Kick drum question

Kick drum question

2004-09-02 by Fab Claxton

Hey gang,
I've been using the Protean Drums ROM pretty much exclusively since I
got it, 'cause it's just so damn good! My question applies to any
ROM, though. When you guys mix songs, do you spend a lot of time
EQ'ing (or using filters to achieve the same effect) the kick drums
in your patterns, or do you just use them "as is"? I record
everything track-by-track into a Yamaha AW16G DAW, so I usually spend
a bit of time EQ'ing the kick drum. I never EVER seem to be
completely happy with the results, though. The kick is always either
too bassy, or it lacks the real "oooomph" that I want it to have. The
rest of the drums - I'm happy with. But the kick drums are a
nightmare for me. I was really just wondering if this is a common
problem for everyone, and what tips/tricks you guys use to overcome
it. Thanks!
Fab

Fab, it depends on the style of music, but I usually find compression
combined with EQ (pre and/or post compressor), particularly across a
whole sub mix of drums (kick/snr/hats) can really help the groove stick
together and sit in a mix better.

Heavy EQ and a hp/bp filter with lo cut off point can help drums thump
without too much sub weight.

Also, try combining kick and bass line through a single compressor channel!

Re: [xl7] Kick drum question

I have a pretty set methodology when it comes to programming XX-7 kick
drums. I alway use two instruments (samples) per Preset (both are from
the "All Kicks 1 or 2" instruments of the Drum ROM), one is a deeper kick
that provides the "thump", and the other is a brighter kick that provides
the clicky attack and overall sound characteristic. The deeper kick
pretty much always gets a "Megasweepz" filter type, (this really adds a
lot of low end power to the BD) and has it's AmpVol set to +1 to +3. The
second brighter kick usually doesn't get a filter at all, or if it's just
too bright, I may use a 2 pole lowpass fitler. This kick usually has it's
AmpVol set to about +8 to +10 depending on the song. Once you make the
Filter and AmpVol settings, it's easy to use the Layer Transpose settings
to scroll through the instruments to find what works best for the song.

Thanks for sharing this technique. As a non-drummer/non-drum
programmer, I can use tips like these.

i've heard they're rather dangerous - always exploding and stuff. saw
one rotating in a giant steel cage once. very scary.

maybe he's just letting us know that he's not a rather nifty MIDI
device from Oberheim...
