patch cords and module layout

2001-02-14 by baron swodeck

I just realized that I am going to need a bunch of patch cords! Any
sugestions on brands/where to buy? Also what lengths would be the most
useful (assuming a cabinet that fits six 2U modules across)?
Any ideas on the best order to mount modules in the cabinet? I assume that
putting them in in the order you finish them is not the most usable way.
Thanks,
Barry S.

I buy my cables from John Kovac. A bit more expensive than some, but the
are very nice quality with Switchcraft plug, and shrink wrapped ends. He
will custom make any length you want, I several different cable colors and
shrink colors. I use 18" to about 5' as my cabinet is 6-2U wide by 5 rows
of modules high. Tell him you a MOTMer and he'll give you a
discount. http://www.wackykovacy.com/

Personally, I just use some short cheap Hosa cables, which are availabel
from my friendly neighborhood Guitar Center. They're about a foot long,
which is fine for my small setup. I'll need some longer ones (2') and some
shorter ones (6") before too long.

As for mounting order, well, that's entirely up to you, your application,
and how you like to this about your signal path. I tend towards
left-to-right with modifiers come up from below... although by chance that's
about the same order I've finished them in. <sheepish grin>

www.wackykovacy.com. kick-ass cables. mention MOTM and john'll give you a
good quote (he knows you'll be a multiple repeat customer:). for my
skb-sized system, i'm currently using about 35 cables. but many of those
interface to a mobius, and there are all kinds of things going in and out
of my mixer. but you'll want to do that. no really, you will. as far as
sizes go, i've found 6"ers to be quite handy, and with the size you're
talking about i'd go mainly with 3'ers. maybe a few 2'ers for variety.

well... how do you use your system? i tend to put EGs on oscs a lot, so
i've got an 800 near my osc. i've also got one near the 110 (for obvious
reasons. my two 420s often play together, so i've mounted them near one
another. the osc is usually one of the two signals going into the 120, so
those are mounted near one another... it's not too hard to move stuff
around, so experiment! that's why you've gone modular, isn't it? :)

bleep.
out.
