editing drum kits

2005-08-09 by eriksatie01

hi to everyone in the list, I'm a new user of an xl-7. I own it since
one month and I'm very happy with it.

some beginner questions:
1. is there a way to edit drum kits? I want to be able to change the
volums of kick, the snare, etc... but I cannot find a separate volume
for each instrument in the kit
2. are the instruments included in the drum kits also present as "stand
alone" instruments? how can I know the name of an istrument contained
in a kit?

thanks

I'm looking to the drum maps of the roms I own (xl-7, rob papen techno
yard, and ZR), I've found them on the emu site, and I need some more
explanations about sound browsing.

I see that each instruments it is build up by one or more samples.
instruments have their name and number, and so have samples. some
samples are present in more than an instruments, for example it is
present in a kit and in an instrument on its own. but not all the
samples have their own instrument (that is needed in order to have full
controll on it, I guess), many exists only in kit with other

when you create a new preset, or edit an existing preset, you usually
browse and use instruments, now my question is: is there a way to
select and use raw samples instead of instruments? and, if the answer
is no, how can I edit sounds that exists only in kits?

thx

only if the sample exists separately as a rom instrument

What kind of "editing" do you want to do? You can set up a layer to
isolate a single sample [or set of samples already adjacent to each
other], place it on the keyboard where you want, tune it, apply
patchcords to it, etc.

Other than that, you do not have the ability to edit or create your
drum maps on P2k based synths.

Hope this helps.

PS: I am not sure if the kit/multisamples are simply collections of
pointers to individual samples [available as rom instruments] that
CAN be accessed or if they really contain samples that cannot be
accessed as rom instruments. Can anyone clarify this? Thanks.

I've realized that I can simply use one sound for each
midi track instead of playing several sound in the same kit in one
midi track. In the second way, if I edit it then I will affect each
sound present in the kit , in the first way I don't mind about
affecting other instruments because I use only one of them.

Thx for this information, I was curious about other P2k sound modules

looking at drum maps from emu site, I've found that not all the raw
samples are available as 1-sample instruments. This could be a
"problem" when you are looking for a sound browsing throught
instruments. just scrolling throught them is not enough, you have to
manually try each pad of each kit, or check the drum maps.

thx for the help
