Hello! New an1x owner aboard!

2006-08-22 by kalin_progg

sorry for big delay! i promissed to write right after i get the an1x
and thanks to Jon, Jeff and Sergiy (thanks again for the piece of
advice) now i have second hand an1x with all the factory settings
restored. well, considering the price i paid (300$) maybe it's not a
wonder, that this board has some problems but i'm in Korea now and
it's not so easy to get understood even at the biggest musical store
in Seoul. So i decided the proper maintaince to be done when i come
back in my country- Bulgaria. About the problems - they are three:
- DC jack sometimes just switches the power off- it could be
expected since this is obvously an old and not very gently used
board (it even has a crack on the rear panel) so it needs a change;
- volume knob causes scratches sometimes, maybe just needs to be
cleaned;
- ribbon controller sometimes behaves kind of strange- sometimes it
changes the sound without touching. after ignoring it in the system
settings menu i don't experience such a problem anymore, but losing
this so expressive controller is not a good idea. maybe again some
dust or something...yeah you may say didn't you notice all these
things when you were taking the board..obviosly i didn't..i was busy
to enjoy the beautiful yamaha sounds. but i hope it all can be fixed.
one more thing: sometimes when i tweak the knobs changing some of
the patches "edit" appears on the screan, but sometimes it doesn't.
could you explain me why? many thanks again!

On some patches the knobs are assigned as controllers (like the ribbon, mod wheel ect) in the assign mode so they just act as a control rather than a proper sound parameter edit (like VCF cutoff, ASDR ect).

Use the mod matrix to have more than one parameter assigned to one or more knobs at different rates. This is where the untapped power of the AN1X lies. ;-)

This would make me nervous. It's been sometime since I've opened up my AN1x, but I
would think perhaps the DC connector is affixed to the main board and had perhaps been
jarred loose - I had this happen to an inexpensive Compaq laptop.

Probably.

There have been similar reports to AN1x-list regarding this type of behavior with the
Ribbon Controller. In most cases the connection of the ribbon connector to the main board
from the Ribbon Controller is nightly tightly fastened.

There are eight buttons in the Knob Parameter Group which are used to select which group
of related parameters will be edited from the Assign Knobs, i.e. VCA, VCF, etc. When set to
Assign, the Assign Knobs use the settings programmed into the Ctrl Matrix for that
specific Voice to affect temporary changes to the Voice. If you were to hit Save, your
changes would not be stored. Consider this a 'performance mode' if you will.

When you select one of the remaining seven Parameter Groups, the Knobs are in 'edit'
mode and if you were to hit Save the currently edited Voice your changes would be stored.
Make sense?

Jon,

Huh? (heh heh)

Anyway --kalin

I think Jon's right. (It's been a while since I opened my unit up as well.) The jack is soldered to a board (maybe a sub unit, not the main board) with some other jacks, if I remember right. You probably have a broken solder joint which shouldn't take a technician much effort to correct.

So, study Jon's answer carefully. He's the list moderator and has given
you good info. Learn how to program all of those knobs, the ribbon
controller, aftertouch, the wheels and when you are able to get an FC-7
or two, the pedals. I love all of the possibilities that the AN1x gives
as a live controller.

Hello Bulgarian friend !

I think that the jack socket in the AN1X has a loose solder, because of
the crack on the rear panel .Or maybe the socket itself is broken, but
less probably . Get a soldering iron and fix it . Another possible cause
is on the supply jack side because of the bend on the cable . Cut out ~
10cm of wire and fit a new male jack (the stock one is molded around the
wire and not re-usable) , the "+" pole is on the center pin of the jack
.Nothing too bad !

In fact it is the same problem : with the volume pot it is audible
(scratches and plops) , with the other pots the bad contact on the
cursor causes the parameter value changes to be ignored by the \ufffdP . No
change = no display !
Clean them all with any proper electronic cleaner , have (again) a look
at all the solder joints of the pots....
If you open your synth, have a look at all the ribbon cables, connectors
.... most of the troubles are related to these things with digital
electronics (because the AN1X is mostly digital, despite its name !)

Jeff, John, Rob and Ed, many thanks again for detailed explainations!!!
I will use your guiding lines when i go back in Bulgaria when i can
easely find a proper technician. Until then- best wishes to all of you!
And cheers (of course)...BTW what do you think about Ozric Tentacles-
do they use AN1x...especially the sequences..
greetings!

As for Ozric Tentacles ..

Well I do enjoy them from time to time, and have even made the effort to see
them live, but, at the end of the day, I can't help but feel that they are
one interpretation of what Gong might have become if you had stripped away
Gong's sense of humour and taken them on a slightly different path than the
one adopted by Pierre Moerlen (sadly now deceased). But we can't blame
Pierre for that. Having such an instantly recognisable guitarist as Allan
Holdsworth in those days kind of ensured that they would follow that
particular path.

The aspect of Ozric Tentacles that I do enjoy, when in the mood, is that
they keep a track going for a lot longer than Gong did. Gong, on their
'real' albums (before Daevid Allen left the first time), always seemed to
just get into a groove and then felt they had to break off to say/do
something humourous, whereas Ozric Tentacles, having established a groove,
milk it for every last drop. Gong live, of course, often let rip on a song
for much longer than on the album versions.

Also Gong, in their moments of instrumental genius on album, show, IMHO, a
better vision, structure and sense of control of direction than the
Tentacles do.

Couldn't resist that coment!

Anyways, long live my PLG150-AN!

Cheers,

NovemberPapa
