heard today a great effect in a roland groovebox mc-505 called "LoFi".... soundz a little bit like a bitcrusher, but cooler....
hey man... why does the emu does not have such efx? maybe they will install some new with d next os... wouldn´t be a problem or? think the chips are fast enough....

Yeah lo fi is cool, I wish we had a Slicer function too, awesome way to chop up pads.... Same with Step flanger.

You could probably set up an lfo to work as a controllable slicer fx....as I have stated earlier, I havent dug into the XL7's patch editing too much yet (been WAY to busy), but from what I have seen in it, I'm sure it could be done!

If it was just simple 1/16th note on and off's, then yes. The slicer
effect has a tone of ramping slices and other features that would be
pretty hard to emulate with LFO's, or tempo locked envelopes (I've tried).

Mmmm, understood, I guess I was assuming that a 'slicer' effect was more of
a modulable gater or stutter effect....it could still be fun to do something
like this useing different randomized lfo shapes on separate layers though,
could be like a continuous morphing machine or something. I may have to try
that...mmmm

It is like a gated effect, but you can use different patterns and have the
velocites ramp up and down in note intervals too. I suppose you could get
close to the same thing LFO's, but it would take ages longer to program
compared to just adding an effect :)

A good method for creating this effect is; create a layer with your
desired pad sound, copy that layer to a second. Tweak layer two so that
LFO 2 is modulating AMP using one of the square or pulse wavefroms and
is tempo locked (1/8. 1/16 etc.). Now, with cord N (knob 14) have that
crossfade between the two layers. Save the preset with the pad played as
normal and then crossfade when you wanted the gated effect. Add extra
release on layer two to give a bit of a delay feel. Also, you can fatten
your preset by using all four layers (1 and 2 normal, 3 and 4 gated). To
set the crossfade you'll need set the initial amp of layer 2 to -96db
and have cord N work in a positive path and layer 1 have cord N work in
a negative path.

Thanks Sean...I am sure that will start many people on their programming
path.

Other things to consider are the use of multiple summed LFOs to achieve
complex rhythmic gating effects. Also, the use of patch links will enable
you to set up a trio of patches so you can have your basic sound plus
multiple different slicer effects.

Of course, you could also modulate LFO depth in those summed LFO patches for
real-time shifting between different slicer sounds.

Lots of synths can route LFO to AMP, but the fact that E-mu offers so many
LFO shapes, tempo sync, multiple LFOs across layers across linked patches
and a mod matrix to not only make it possible, but fully-controllable in
real-time perhaps makes the XL-7 the king slicer-dicer.

I just upgraded from an XL-1 to XL-7...got my new baby last night! :)

cheers,
aeon
