EMXP Test

2006-01-05 by l2web_net

Hi,

I just tried out the new version of EMXP. Seem to be getting the same results.

Writing a bank works fine.

Writing the OS works fine.

Formatting produces an usuable disk. Emax will say "Bad Bank on Disk" if I attempt to access
the bank (which I guess would be blank after format). If I try to boot from the disk or use an
OS function I get the crash, scrambled freak-out screen and weird noises.

Hope this confirmation helps with the debug.

Cheers!
C.

Hi I2web_net
I'm having exactly the same problems.
Although, we have to thank esynthesist for taking the action and producing an effective working program to send our files to Emax disks. It had been many years since I last used a new bank on my Emax.
I'm sure he'll come up with a new version with all goodies we are looking for.
Thanks anyway

Marcelo

Re: EMXP Test

Craig, Marcello,

Can you give more details, I'm not sure I understand the problem.
Is the following true:
- disks formatted on EMAX:
   * banks written to this disk with EMXP
--> disk can be read by EMAX, everything works fine
   * banks written to this disk with EMAX and then read to PC with
EMXP
--> disk can be read by EMXP, everything works fine
- disks formatted with EMXP:
   * banks written to this disk with EMXP
--> disk not usable on EMAX
   * OS written to this disk with EMXP
--> disk not usabel on EMAX
   * banks written to this disk with EMAX
     --> not possible
Am I correct ?
So basically the format function of EMXP does not work for EMAX SE
machines ?
Is there a difference depending on the OS version you're using on the
EMAX ?

Have you tried the same thing with the original EMX program (on a DOS
booted PC) ? Do you have the same problem ? That's important for me
in order to be able to debug the software. If EMX works and EMXP
doesn't, I can compare the code and perhaps make some changes to both
EMXP and the Emax Floppy Driver.

No need to tell you that everything works fine on my EMAX II
machines :-). I don't have an EMAX-I machine though so I can't test
my software on that type of machine. I want one but they're hard to
find or too expensive here in Belgium...

Regards

Re: [emax] Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-06 by Marcelo Simoni - Condor Aircraft Aero Agrícola

Dear E-Synthesist

My EMX never worked anyway, because I never used a non XP PC.
Although the EMXP worked fine on creating sound disks t omy Emax.
Whenever I tried to format an OS disk, it shows strange caracters and Bad Disk message.

Thanks once more

Marcelo

Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-06 by esynthesist

It really would help a lot if you try EMX for DOS and let me know the
results.
You can do this by making an MSDOS startup disk (see BOOT***.EXE in
the files section - or anywhere on the internet), putting the floppy
in your PC, then reboot and run EMX from MSDOS.
Some useful information can also be gathered by running the
EMXPINFO.EXE program (in XP). You can find this small program in the
files section: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/emax/files/EMXP/
Can you run this program
(a) once for a disk formatted by EMXP.
(b) once for a disk formatted by your EMAX.
and e-mail the two EMXPINFO.TXT output files to me ?
(esynthesist@...).

Check your email addresses also, because I don't think it's necessary
to send all messages related to EMXP support into the public message
board (although this is OK to me).

Craig or maybe someone else can also try to compare the results of
EMX and EMXP ?

Thanks

Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-10 by tyrantraiden

I have successfully formatted a DS\DD disk and transfered the OS to it.
No problems at all. The Emax II is humming away.

Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-10 by esynthesist

Olé :-)

So I guess EMXP is fully compatible with EMAX-II.
It seems that problems reported so far only occurred with EMAX-SE
machines and are limited to the "format" functionality (disks formatted
by EMXP can not be read/written by EMAX-SE).

Feedback/test results still welcome !

PS: I'm working on an EMXP-extension which allows to read/write banks
directly on ZIP100 disks. Could be useful for EMAX-SCSI users having
ZIP-drives attached to the EMAX and to the PC...

I will welcome writing and reading to ZIP100 with open arms.

Hello (olé!),

Would it be possible to have a zip 100 version for Mac?
Zip 100 was inclued to the first generations of G4, and now easy to
find with Usb port...would be great!
Thanks

Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-11 by Phil

Hi,
many thanks for all your work E-synthesist!

zip100 compatibility would be a great thing - i eagerly await :)

My Emax-ii is running SE and I've had no problem reading & writing
banks with EMXP so far - only the formatting problem,
which for me is hardly a problem as my emax floppy formats faster
than my pc drive anyway!

thanks again!
phil

Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-11 by esynthesist

Mmm, so the formatting problem also occurs with some EMAX-II machines.
I don't know if this can be fixed. There's an "alternative" driver in
the files section (testdriver), but the major difference between this
one and the one in the EMXP package only affects floppy drives
capable of 2.88 floppies.

Anyway, the format problem will not be an issue for the ZIP disks, as
there will only be read/write support for ZIP disks :-)

I will restrict the ZIP100 features in EMXP to EMAX-II samplers OS v
2.14, because the EMAX-I ZIP layout could be different and I don't
want anyone to destroy the EMAX banks on their ZIP disks...

Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-11 by esynthesist

Hi, at the moment EMXP contains some Microsoft library calls. Maybe I
can replace that with more standard stuff, I'll look into that.

But I certainly can make a seperate version containing only the
ZIP100 functionality that can be compiled for Mac.
I'll try to release a Mac version and an XP version.

But I still have some work to do :-)
And I have to do some tests on USB drives because so far I'm only
using an old parallel port zipdrive...

Re: [emax] Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-30 by elmacaco

Hey man,

sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I tested the format function onemxp and I get the same results I'd been getting with emx, it won;t boot from the disk, it will start loading then give three floppy clicks then stop loading, on a normal floppy boot the clicking continues.

I was able to load a bank but it was one that was emailed to me and parts of it ended up corrupt. I'll have to test it with regular EMX and test a known working bank with EMXP.

FUrther tests to follow.

Re: EMXP Test

2006-01-30 by esynthesist

Thanks for helping. I did some tests myself on an EMAX-SE, see
message 2982.
I managed to boot it from an EMXP formatted disk a few times, but
most of the time it failed, exactly the same way as you described (3
clicks and then finished). I restarted the EMAX-SE about ten times
(power off/power on). The boot was successful 4 times, it failed the
other 6 times.

I did some other research since then, and my conclusion is that I
can't change the software. So I gave up... :-).

Damn, sorry about that, I meant to email you privately, it was too late ;)

Like I said, regular EMX has the same issue for me as far as the booting is concerned, so I don;t think it is your doing.

Thanks for everything you've done thus far e-synthesist!! you've made more happen than anyone could expect.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
