have an Emax II. When I went to power it on last, it just makes a
clicking noise and all of the lights flash on and of repeatedly with the
clicks. Any ideas? I sincerely hope my power supply is not dead.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Sounds like either a capacitor has blown (easy to get and replace),
or a cold solder on the bottom of the board is arcing....

remove the power supply. You may see the top of one of the
"cylinders" with the metal tops bulging upward or just plain blown.
That would be a capacitor. A cold solder would be a break in the
contact on the bottom of the board- this could be less obvious to the
layman w/ minimal electronics experience....

Just my opinion though....

Re: [emax] Emax II not powering on

2006-01-25 by s*

Thanks Ted. Fortunately I used to work at one of the main music stores here
in Toronto and I know a bunch of repair guys. The downside is, very few
people know how to fix EMU gear in this city but, if it is that easy of a
fix, I'll see if they can take care of it for me (as my electronic
soldiering skills are still somewhat novice.)

Thanks again,

Re: floppy drive?

2006-01-25 by Andy

hey, sorry... k generally it used to give me the standard "disk error"
msg and would take many tries to get going, but now it gives me a "bad
timeout" error, which sounds much worse... when it was doingthe disk
error msg, i found it wasn't reading the disk until the drive made
a "swish" noise, which seemed to indicate it was finally reading the
drive but now the "bad timeout" seems to be far worse... any help at
all would be most appreciated

You better hope its the power supply thats the easiest thing to
check and fix....if its on the board is what you better hope its
not....you should be able to get the spec for the trans and check
the output of the power supply....and see what its doing.

for that matter, does anyone know what floppy drive models are useable
as replacements for the emax? is the route66 drive the only one that
will work or are there alternative (i have heard that mac classic
drives, as well as a certain sony model will work as well as the TEAC
but am not really sure) any info would be great, thanks very much

Re: [emax] Emax II not powering on

Might you know where I can get these specs? I know that my friend had a
really hard time finding any specs for his Emulator III. I have found
someone who is willing to take a look at it but, he can give no guarantee
that he can fix the problem so, the more info I can give him, the better.
It's also my controller keyboard so, if it's dead, I'm kinda screwed until I
find a replacement and I am kinda partial to the Emax's key action.

thanks a lot,
