What are people going to do? Nikon no longer lists the LS-5000 on their product line and there's nothing close cost & quality wise. What plans are we making?

Depends on how much scanning you are doing, you could always have a service scan for you. If you want to scan them yourself, you have two choices. Buy a used LS-5000 on EBay or camera scan them with a slide duplicator. I do both. The LS-5000 gives best results. Camera scanning is quick and easy. Tina On Thu, Aug 26, 2010 at 11:11 AM, Lew <lew1716@...> wrote: > > > What are people going to do? Lew , It's more about what plans are you making, right?.. The 5000 has been a discontinued item for a while. I understand the 9000 will be discontinued also. While I'm not a fan of them many are.. So if you have a need you may want to deal with it. Either purchase a scanner or figure on using a service company to do your scans. jimbo

Although I have scanned most of my 35mm slides I have two Polaroid CS4000 film scanners carefully packed away. Just in case...

I bought a new Minolta Dimage Scan 5400 (first version) back in 2004, because (1) I was convinced I wouldn't find anything that good in terms or price-performance again, and (2) that the market for these things was either at or approaching its zenith; digital photography was getting too much traction for things not to change. (For the record, I still shoot film for about 75-80% of my work, so a solid film scanner was and still is necessary.) I believe new Nikon 5000s are still available in some places. If you want a new one, the time to buy is NOW. If you don't need a brand- spanking-new version, go for a used one, but you might want to do it soon: I'm rather amazed at the prices people are getting for used examples of my Minolta scanner on a certain auction site, though I suppose I shouldn't be... - Barrett

If you are considering a Nikon, we will be selling a Nikon 9000 with glass carrier, multiple holders, and the Aztek wet carrier with fluid. We have the original packaging, manuals, etc Regards, Eric Luden Digital Silver Imaging

Is the Minolta scanner still being made? I don't see it at B&H or Adorama. I have a Minolta Dimage film scanner I will sell. It will scan film from 8mm through 6x9. I used it lightly for two years, before I got my Polaroid 4x5. Contact me off list. Ben benjschneider2@...

No Minolta camera either :-) The 5400 was the best model of the Minolta range. Optional Scanhancer added to reduce grain aliasing. The Nikon 35mm models came second. The Canon 35mm models had a lower resolution and so did the Polaroid ones. In MF sizes the Nikon 9000 is still made but depending on market demand so availability varies. The Hasselblad/Imacon models are still available but for that price you can do better qualitywise with a secondhand drum scanner that has been overhauled. I'm using a Nikon 8000, Epson V700, Umax Mirage II. All with fluid mounting if required. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Ernst Try: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Wide_Inkjet_Printers/ | Dinkla Grafische Techniek | | www.pigment-print.com | | ( unvollendet ) |

The 5400 at the time it was introduced was a good move... Nikon's scanners at that time fell a bit short.. This prompted Nikon to redo it's scanners and they raised the bar considerably.. So constructively if one chooses to go after a film scanner of this type the LS5000 would be the better of the two choices. jimbo

Hopefully I do this right.. Ok the LS 5000 is the latest version of the scanner ..the previous version which looked pretty much the same was called the LS-50 ED.. It was a 14 bit scanner not 16 bit like the LS version.. I actually had the previous version long ago but can't remember that much about it.. it's been too long.. It was notably slower I remember that.. Oh with the LS using supplied software you can scan to raw which you can't do as I recall with the previous version. I will say that while I'm not a fan of either for serious scanning the LS version is probably the best of that type technology going. jimbo

I don't think Jimbo is quite right, although I'm by no means an expert. I believe that the LS-50 was a cut down version (as in it wouldn't work with some of the accessories) of the LS-5000. The predecessor to the LS-5000 was the LS-4000. One of the main accessories that won't work with the LS-50 is the bulk slide feeder, otherwise I think they are pretty much the same. I have an LS-5000 which I use for bulk slide scanning - the feeder takes 50 mounted slides at a time and just gets on with scanning them. Its quick and dirty but clearly doesn't compare with a drum. Now I am getting confused. The scanner I have is the Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED. It is a 16 bit scanner. What I was wondering is how the 5000 ED compares with the LS-5000. I'm not sure which scanner is the latest or what the differences are. Nikon gives the specs for the 5000 ED on their web site but I am unable to find out anything about the LS-5000, which is why I was asking here. The LS-5000 seems to garner higher prices on ebay, but I'm not sure that that is a consistent pattern. Anyway, the discussion led me to question whether there was room to improve on the scanner I currently have. Thanks for any information anyone has on this question. Mark

Hi David, Well your right that the LS-50 is a toned down version of the LS 5000 ..I had the LS 4000 ..that's where I jumped in.. It was referred to as coolscan 4.. When the LS-50 came out it was referred to as the Coolscan V ..it had it's own bulk film system.. the IA-20 adapter ..It used cartridges .. worked with both the LS-50 and the LS-5000 and you could do up to 40 slides with it.. But yup, the SF-210 which is the big bucks unit only works with the LS-5000. The actual scanners are not the same inside.. The LS-5000 is a good 50% gain faster then the LS-50 and the LS5000 is 16 bit where the LS-50 is 14 bit.. I got my LS-50 before I got the LS-5000.. as you couldn't get the 5000 anywhere in a USA model.. Oh and the name Coolscan seemed to go away with the LS-5000.. jimbo

I notice that Microtek has reopened their North American Sales operation for selected models, but it appears that there are no dedicated films scanners in the line-up. Check at: http://www.microtekusa.com/.

Look at the back of your scanner.. Sounds like you have the LS version These do say supercoolscan on the front of them.. Folks including Nikon stopped referrring to them as "Coolscans" with this model.. and started calling them LS5000 or LS9000.. The actual model will be written on the back..If it says LS-50 then it's a 14 bit scanner. Visually the two scanners look alike as I recall. jimbo

Now I am getting confused. The scanner I have is the Nikon Super Coolscan
5000 ED. It is a 16 bit scanner. What I was wondering is how the 5000 ED
compares with the LS-5000. I'm not sure which scanner is the latest or
what the differences are. Nikon gives the specs for the 5000 ED on their
web site but I am unable to find out anything about the LS-5000, which is
why I was asking here. The LS-5000 seems to garner higher prices on ebay,
but I'm not sure that that is a consistent pattern. Anyway, the
discussion led me to question whether there was room to improve on the
scanner I currently have.
Thanks for any information anyone has on this question.

As I recall, the 5400 was only for 35mm film. The Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro is the scanner that works from 8 or 16 mm to 6X9. I still have mine, hardly used, complete with Scanhancer additions which indeed works to decrease grain and artifacts considerably. I'm considering selling it because I no longer have the time to scan film myself. For whatever it's worth, I'd rented a Nikon 9000 scanner to make comparisons, and found the Minolta scans more to my liking. For 35mm, the optical resolution is 4800 ppi (without upsizing). My understanding is that parts are still available - in particular - bulbs, although the last I read, they come from Australia. The Scanhancer site is run by Eric, and he is very knowledgable about Multi Pro details. (www.scanhancer.com). If anyone is interested in purchasing my Multi Pro, kindly contact me off line. I'm located in NYC - if you're near by, you could come and try it out. Otherwise, it will go on eBay in the next few weeks. Regards, Clayton Price clay@... Just be aware that Nikon is not providing operating system support. I could not get my LS-5000 to work in Vista and went back to XP on my lap top when I bought I new desktop, since I now use the scanner infrequently. You might check before you buy to determine if they are supporting Windows 7. I don't know about Mac operating systems. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Barrett Benton <bwbenton@...> wrote:

I just looked on ebay and you still can buy new Nikon Coolscan 9000, so I guess if you want or need one, you can still buy one. I've been using a Coolscan 9000 and have been very pleased with the results. David -- David Aschkenas 915 N. I happened buy a Minolta Dimage Dual IV just before Minolta discontinued them. When I bought my netbook with Windows 7, I found and upgraded the driver so it still works. keithz --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Lew" <lew1716@...> wrote:

Keith, Where did you find the driver. I have the same scanner and just upgraded to Windows 7 64bit. I did not find a driver and was about to purchase ViewScan. Any help would be appreciated. Paul _____
