Jungle (Amens)

Jungle (Amens)

2005-02-07 by Daim

Does anyone know how to make jungle like amens?
If you don't know what I am talking about .
I hope some remebers the way jungle techno sounded in the mid 90's
sounds of ganja crew, krome & time , the old Prodigy sounds.
Ya know that old U.K. shite'

The closest I've come is using the composer' acoustic drums /w a 16th step
REC and a tempo of about 131 .

It 's kinda close but it doesn't have that sharp crunchy crash cymb.
The kicks and snares are close but......

Does anyone know what f%$#@ I am talking about.

Drop it on me! It got me make really bad electro clash!!

help.....!

>Does anyone know how to make jungle like amens?

Sampled breaks and sounds, a lot lifted from Vinyl..... Probably 12bit
samplers in some cases (esp the earlier stuff). If your going for the
muffled approach ;)
and add some time stretching using an old algorythm.

You can sequence beats, but the very nature of early jungle is quite
often the cut up brake beats. A lot of things where done much simpler due
to the limitations of the hardware at the time, that made this 'sound'
dooable in the first place.

The very fact that these recordings are Vinyl, means that they have
quite heavy compression.

   Cheers,
         Mark

not really sure i understand ur question.
do you want to make amens with you command station?
you want to find loops or something?

Yes--
I want to make these crunchy breakz with my command station
any thoughts?

Re: Jungle (Amens)

2005-02-07 by Daim

Ok let me better explain what I am asking .
Is there a way to use any of the onboard drumz , let's say make a
(arp loop), then construct a /patch cord filter setup w/ effects,
that sound close to 90's jungle.
Now I know the old method via sampler and over compressed slightly
distored drum loops.
I'm asking if anyone tryed to copy that sort of style with a command
station with any success?
And if you have; pass along some tips "G"!

Better?

well i cant say i've done that but i have redone a famous loop in drum
n bass lately tho i had lost it cause i didnt know how to save(i had
it for like 12 hours).
i just reconstructed it but without taking the time to find quality
samples and stuff like that

Try pitching the drums up (either with coarse tuning or in the
patchcords -> Pitch) and adding a distorted filter (there're tons, try
a few with different Fc & Q). On the sequencing side, try recording
the pattern at ~90 and playing it back at ~145. Use lots of ghost
notes to create that "filled in" sound. Lots of Vel -> Amp helps
there.

I'll try it . can you go into more detail with the
ghost notes.
and the use of the Vel -> Amp because all that is , is
volume .
thanks.

Re: Jungle (Amens)

I personally doubt it's possible without sampling heavily compressed
loops, but here's a couple of things to try:
- one of artefacts of heavy compression is loss of high frequencies
at the beginning of sound; set up a subtly opening filter envelope on
drums for that "squashed" effect;
- to simulate compression on longer sounds (crashes, cymbals) set up
an amp envelope that dips soon after beginning and then goes back up;
- a fun thing to do is layer a drum kit with noise oscillator. The
noise layer can be monophonic. A noise osc with gradual release can
sound somewhat like reverb tail. You can probably achieve the effect
of ghost notes by setting up an opening amp envelope (or maybe even
note-off layer). Noise with sharp attack and release can be used to
fatten and dirtify the drums. I didn't invest enough time in this
area to give you a more specific advice - just play with filter,
volume and tuning of noise for fun and profit :-)

have a nice day,
Boris.

Hello i thank you for this post; there were many months i have tried to make good breaks for jungle but without the real effect i want to have. So i will try what you tell us and probably resample the loops in an inferior bit rate.
Bye bye

Wow. I was just thinking about the same things, friend!

You are in luck! And yes, I do know what the f%$#@ you're talking about!! HA!

I've just recently downloaded some midi patterns that are some of the classic Drum n' Bass breaks INCLUDING THE AMEN.

I found it here:
http://www.simonv.com/music/tutorial/

NOW - Here's the trick. If you want to make this easier to download to the command station, it's best to separate each drum track (kick, snare, ghost snare, hihat, hi hat accent, and tamborine) into seperate channels in a program like cubase or the like and then export that as a midi file. (I did this by just making several duplicates of the midi track and then erasing away midi notes until I had individual drum tracks.) Perhaps there are different ways to approach this part that others can suggest but it worked well for me.

You can then load the .mid as a pattern into the command station using e-loader. The above midi files contain subtle variations of velocity data to make the breaks sounds pretty damn good indeed.

They may not be the classic sound of chopped up samples, but you'll never to be tied down to tempos or the kinds of snares, kicks and other percusssive elements you can substitute for the samples that **everyone else** uses.

Cheers Mate!
