Using the EMAX-1 Arpeggiator to control other Synths...

2006-05-26 by peter_vh01

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out to use the arpeggiator on my Emax-1 to
control my Juno 106. Anybody know how to do this? I was just playing
with the arpeggiator today, and had it functioning wonderfully on the
Emax itself, just not sure how to control other devices with it.

Thanks!

- Peter

Sadly Emax does NOT transmit arpeggiator-data to it´s MIDI OUT.

Gah! So there is no possible way to use the Emax Arpeggiator to drive
other gear? What a shame!

Anybody know of any affordable midi modules out there that can do a
good job of this?

Hmm, just a thought, might it be possible to record an arpeggiated
sequence with the sequencer, and play that back through the midi port?

No, if doing so you´d still need to have the arpeggiator turned on and
running into the same problem, the damn arp. just doesn´t transmit
arpeggiated notes out, not even internal, whoever made that decission
@ E-mu back then.... &%$§"!.

My Yamaha AN1x has a great Arpeggiator and Pattern Seq. and transmits
over MIDI, even on an independent MIDI Channel.

err, that's odd then, becuase i'm using my emax as a master controller (via atari ST
cubase) to record arpeggiated lines to my microkorg & jx3p without any problem. Cubase
records all arpeggiated notes with no problem and plays them back. Also works if directly
connected to external synth.... It does send arpeggiator to midi out.

Cheers

Err, great find then for me and you´re right, just tried it, works on
both my Emax´ with SE and Plus Software, honestly I can´t remind
reading that this was obviously changed with these software-versions,
"shocking" news ;-), I never tried this with them until A MOMENT AGO,
just because I am sure on Emax 1 Software version 3.2 this did NOT
work, right ? If anyone can please confirm. In MASTER menu > Special >
MIDI Analyzer > MIDI Data: Out I could now see the arpeggiated notes
running, so on my old non SE- Emax in the same menu you could only see
the note transmitted you pushed if I remember correctly, but not the
arpeggiated notes (inbetween). Let me know someone with OS 3.2 if I´m
right then it´s working only on SE and Plus OS, and thx again for that
info.

OK,

So how can I find out if my EMAX has the SE revision on it? According
to what it says under Master --> Special, my HD has the version "Emax
HD Rev. 1.1" installed. Is this the SE version? According to some
websites I was looking at, it should say "Emax SE HD Rev 1.1"..perhaps
there just wasn't enough space on the display to include the SE?

Ah, no according to this site,
http://www.silveriafamily.com/emax/emax_overview.html HD 1.1 came out
before the SE.

I don't really feel like going through the effort of setting up a DOS
machine with a FAT drive to get an SE install disk. Is it truly not
possible to send arpeggiated sequences through the midi out with the
version I am running? Or perhaps it's just a setting somewhere I need
to adjust?

Re: Using the EMAX-1 Arpeggiator to control other Synths...

Actually, I decided to go ahead, and I installed DOS 6.22 onto an old
box I had kicking around.

Ran the software, created the disk, but when I run the disk I first
get the message 'BAD BANKS' and then 'WRONG SOFTWARE'. Anyone else
ever experience this? I took the SE software off of the Files section
on this group.

Re: [emax] Re: Using the EMAX-1 Arpeggiator to control other Synths...

2006-05-28 by elmacaco

I can make you an SE upgrade disk, if you like, it's $25 for the trouble.

The good news then is you can run the Plus OS and have all the Emax features.

Ah, no according to this site,
  http://www.silveriafamily.com/emax/emax_overview.html HD 1.1 came out
  before the SE.

I don't really feel like going through the effort of setting up a DOS
machine with a FAT drive to get an SE install disk. Is it truly not
possible to send arpeggiated sequences through the midi out with the
version I am running? Or perhaps it's just a setting somewhere I need
  to adjust?

also dos 6.22 is not necessary, you can use a more recent dos version as
i did, so that even fat 32 partitions can be recognised.

Re: Using the EMAX-1 Arpeggiator to control other Synths...

2006-05-28 by peter_vh01

I tried following those instructions, and I also tried the Plus OS
disk. I get the same message, first 'BAD BANK ON DISK', shortly
followed by 'WRONG SOFTWARE'.

Any other suggestions? Dos 6.22 should work just fine I assume?

Re: [emax] Re: Using the EMAX-1 Arpeggiator to control other Synths...

2006-05-28 by elmacaco

I haven't been able to write a working OS disk with EMX since I made a Plus OS once disk years ago. I can burn banks OK but all the OS's get the error you get,

Try burning the plus OS, that's the only one I could ever burn successfully.

I have a bunch of Emax disks with various OS's and that's what I use to make OS disks for others.

you could make the SE upgrade with that OS though.

2006-05-28 by pasquale.aprea@...

keep on trying, it should work. try creating many floppies. dos 6.22 surely
is ok, every dos should be ok according to my own experience.

make sure you first format those floppies on a real EMAX, no matter the os,
or else EMAXUTIL WON'T work
