AN200 PROGRAMING QUESTION

AN200 PROGRAMING QUESTION

2004-11-10 by digitaldisko

When I go to the preset 238 (the string sound) and I turn it to just
OSC 1, turn sync off, and listen to the sound I hear beating or some
kind of LFO. So I go to the LFO settings and turn everything to 0.
Still there! Does anyone known what is going on? I read in the
manual, which isn't very helpful with the things I need to know, and
it said something about osc 1 having two oscillators..what's that
about?

-Also, are the two visible oscillators on the board naturally
programed to be an octave apart? Because when I have sync turned
off and freqs at 0 and the two waveforms set to the same one, like
saw, they seem to be an octave apart. How do I get them to be at
the same octave?

Thanks

Difficult to tell from your desrciption. Suggest you try the following:

Hvae you reduced the settings for Pitch Depth and FM Depth to '0' under SYNC/FM?

What about the settings for PWM Depth under VO1 and VCO2 and AMOD Depth and FMOD
Detph under VCA and VCF/Mix, respectively?

When you turn the LFO to value to '0' you are not disabling of the LFO, you are reducing
the frequency at which the LFO modulates the destination parameter(s). Reduce the Depth
settings to elimiate the modulation.

I don't know if 'preset 238' is availabe in our Files section or not - would you happen to
have the name for this Voice so it might be cross referenced by AN1x or PLG users too?

Correct. Setting the Alogrithm to Sync+FMbth, Sync+FMmst or Sync+FMslv determine how
the two VCO1 oscillators (master and slave) are connected in relation to the FM signal. Use
the FM Depth, FM Source1 and FM Source2 parameters. Example:

Set Algo = SyncFMbth, FM Depth = +12, FM Source1 = LFO1. Adjust the LFO1 speed. Now
set Algo to each of the other two options and repeat the test. Hear the difference?

Now try setting the LFO1 Wave =s/h, reduce the LFO1 speed and increase FM Depth =
+32. How's that for sample and hold?!?! Make sense now?

Are you using AN1xEdit or AN Expert Editor? If not, you should be. If I recall correctly, my
friend complained the Pitch paremeters for VCO1 & 2 could NOT be set from the front
panel controls of his AN200. IMO, it sounds as though your describing the same limiation.
You'll need to use one of the editor/librarians to gain access to the Pitch value :-/

Thanks Jon that was a BIG help!

I have always felt there was things that were happening in the
presets of my synth that I didn't have control over. Then I looked
in the manual at the AN200 editor section and saw all the things I
was looking for: VCO1/2 pitch and fine tune, PWM controls, key
tracking, etc. But unfortunately the reason I never opened up this
program on my computer is because I get an error each time I try to
open it. On the disk I received when I bought my AN200, I open up
the XGworks folder and install the program. Then I restart my
computer and install the AN200 editor program/plugin. But when I go
to start the program I get a "Error: XGworks.exe - Entry Point not
found (the procedure entry point FT_Exit4 could not be located in
the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll) My operating system is
Windows XP home edition. Is there an update or any advice people
could give me in order to run this program on my computer? Also,
what does PEG, FEG, AMOD, and FMOD stand for?

There is a patch available from Yamaha to correct the error you
describe. Go to XG Factory at

http://www.xgfactory.com/

then navigate to the Downloads page, and then to the Yamaha link.
Chose the update approprate to your system. I don't run XGWorks, but
if you have difficuties with the patch post back to this list or try
the DX200 list also here at Yahoo! Groups as they have much
experience with this patch.

 Also,

I assume you've read Jimmy's reply by now. I would suggest you check
out the Links section as there are links to many synth programming
tutorials including some specific to the AN200:

I downloaded the update for 3.0 but the update said I didn't have
the versions required for the update (versions 3.02-3.05) and
therefore coudn't find my software. I have version 3.0. Is there
another program I can use to open the AN200 editor? Is there anyway
someone can email a different version of the software so I can
finally access the editor to obtain all of the hidden features?
Someone please help me!

Thanks.

You should read this:

Try the stand alone editor:

http://www.yamahasynth.com/down/plg150/s_utils.htm

 Is there anyway
> someone can email a different version of the software so I can

You need to have purchased and registered XGWorks 3.0:

http://www.zzounds.com/item--YAMXGWORKS3

if you're already running a registered copy, then you need to address the issue to Yamaha
Customer Assistance. If you've previously run XGWorks 2, I believe you need to uninstall
before installing 3.0

> Someone please help me!

Or, as previously mentioned, you can try the freeware AN1xEdit:

*Didn't connect either. I went to the site and looked under the
downloads for the AN 200 and it was only an update for the AN 200
editor for a Mac OS operating system. I have Win XP.

*Wait, I'm really confused. I got the XGWorks on my disk I got for
my AN 200 synth. I can't run it so I therefore can't register it.
Did I have to purchase something else?

*Is there anyway else for me to get the stand alone AN 200 editor?
Could anybody send me that?

Looks like XGFactory is in need of an update -the old links no longer work. Try this link
instead for the stand alone editors:

http://www.yamahasynth.com/download/plg_series.html

Okay, here's how it works: the version of XGWorks bundled with the AN200 is actually
XGWorks Lite, not the full XGWorks v3.0. You need to download the updater for XGWorks
Lite, not the full v3.0:

http://www.yamaha.co.uk/xg/html/midplug/m_mid10.htm

Scroll 3/4 of the way down the page and you'll find it under the section header 'Updaters'.

Yes, AN1xEdit will work with the AN1x, PLG150-AN and AN200.

Re: AN200 PROGRAMING QUESTION

Is there a way to listen to my patches as I'm making them in the AN
Editor? It says I shouldn't touch my synth while I'm doing it, but
how do I listen to the sound changes? Do I have to update it each
time I change one knob?

Thanks.

Please. Disregard that last message. I figured that part out. But

computer and the device. What should I do?

This question is impossible to answer without more detail. What exactly are you tring to
do, what step's are you taking, and what are the results?

And have you ready the manual yet?

Re: AN200 PROGRAMING QUESTION

2004-11-15 by digitaldisko

Yes, I've read through the manual and spent hours trying to figure
this out. So first, I went to the Midi Setup box and made sure the
Midi In/Thru/Out were all connected to my external midi device.
Then under the AN Expert Editor setup I made sure that under the
midi folder both ports were turned on and all of the rest of the
boxes (Midi chanel, part no., device no., board no.) I left at 1.
Under insert and transmit, I have it clicked on user presets 1-128,
bulk dump interval at 600msec. Then I go to recieve AN1x bulk dump
(so all of my patterns can come up on the program and nothing
happens. How long is it suppost to take. I usually wait 10 min and
see no progress. I have both Midi In's and out's cords going into
the system. When I call up a pattern in the AN Editor, it does work
with my synth and I hear the changes made. I just need help doing
the bulk dumps. Thanks.

You are (fortunately) mistaken, good sir.
AN1x Edit changes the synth when you make changes in the program. So you would
say that it's a real-time update. You will be able to hear the changes as you
move knobs, sliders or whatever in the software just as if you did it on the
synth itself.
I believe what the instructions are saying is that you should not be editing
patches on the synth while using the program. You can certainly play the
keyboard while AN1x is running.

Under System Setup, yes - that shoud be right.

600mesec is too fast for Bulk dump interval. Try it set for 1.0sec or greater. The SysEx file
size of AN series bulk dumps are considerably larger than most.

You don't mention what type of MIDI Interface you are using, but be advised cheap sound
cards with MIDI I/O are indadequate - get a real, multi-port MIDI Interface if you haven't
already.

A single voice should only take a few seconds, a full bulk dump will take a couple of
minutes. SInce you're able to affect changes from AN Expert Editor to the AN200 it sounds
as though the cable connections are correct. Have you successfully performed a bulk
transmission, either a single voice or many, to the AN200?

Re: AN200 PROGRAMING QUESTION

I still have not sucessfully performed a bulk dump and I changed the
settings to 1 sec. I have a Tascam US-122 midi/sound card device.
Also, another weird thing that is happening is that when I use the
AN1x Editor and call up a persons patch list, I click on a patch and
nothing happens (My AN 200 will just think or be frozen) but then
the patch worked when I closed the program! So I opened up the
program and turned it off hundreds of times last night just to check
out peoples patches!! Has anyone ever heard of my problem?

Thanks

Transmission buffer size- 4096. Transmission Interval- 2000ms.
Click on "transmit AN bulk dump" icon, and it transmits whole bank
without a problem. On my other synths connected via midi, I use a usb
midisport 2x2.

If I were you, I would take this to the Tascam Forums and post
inquiring on issues performing SysEx dumps with the US-122.

http://www.tascamforums.com/

also, make certain to check out

http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html

to see that you have the most current drivers. There was a post on
the US-122 regarding XP SP2 which advised a clean install of the
Tascam driver following the install of SP2. Uncertain whether this
applicable to your situation. Also, you might check out the DX200
list here at Yahoo! Groups where there are a handful of AN200 users
too - perhaps somebody there has a US-122.

Are you using AN1xEdit in PLG mode? Don't recall which menu option
this is under off the top of my head, but I suggest you make certain
you are running AN1xEdit in PLG mode. The problem you describe is
unusual and I've not heard it desribed before on the list. Do you
have a similar issue with AN Expert Editor or just the bulk dump
issue as described in your previous email. Have you tried the editor
plug-in with XGWorks Lite as uralmoto suggests in his response? Do
you experience any of these problems using XGWorks Lite?

Re: AN200 PROGRAMING QUESTION

You were right Jon about putting it in PLG mode in the AN1xEdit
program. Now it works fine. Which is a very good sign. I followed
your advice and also downloaded the latest driver for my US 122.
But I am still having trouble doing a bulk dump in the AN Expert
Editor. I go to setup -> Recieve AN1x Bulk Dump. Is this the right
operation since I have a AN 200? There are two other options that
are not in bold which are: Insert AN Bulk Dump Data.. and Extract
Bulk Dump Data.. . Is that what I want or should I follow up on my
problem with the "recieve AN1x bulk dump". It's really frustrating
me because I can make new patches and store them on my AN 200 but I
can't upload my old patches to adjust them! I wish this synth would
have just put the last options found in this program in the synth.
There are plently of buttons that don't have two purposes. Oh well,
I guess I get what I pay for. I shouldn't complain about a synth
that is $200. : )

It should be, yes. Unless there is some funky SysEx header I'm not aware of that
differentiates an AN200 from a PLG150-AN

I do not know what the Insert and Extract Bulk dump Data commands are - they do not
appear in the Mac version of AN Expert Editor (at least not that I see.)

Tell me - have you been able to initiate a bulk from AN1xEdit? If you haven't, then I would
advise you try and upload a single Voice from your AN200 to AN1xEdit. Since you are able
to successfully transmit from AN1xEdit to your AN200 then the reverse should hold true.

Please double check the MIDI Ch and Device No settings on your AN200 match those used
to in both AN1xEdit and AN Expert Editor. I'm fairly certain the PART No. and Board default
values of '1' are okay, but please double check the doc from your AN200 and verify the
settings on your hardware match those in your software, Probably a good idea to have the
PART No. and MIDI CH set the same, but again - I'm uncertain how the AN200 handles the
Board value.

If it works successfully with AN1xEdit then we know it is not a connectivity issue with the
US-122, but rather a configuration issue with AN Expert Editor.

How do I recieve a bulk dump in the AN1xEdit program? What folder is
it under and what command is it called, because I don't see it.

Thanks.

Okay - no offense, but there is online help in AN1xEdit. You need to try and help yourself
a little more. I'm happy to help, but I don't have the time or inclination to repeat what's in
the manual.

On the menu bar, go to Help -> AN1xEdit Help: Select Libary Module then Bulk Operation
- read up on the Send and Request commands. It's as simple as selecting a Voice, then
click on the Request button.

I strongly suggest you read the chapters: Program Setup and AN1x/PLG150AN Overview
and Using the PLG150AN under Getting Started. Furthermore, there are links to AN200
specific tutorials and Reference Manuals here:
