Where's Rex?

Where's Rex?

2003-11-19 by Carbon111

Hi Folks,
Anybody talk to Rex for a few days? I've been trying the STS number for two
weeks now and get the "memory is full" message. So I finally tried his home
phone - the number has been disconnected. I was told by Rex to expect a panel to
be delivered via Fedex the first part of last week but no show yet...and its
impossible to contact Rex. I'm considering a telegram. :(
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Best Regards, James

Don't we have a posting along these lines every couple of months?

Re: Where's Rex?

2003-11-19 by Michael A. Firman

Hi,

Through the grapevine (I recently talked with a friend and neighbor of
Rex's), I know that Rex is in the process of moving (still within Milwaukee),
so I suspect that his life is in a bit of turmoil. This is no excuse for "disappearing"
but it probably explains why you haven't been able to get in touch with him.
Rex is a very trustworthy fellow, and I know he really trys to get panels out the
door as fast as is possible (with the highest quality workmanship possible).
Sometimes, in the independent manufacturing business (and the big manufacturing
business also) there are unforseen problems in getting ones product out the door.
Recently, I know from other synth manufacturers that I am friendly with, parts
have been getting more difficult to obtain (particularly in relatively small
quantities). For example, I know that the knobs that STS uses have been
getting harder to get. All of this, plus Rex's physical move, has no doubt
fed the delays you are experiencing. All I can say is be patient, Rex will come
through.

I heard that he's already moved, a while ago, and now lives a block or so
from Grant. But regardless if he has or not, this doesn't justify not
calling paid customers back in my book.

But that's me...

Thanks all,
Rex called me today. He's up to his ears in it. Things *are* moving
along though...I feel better now.

John -

Just curious to find out why you'd be referring to the "main assembler" as a flake?

Since you've made the comment, I'd really like to know what makes you think that this is the case.

Re: Where's Rex?

I agree with John. If you read the forums of other modular synth
companies, one of the most common complaints is failure to meet a
promised turn-around deadline. Extremely frustrating, indeed.
This has been a common flaw of Paul Schreiber (Synthtech), which has
made him lose customers. One of the main reasons I've stuck with
Serge (besides it being a wonderful instrument, of course!) is how
good Rex was at meeting his promised deadlines (with millimetric
precision!). This time he just tells me in a flustered tone of
voice: "I don't know. I need to talk to *blank* and ask him what's
the deal is. Please be patient." This is for 2 panels I ordered in
the Springtime.
So all we ask for is a realistic anticipated delivery time even
before we order. If it's gonna be so long, then it'll be up to us to
proceed with the order, as long as we have realistic expectations.
To be honest, had I known it would have been this long, I would have
bought me another Cwejman, instead.
An opinion from a valid customer (I've purchased 5 panels already,
plus the two currently on order).

Re: Where's Rex?

2003-11-20 by John P

I don't know any details, but one of the builders had to deal with a
major family illness or similar situation.

I remember my first order in 1997 - I was to get together & play in a
group on a Saturday. I received it the day before (Friday) and on the
Fedex slip I noticed Rex had bumped the priority at no cost to me, and
he never mentioned it. It was delivered with a TKB screw loose (from
vibrations during shipping), Rex sent me a little kit with some extra
washers & screws, again NC. And he put Roxanne on the phone so I could
say hi & tell her what a terrific job she did.

Sigh.

Re: Where's Rex?

2003-11-20 by john duval

--- We can work this thread to death but in closing
i'll just say that i don't mind waiting a long time
for a panel, but this pushes my patience just
alittle...this is the longest it's ever been, and Rex
and i have discussed it many times. Seems the main
problem is that at presant there is only one main
assembler and after all we are all human and things
come up...to this end he has found two other people he
is in the process of training and believe me it is a
slow process. The hardest part for me is having that
much cash (the 50%) hanging out there for so long and
Rex knows that it is a problem for me and probably a
good number of other people. He is just as frustrated
as we are. I just say .... vent a little steam when ya
have to...(like me).. but rest assured, Rex is an
honorable person and a good personal friend to boot.
I'll get the panel and so will we all. We're just
going to have to wait longer than what we have
experienced in the past. Gone are the days when
Roxanne could crank out three or more a month. And
yes... i've put my money where my belief is... I
ordered another panel just a couple weeks ago.
Kind regards
John Duval

unspecified length of time....bummer :( i just love

Moving things along.
Not being specific about STS but I do think this kind of thing is becoming a
huge issue. I also agree that it's neither professional or businesslike.
I have rejected buying into some modular systems because I know the delivery
times are never adhered too and end up being extremely lengthy.
I recently waited nearly 9 months for a couple of modules, which was
unforeseen when I ordered them.
At this point I have to say congratulations to Bruce Duncan who has always
delivered Modcan modules within a reasonable time frame. I recently enquired
about some new modules and he replied his workload was very heavy and he was
endeavouring to hire more staff and move to a bigger facility.
Communication is key. I think the modular manufacturers should be honest
about delivery times and keep their customers well informed about delays as
they crop up. I get the impression with some of them that if you don't make
a big noise and become a nuisance your order is likely to slip backwards and
be replaced by the orders of customers who are being obnoxious.
This is a sorry state of affairs.
Another example I want to highlight is Analogue Systems. Bob Williams has
sold a huge amount of modules in the last 5 years and I've never heard of
any complaints about delivery times.

john blacet's been great so far, as far as delivery is concerned, and

Re: Where's Rex?

Just spoke to Rex. Called up his shop, and there he was! Building
PS's. Tells me one of my panels is approaching finalized status
(yay!), and again apologizes for the delay. Great guy.
The bottom line is we like the product enough to stay faithful of
it, and what really helps is knowing that Rex has always been a
straight shooter. As long as he continues to be involved with STS, I
will continue to give them business. If he hands it over to someone
else, then I'll take my money elsewhere....

I think I see what you mean here, but surely this is being a little too
cynical. Have faith in others! The Serge system is not a main frame -
they're fairly easy to assemble. Keep in mind, the basic engineering premis
behind their development and design was geared for kit building.

me on the CD i sent him...... ya don't have to worry
about him handing it over to someone else... that will
never happen.... something may happen, but not that.
As far as these things being easy to build... i just
don't know what to say about that..... hahaha. If it
was that easy i'd do it myself. even with a handful of
speed everyday Roxanne was lucky to punch one out in a
week and a half....but i'm sure we could get circular
with this one.
