Let's have some opinions!

Let's have some opinions!

2002-07-19 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

I have made a graph and filled in some numbers where I can based on my
opinions of boxes. Feel free to amend my numbers and say why. I have some
notes below.

box sequencing live sampling synth effects
sounds
MPC60 10 4 7 1 na
na
MPC2000 7 6 7 4 ??
na
MPC3000 10 5 7 3 1
na
MPC4000 8 5 9 ?? ??
na
MC303 4 7 na 5
3 5
MC505 8 9 na 8
6 7
ASR-X w/rom 4 5 8 7 8
8
RM1X ?? 8 na ??
?? ??
SU700 ?? ?? ?? ??
?? ??
SP808 ?? ?? ?? ??
?? na
MP-7/XL-1 7 8 na 9
5 9
Proteus 2500 7 7 na 9
5 9

- For pure sequencing I gave the MPC 60/3000 the star and the only 10s on
the list
- For Live work then MC505 I believe is still king but still not a ten.
- For pure Sampling, I assume the MPC4000 is the best, and I know the ASR-X
rocks as well
- for synth functions, I think the E-mus are the strongest with the MC505 in
second and the ASR-x in third (this might be different if I knew more about
the yamaha stuff and the sp808)
- for effects, first place is the ASR-X with its 24bit DP-4 innards, witht
the 505 in a close second, it has three simultaneous effects which is pretty
great. The E-mus, well, two is not much and they are okay but not stellar as
far as I can tell.
- for built in sounds, first place goes to E-mu for sure, the ASR-X Urban
Dance ROM is great as well (E-mu now technically too!) with the 505 in third
based on an aging JV soundset.

WoW! Thank u so much for your generous reply! I'm looking for
basically working you know in my basement making my beats nothing
live.. so I just started looking at teh MPC3000 as you suggested.
Thank you! I'm still deciding tho.

is it just me or is the mpc3000 a bit too pricey? I suppose 24bit 96k is cool. But 4500$ cool? Now i'm back to wanting the Hartmann Neuron!!!

my 2 cents...
i'm currently using a very maxed out mp-7 connected to a yamaha a-4000....
yamaha doesn't ever get much street cred with its gear, but the a series
samplers (3000,4000,5000) has a lot going for it. i have been using my
a-4000 for over a year now, and am just starting to discover the potential.
these samplers can do loads of stuff.... up to 10 outs with an add-on, lotsa
fx, filters, loop resampling, loop divides...etc... all for under $1000 bux.
i paid 800 for the sampler ... 20 bucks for a 4 gig hard drive (internal)
and another 200 bux for some additional ram.,, compare that to the a-kai
MPC.... yeah...everybody sweats them, but ppl sweat lexus' when a honda will
get the job done (and a lot cheaper too....)...

It doesn't seem (correct me if I'm wrong) that many people have
arrived here as synthesists. My experience with E-mu gear includes
total disinterest in the original Proteus units, regardless of the
sound ROM's, because the ability to create new sounds was always
pretty limited.

The first E-mu unit I bought was the UltraProteus, and that was
because it's a Morpheus synth with additional filter cubes; the ROM
sample set didn't matter so much as the modulation
architecture. (Until then I'd been doing most of my work on a couple
of Korg Wavestation racks, and doing a lot of modulation programming -
if you're interested, the CD tracks at http://www.mp3.com/cassiel/ are
mostly combinations of Wavestation and UltraPro.)

I bought an Audity 2000 shortly after reviewing one for Recording
magazine - I was really impressed by the clock-based modulation
architecture and arpeggiator integration, and the fact that the
filters had more bite and presence compared to the Morpheus/UltraPro
generation; but I detested the user interface, and didn't have the
time to knock up an editor/librarian for it.

I came at the XL-7 as an Audity 2000 with an accessible, fast access
interface to the synthesis architecture. The onboard sequencer was, to
some extent, a bonus, and I might even have gone for the unit without
that. The sequencer's useful for working out ideas in a hurry, and I'm
really glad to have it, but it's underpowered for real, heavy-duty
interactive live sequencing. (For my last gig I had some stuff running
out of the XL-7 as backing, but most of the sequencing was
software-based algorithmic stuff.)

What I'm basically saying is: if you're going to judge the XL-7/MP-7
against other beat-boxes, keep in mind that you're getting a
tremendously powerful (and high-polyphony) synthesis architecture in
the box; don't just judge the ROM sets, the factory presets, the (lack
of) sampling, or the sequencer features.

It's the MPC4000 actually, and they're going for closer to $3000 (or was
it $3200?) in the stores. I think it's a very cool box, but just too
expensive in light of todays software sequencing environment. For that
much money you could get a bad ass PC (or laptop) with an RME card, and
Cubase SX, and probably still have cash left over. For those people who
don't want to go the PC route, it doesn't really offer more than say
MPC2000XL combined with a good sound module or external sampler. Just my
$.02

You know,
I can only assume you have a computer- I hope it's at least 800 MHz PC or Mac.
With that computer you have-
1. A sequencer
2. A sampler
3. Lots of instruments
4. The means to produce your own tracks
Yes, software is expensive but for the same amount as buying a Korg Triton, you could have a nice software sequencer with effects plugins, virtual instruments, and virtual samplers.
A keyboard is nice, yes...But knowing what I know now, it's only a tool to have. Maybe it's just me but if I was to start off wanting to make music but I only had a computer, I would start it all with a nice sound card and software.
Then move on to a MIDI keyboard.

...but you might well face a battle getting it working properly,
you'll have latency issues, it doesn't (IMHO anyway) sound as nice as
dedicated hardware (yet, anyway) and you don't have a physical front
panel with knobs and sliders.

I haven't had many problems with mine other than the learning curve which is the same as any instrument I've bought.
As far as sound, even sounds from my instruments have needed to be enhanced with my software programs to make them sound better.

In fact the MPC4000 doesn't offer any built in sounds really, it does however come with a 20/40 gig harddrive packed with samples to start you off.

its a personal subjective decision, computer vs. hardware. IMO at this time there is not enought to make one shine so much over the other in particular aspects to be able to predict or tell someone what is better in that regard. I have both, but if pushed to choose, would ditch the computer. But if forced to keep only a computer, would do fine . . . .

I haven't had many problems with mine other than the learning curve which is the same as any instrument I've bought.
As far as sound, even sounds from my instruments have needed to be enhanced with my software programs to make them sound better.

...but you might well face a battle getting it working properly,
you'll have latency issues, it doesn't (IMHO anyway) sound as nice as
dedicated hardware (yet, anyway) and you don't have a physical front
panel with knobs and sliders.
