Kick drum question

2004-09-02 by Fab Claxton

Hey gang,
I've been using the Protean Drums ROM pretty much exclusively since I
got it, 'cause it's just so damn good! My question applies to any
ROM, though. When you guys mix songs, do you spend a lot of time
EQ'ing (or using filters to achieve the same effect) the kick drums
in your patterns, or do you just use them "as is"? I record
everything track-by-track into a Yamaha AW16G DAW, so I usually spend
a bit of time EQ'ing the kick drum. I never EVER seem to be
completely happy with the results, though. The kick is always either
too bassy, or it lacks the real "oooomph" that I want it to have. The
rest of the drums - I'm happy with. But the kick drums are a
nightmare for me. I was really just wondering if this is a common
problem for everyone, and what tips/tricks you guys use to overcome
it. Thanks!
Fab
