Help creating drum kits on the PX7

Help creating drum kits on the PX7

2005-07-22 by bezowinz

Some backround on how I set up my kits:
I need each drum instrument to be routed to its own output. So use a
layer for each drum instrument. Kick-layer 1, snare=layer 2, ect. I
then assign each layer to its own out by using either output 1, 2 or
3, and panning each layer hard right or left. Once I add both links
to a preset, I'm able to send 6 sounds to 6 outputs separately. This
limits what I can do to each drum sound, but I have to set it up this
way for mixing purposes. Any way...

I am looking for some ideas for drum sounds. I could use some
suggestions on filters, LFOs, auxes and anything else that effects
the sounds. I could also use some suggestions on routing patchords.
I use maybe 2 or 3 patches per layer. The stock presets use all 24
per layer. At the same time, the stock kits sound thicker and fuller
than mine.

I would simply tweak the stock presets, but they're set up to send
the entire kit to 1 stereo output.

I'm looking for realistic, but aggresive sounding drums. Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for writing up your method of isolating and routing 6 drum
instruments to 6 separate audio outs. I have not been doing much
music lately and don't really have specifics to recommend regarding
patchcords and drum sounds.

I have experimented a little with patchcord-based effects and have
written up some things pertaining to non-drum sounds. I assume you
can do similar things with drums. I will try to search the archives
and will post links if I think they apply to your needs.

In the meantime, I hope others have more direct experience with drum
instruments they can share.

It took a while to figure it out. But it seems the other features of
the machine don't lend themselves to this setup.

I'm getting better at patchord routing, but what would really help is
adding some effects. Specifically, distortion, chorus, or flange to my
snares. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to route effects to
specific layers, and have the the effect routed to the same output as
the layer. Seems that effects are always on Sub 1 & 2, which is not
where I need them.

If anyone can offer some advice on how to assign effects to specific
layers and outputs, I'd appreciate it.

Hi,

As my english is very poor, i'll tend to explain how to do that as clear as possible.

First of all, select one of your own preset and go to the preset edit menu to configure where are send the Fx in each layer ( mute button 10 ). For example config layer 1 ( the kick ) to send 2 layer 2 ( the snare ) to send 3...etc.
Save your preset and go to the global menu.

Choose the channel where is you're selected preset ( C1A for example ) instead of master fx and config this channel ( also in the global edit menu ) to user.
When you will play back you rythm sequence ( in this example ) each layer will be send to the selected bus in the preset ( sub 1 for layer 1 sub 2 for layer 2 ) . So you can isolate different instruments. But the fact that the fx engine return the dry signal on the master only don't allow you to send fx on the sub output.

In this case if the master fader ( on your mixer ) is diseable, you will not ear the fx but only the wet signal of your sound.

After you can return in the preset edit menu to control the amount of the fx ( in the preset patchchord ) ex: Midi K>FXA1>+25 Midi L>FXB3>+ 52

Hope that you will anderstand me and that help you to config the fx engine.

A+
