midi setup almost works - need some ideas esp with Sonar

2003-08-20 by dwoodaman

Hi all
This is really long so if you don't have a large bit of couriosity
you might just want to bail....for the rest of you ->
I have almost gotten my setup to work like I want, which is to chain
my EA1,ER1 and DX200 off my XL7 and have the XL7 controll
everything, by which I will be able to dump SMF into the XL and play
them back live without using a computer.
Almost everything works! It all plays back fine, I can record
With Midi thru to automatic in Sonar [which is midi echo - responds
to incoming midi channel by going out the same channel], can record
if I use my master keyboard successfully with all machines on
Midisport port A
Note: all machines set on A channel in Sonar
XL 7 midi A out to EA1 IN [this just added, everything else was
unchanged from my previous setup]
EA1 - midi thru to ER1 midi in
ER1 – midi thru to DX in
DX out [set to OUT not THRU] goes to Midisport A In
Midisport A out to XL7 in
Yam on Ch 14,15,16,16 (won't use this last channel tho)
EA1 on Ch 11,12
ER1 on Ch 13
ALSO: In Midi set up on XL7 – Midi merge out ON
Midi enable channels 11-16 OFF
Channels 1-10 set for internal, 11-16 set for external (not using
multi A here for anything)
Here is the one small problem: I write patterns on the non-XL boxes
and then record them into Sonar, or at least I did before I had the
XL. Now I cant do this anymore, if I fire up a groove box and hit
record, nothing happens. If I change the DX for midi thru, all sorts
of chaos happens. Setting the midi echo to off doesn't help either.
So I could actually live with this, since I could just disconnect
the xl and record the basic patterns like I used to - but I'm greedy
and want it all! Any ideas most appreciated!

I am also trying to get everything organized and here is my idea. I
have a Motu MTP/AV and love it so much that I am about to get a
second one just to manage my beat boxes. The MTP/AV is an 8 by 16
MIDI patch bay that is very programmable. Almost any MIDI channels
from any port can be split out and routed to another port. Using this
I will make Port 1 the master in. Channels from Port 1 input will be
split out to the output of several other ports.

Port 1 Channel 1 to Port 2 Channel 1 – XL-7
Port 1 Channel 2 to Port 2 Channel 2
Port 1 Channel 3 to Port 2 Channel 3
Port 1 Channel 4 to Port 2 Channel 4
Port 1 Channel 5 to Port 3 Channel 1 – MP - 7
Port 1 Channel 6 to Port 2 Channel 2
Port 1 Channel 7 to Port 2 Channel 3
Port 1 Channel 8 to Port 2 Channel 4
Port 1 Channel 9 to Port 3 Channel 1 – P2500
Port 1 Channel 10 to Port 3 Channel 2
Port 1 Channel 11 to Port 3 Channel 3
Port 1 Channel 12 to Port 3 Channel 4
Port 1 Channel 13 to Port 4 Channel 1 – DX200
Port 1 Channel 14 to Port 5 Channel 1 – AN200
Port 1 Channel 15 to Port 6 Channel 1 – Electribe R
Port 1 Channel 16 to Port 7 Channel 1 – RM1x

This way my Command Stations are 4 part multi-tembre while other
units are single channel. Sonar only has to Port 8 Channels 1 through
16 of my primary MTP/AV to access those 7 units. If I want to dump
something into the XL-7, or maybe my RM1x I can then attach the
output of that device to Port 1. In fact, I can set up programs in
the MTP/AV so that the output of the Command Stations or the RM1x can
take turns controlling all devices. I think the MTP/AV holds 128
programs. So I can store songs in each of the devices. When it is
time for that device to be the master I can change programs on the
MTP/AV, no re-patching of MIDI cords.

In my current setup I have a very handy program in the MTP/AV where
each channel of Port 1 is redirected to a corresponding port number.
P1C2 maps to P2C1, P1C3 maps to P3C1, P1C4 maps to P4C1. With this
program I play any device in my setup on channel one with my Fantom
just by changing the Fantom's MIDI channel.

You have a XL-7, MP-7 and a P2500? Why not just load the ROMs in one box,
or do you use all those sequencer channels?

Port 1 Channel 1 to Port 2 Channel 1 ? XL-7

Port 1 Channel 5 to Port 3 Channel 1 ? MP - 7

Port 1 Channel 9 to Port 3 Channel 1 ? P2500

Thats cool in fact that sounds really great and I understand the
concept, but way too complicated for me,since I am trying to go to
totall simplicty - one midi path all the way thru, which is
important for using the XL live with no computer. Plus buying any
more gear right now is not possible...
thx for the ideas

Hi rob,

just out of interest, can you send one channel to multiple channels? i.e.
P1C1 to P2C1, P2C2, P2C3, P2C4 ... while at the same time merging data from
another port i.e P3C1 to P2C1, P3C2 to P2C2 etc ?

Regards,

Stu

I use the channels. Also, I have a few expansion ROM's split across
those devices.

P2500 with S. Orchestra and Techno
XL-7 with ZR and World
MP-7 with Beat Garden (Vintage on order)

Also, I like having a lot of patterns/parts available at once so I
don't have to change programs. The set up is designed for quick
writing and arranging of songs. I normally set up a buch of parts on
each device, then experiement until I get an arrangement I like. Then
I dump everything to Sonar II, embelish some parts, and farm some
parts out to soft synths or other hardware. It is a very easy and
quick way to work and the Emu's are a great value.

Wicked man, that's true dedication! I have one more ROM slot left in
mine, not sure what's going in there yet (though the World Exp ROM has
gotten good reviews and is the current contender). After that, I might
need another too!

You can merge any inputs to any outputs. Note plural. You can also
filter data such as aftertouch on any routing. When my first MTP/AV
died I replaced it with a Midiman 8x8. Two weeks later I took it back
because the routing was very limited. If you wanted to rout the input
of port 1 to the output of port 3, you had to do it with all 16
channels. The MTP/AV does not have this restriction. The MTP/AV will
also respond to program change, turning your keyboard into a master
controller. You can also link two units for a true 16x16 patch bay if
your operating system will handle 16 MIDI ports. The programs can be
edited by the front panel, but the included editor is much simpler.
Just drag and drop your connections on the screen and then tell it to
save to the unit.
