Weight ???'s

2001-02-13 by pow333@hotmail.com

I am wondering if some of you could tell me what your systems weigh? I
am thinking the my system will proably get up to about 20 2U wide
modules. As I consider what I want to do for a case I have realized
that this is an important consideration for me. So please tell me what
your cases weigh, and if possible what they weigh loaded/unloaded.
what a pesky issue
thanks

HA HA. When I check the specs on gig gear, this is one of the first things
I look at . I must be getting old, BUT I still have a good back and plan to
keep it that way.

WIMP! I sacrificed my back to the Hammond god years ago. At one point
I was carrying a B-3, Baldwin ElectroPro 88 piano in road case, AND a
Rhodes 88.

Ever notice how us guitar players got scarce when the drummer or
keyboardist showed up? Oh yeah, and that bass player that insisted
on the Ampeg SVT with both of those huge cabinets.

Wow, thanks for the instantaneous onslaught of such pertinent
information. I did sound at an upstairs club, the tuesday band had a
B3, took four people much cursing to get it up there, the keys guy
usually bought a round after we helped get it back down.

AARRGGHHHH! I guess by your logic, a DX-7 is a "reasonably good"
clone of a MOTM system. A clone has no soul. I've tried them all and
owned a few too. Hell, a solid state Hammond has no soul. Gimme
tonewheels, baby!

Oh.

I thought he meant that he now has clones of himself to do his lifting.

I had to go back and re-read the original E-mail a little closer.

Shows where my mind is. I need clones to do my soldering.

I spent one summer touring the rockies and midwest in a rock cover band,
playing a Rhodes, B3, Clavinet and an ARP Axxe. All but the Axxe were owned
by the band, I still have the Axxe. After that tour, I swore I'd never own
a Rhodes or a Hammond. Now here I am, 20 years later, with both. And
planning to gig with them. Do we ever learn?

Do we ever learn? Nope! Anybody wanna see my gigging Hammond? It's
built like a Pontiac Fiero - aluminum subchassis that breaks down
into generator, upper manual/preamp, and lower manual pieces. All on
big 120 pin Elco connectors.

I use a smallish (12U) calzone case, capable of holding something like 10 2U
modules, which is more bulky than heavy (although I haven't weighed it
loaded). Luckily, all it has to do is sit there. If I was worried about
portibility, I'd go with a pair of the collapsable SKB cases
(http://www.synthtech.com/motm/motm_skb.jpg,
http://www.zzounds.com/love.music?p=p.DAVSKB19P12&z=984687101383), which
apparently weighs about 25lbs unloaded.

hello all,
and i can understand why no one would like to answer this - it involves
pulling modules out cherished racks, anyway, i'm prepared to offer this:

my 831 weighs 385 grams - which is 1u, so we could resonably assume a 2u
module weighs slightly less than double - say 700 grams
as for my cabinet loaded / unloaded weight - i shudder to think / would
rather not find out
if you're looking for a light case, the SKB (and there are also cheaper
copies now as well) range is supposed to be the lightest that offers
protection - there are lighter cases around made from expanded pvc board,
but they are truely shite unless you're not planning on moving the cases
around

maybe a little more information on what you're wanting to do - and more
answers will be forthcoming

was that even vaguely helpful..?
cheers

i've got a full skb and it's real easy to carry with one hand. maybe 35-40
pounds total including a bunch of patch cables. it's a *lot* lighter than
my kurzweil, but that's not saying much. :)

there are, however, two problems with using these for motm stuff:

1) for now, you have to sacrifice 3U (which is a lot) to the power supply.
2) it won't hold modules with big-assed pcb's, e.g., blacet time machine.
well, it'll hold 'em, but you have to remove them to collapse the case.
all of paul's modules fit fine, though.

bleep.
out.

RE: [motm] Weight ???'s

2001-02-13 by Tkacs, Ken

I would have answered the weight question right away, but frankly, my
growing collection of modules are lined up along one wall on the floor of my
studio awaiting a cabinet! So unless I just throw them all into a box and
heave that onto a scale, I have *no idea* what the collective weight
(especially sans the cabinet) will be.

I knew right from the beginning that I didn't want to rack mount my MOTM
modules (even though I appreciate the fact that they can be!), opting for a
cabinet solution instead. It just hasn't happened yet!

What was the status on those elusive flat rails...?

If someone wants to take accurate weigh measurements of each module (with
power harnesses) I can make a JavaScript application that will help people
calculate the combined weight of a projected system. :) Don't know if that
helps since a wooden cabinet or rack is bound to account for 75% of the
final system weight.

I'm planning a big system, so I'll just shore up the studio floor with a
vertical 2x4 and keep building!

Oh No! Not only road warrior stories about heavy gear, now you had to
go and bring multipin connectors into this.

"Back in ought one, we were wiring up this modified focusrite
console, 'stead of DL's, every channel had cinchjones in and out for
all the patchpoints. After we pinned that sucker we felt so good we
went on a club tour with telharmonium to burn off the rest off our
youthful energy. . .

All I wanted to know was if I built some racks into an old suitcase I
have if it would be too heavy and wreck the suitcase. I guess I'll just
give it a try.

It's all my handiwork, and was my previous obsession before MOTM. The
connectors are bulletproof, with gold slotted elco pins that make an
extremely good connection.

You can see the connectors here:
