Let's have some opinions!

2002-07-19 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

I have made a graph and filled in some numbers where I can based on my
opinions of boxes. Feel free to amend my numbers and say why. I have some
notes below.

box sequencing live sampling synth effects
sounds
MPC60 10 4 7 1 na
na
MPC2000 7 6 7 4 ??
na
MPC3000 10 5 7 3 1

MPC4000 8 5 9 ?? ??
na
MC303 4 7 na 5
3 5
MC505 8 9 na 8
6 7
ASR-X w/rom 4 5 8 7 8

RM1X ?? 8 na ??
?? ??
SU700 ?? ?? ?? ??
?? ??
SP808 ?? ?? ?? ??
?? na
MP-7/XL-1 7 8 na 9
5 9
Proteus 2500 7 7 na 9
5 9

- For pure sequencing I gave the MPC 60/3000 the star and the only 10s on
the list
- For Live work then MC505 I believe is still king but still not a ten.
- For pure Sampling, I assume the MPC4000 is the best, and I know the ASR-X
rocks as well
- for synth functions, I think the E-mus are the strongest with the MC505 in
second and the ASR-x in third (this might be different if I knew more about
the yamaha stuff and the sp808)
- for effects, first place is the ASR-X with its 24bit DP-4 innards, witht
the 505 in a close second, it has three simultaneous effects which is pretty
great. The E-mus, well, two is not much and they are okay but not stellar as
far as I can tell.
- for built in sounds, first place goes to E-mu for sure, the ASR-X Urban
Dance ROM is great as well (E-mu now technically too!) with the 505 in third
based on an aging JV soundset.

Subject: [xl7] This might be a dumb Q...
