Maybe an adjustable quantizer module is a job for a PIC processor...?
2000-03-16 by Tkacs, Ken
BTW, another use for a quantizer is to get those "bleepy-bloopy computer" sounds, like what you get from noise into a sample & hold, but actually in tune, when you slide the quantizer in between them. (Speaking of bleepy-bloopy computer sounds, anybody got a good copy of Gil Melle's Andromeda Strain soundtrack...?)

Hi all, Just wondering if there's an analog voltage quantizer out there in MOTM format? Or something similar? I've been using a Serge quantizer but the whole banana + 1/4" jack thing gets annoying. Cheers for any help. - Jeremy

Many of us use the Wiard/Blacet Miniwave as a quantizer. It so happens I was just using it today. http://www.blacet.com/MW.html It comes with a quantizer bank in the PROM and there is another quantizer PROM available. Check the links on the page above. Larry Hendry has a Stooge panel (several different ones, actually) available in MOTM format for the Miniwave, and you can also use Front Panel Express to make a panel for it. Dave Hylander has a great expander for the Minwave that holds 10 EPROMs. http://www.hylander.com/miniwave.html http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/panel.htm -Richard Brewster Jeremy wrote:

Here's a quantizer in MOTM format. Although it has white a metalic/white panel. It's also a 1/4 inch banana combo. http://www.analogic-acs.com/quantizer.html Cheers! Tobias Enhus

When you do this, are you using the PCM sample wave playback as an audio source or as a control voltage?

For quantizing applications the wavetable output is used as a control voltage. In this mode the Miniwave is set to the 0-10V scale, which takes positive input voltages and puts out positive voltages. A quantizer PROM has a table that translates the incoming voltage to the nearest quantized value, assuming a 1V/octave control voltage. The standard Blacet PROM has 16 quantized scales, and the Quantizer PROM offers 256. http://stretta.com/~matthew/resources/waveproms/index.html (Too bad these are not currently available.) -Richard Brewster Jeff Laity wrote:

Anyone on the list have one of these and can give us impressions? I seem to remember some discussion about it a while back. -Richard Brewster Tobias Machine Head wrote:

I contacted the analogic-acs folks a few weeks ago when this popped up on AH
since there are no quantizers available in an assembled form for 1/4"
modulars at the moment (cough) - a situation that I hope will change this
year. Unfortunately, they are not able to take any orders at this time -
they said perhaps by March. Also, they were unwilling to change the banana
jacks for 1/4" jacks. There are certainly spacing issues but I couldn't get
them to provide any electrical reason.

Hi , > I contacted the analogic-acs folks a few weeks ago when this popped up > on AH since there are no quantizers available in an assembled form for > 1/4" modulars at the moment (cough) - a situation that I hope will > change this year. Yes for sure :) The new module i am designing ( final pcb prototype is under assembly ) is a CV-Quantizer/Wavetable in MOTM format... BUT unlike all other Quabtizer systems , my module , named "Quantix-8" is fitted with 64KB of SRAM intead of the eprom. A microcontroler manage the STAM for load/save operation through MIDI ... This allow a super simple and fast edition or changes on table .64KB mean 2 matrixes od 16x16 waveforms/scales in 256samples per wave... To control it you can use CV ( bank/wave select) or MIDI messages ( controler/program changes) or even logic banana inputs ( trig mode). Additionnal feature for free :the Quantix8 can work as a MIDI to CV interface ( a 8 bit thing..) This module is no more no less than an eprom emulator editable by MIDI and as this, it can be used to replace the eprom on many classic quantizers. The input of the Quantix8 is modular : so you can plug there many kind of specialised inputs pcbs ( piggy back assembly) -a fast ADC with zero detector ( for quantizer/wavetable ) -a counter/divider drive it by pulses with a hi speed VCO ( wavetable) -an classic ADC with external convert logic for CV quantize I am also designing a 16 bits version to add to the excellent ACS quantizer. It will be very cool to edit new scales/waveforms on PC and then download them to the Quantizer to try them... Panels, schems pcbs are already designed and will be released at http://m.bareille/free.fr very soon (+/-1 week ) ... More to come ... Have fun! Cheers, Marc B. Unfortunately, they are not able to take any orders

John,
That was my feeling as well but there seems to be a jack spacing issue with
the Analogics-acs quantizer that would make it mechanically difficult.
