Fab, it depends on the style of music, but I usually find compression combined with EQ (pre and/or post compressor), particularly across a whole sub mix of drums (kick/snr/hats) can really help the groove stick together and sit in a mix better. Heavy EQ and a hp/bp filter with lo cut off point can help drums thump without too much sub weight. Also, try combining kick and bass line through a single compressor channel!
