HxC help offering and a SCSI question.

HxC help offering and a SCSI question.

2016-02-19 by ritcci elliott

Does anyone need specific detailed instructions to get the HxC working? I got mine today and got it functional with libraries. Im not 100% sold on the device yet because some of my library seems screwy like fluttering audio. However, my own samples created with mic input are smooth and save and can be recalled properly.
Loading banks takes 10-25 seconds. Thats a long time to wait to hear something you probably wont even use. Too bad I have a REV1 board. I think the route Im leaning towards is the following:
 - Bounce everything EMU related to WAV (26 gigs worth) - Use a program with AutoDemo so the sample plays when scrolled over (audition cs6 or ableton) - Resample with EMAX the sounds I actually want to build a preset with.
The name of the game in my mind is finding what you want quickly then using Mr. EMAX for character and flavor fun.

Also. it's not necessary to copy OS for every EM1. You place your OS in the folder with ALL your EM1s then use the "BATCH CONVERTER" function on the HxCFloppyEmulator software.
When you load your SD into EMAX each HFE file is a floppy. At least thats what EMAX thinks they are. I found myself clearing the memory over and over searching for sound.

My question about SCSI:
I have a Board 1 Rev A early 85 EMAX. It states on the FAQ impossible to upgrade. But the board has the socket for the SCSI controller and the pins for the ribbon. Can you not solder in the proper SCSI compatible ICs? Im just curious why technically you cant upgrade the early ones. And why did they include a socket and pins?

That statement comes directly from the Factory update directions.
I’ve never seen a REV1 board myself.

You’re positive it’s a REV1?

On Rev 2 boards, there are holes to put in a 28-pin socket for the boot EPROM (IC13).
The original non-scsi boot EPROM on REV2 boards is a 2732 24-pin EPROM.
The SCSI capable boot EPROM is a 2764 28-pin EPROM as the firmware was too large for the 2732.

I believe a REV1 doesn’t have the holes and circuit connections for the additional four pins of the larger EPROM.

Likely they made those boards before realizing they couldn’t add the additional firmware for SCSI into the 2732.

When doing the SCSI upgrade a 28-pin socket to replace the 24-pin (which gets removed as a step in the upgrade) is included with the kit.

I installed an HxC USB drive on my EMAX SE several months back because I couldn't get the original floppy drive working. Aside from about 100 Emax library banks that the eBay seller initially gave me, I haven't found any other HxC ready files; plus, it doesnt save new sounds, or even edited sounds. I was told that I need to update the HxC OS before it will save edits.
This is a total pain in the ass. I've been told by tons of people that all of the HxC file operations I need to perform (such as the OS update) can be done on a Mac. But all of the instructions I read specify using a PC.

Everything about this HxC drive is overly complicated and time consuming. Until there's a source for HFE files and a simple way to drag and drop them onto the drive, I would not recommend this product to anyone without an enormous amount of time and patience to deal with it. I regret installing it, and I've recently replaced it w a NOS floppy drive, also from eBay (around $30). The floppy drive works way better IMO.

If I had a PC, I would definitely try out the EMuSer, which I only recently discovered as an option. I'm thinking of buying a dedicated PC just to use for EMuSer.

Better off w/ the SD card version Rev. F.
Emuser instead of HxC USB for sure.

Id be happy to dump a boat load of HxC HFE files for you. Although Im not sure how you feel about giving it another go. Im using SE 4.0 on an early EMAX. You would just use your CFG file probably. Update should be easy? Just format the USB and dump the update file on it and run it on the HXC. Reformat then copy your HFEs with CFG back on it and go.

Ive noticed unusual behavior with the saving of banks though. It appears to overwrite everything in the HFE file with whatever you have loaded in the memory. Not sure about this yet. Still experimenting.

Ted

Here are pics I took when I had her cracked open. I will open her up again to do the sliders. There are 4 extra pins on IC13. None the other SCSI ICs mentioned in your FAQ are present on the board. Im hesitant to try if the factory says no go. Good job on the FAQ btw. Very helpful info.

#162?

Question:

I have to make a Mouser order soon does anyone know the specs or part numbers for the proper 10k sliders on the EMAX 1. EPR has 50k ones they claim do not affect operation and Ill go that route if need be.

Definitely according to factory not upgradeable PCB.
Though the 4 holes are there- so I don’t know what else (circuit wise) is missing…. unfortunately, there’s no one left (since Creative bought Emu years ago) that can answer why it wouldn’t work.

USB HxC ? What is this product exactly ? Do you mean an Gotek drive with an HxC firmware ?

The actual HxC device used with emax is the SD HxC Floppy Emulator (With SD Card).

> I've been told by tons of people that all of the HxC file operations I need to perform (such as the OS update) can be done on a Mac. But all of the instructions I read specify using a PC

I don't understand : the update is done on the device itself, not in the Mac or PC.
It appears that you are talking about a different product... Can you point me the exact product you have ?

screwy like fluttering audio. However, my own >samples created with mic input are smooth and save and can be recalled properly.

YES.
My library was acquired through the web and through links found on and around this group. When I first started wrapping HFE files using the HXC software I noticed many of the banks had an echo. For example if I hit a kick on the EMAX it would be grainy and have a delayish effect. Like a corrupt file perhaps.

The test file I focused in on was the ALEMBICBASS.

Downloaded from here as EM1. Bounced to wav file using EMXP. WAV is clear as a bell. Take same EM1 and wrap using HXC software as a HFE. Load HFE into EMAX and observe above.

Naturally I cant rule out user error because the EMAX and HXC are brand new to me. Also I cant open all the WILDER files unfortuantely. Not enough memory. But...bounce as wav and resample.

Perhaps some of them started life as EMAX II and still carry some attributes? No idea.

The biggest issue I discovered yesterday after sampling for hours was that I seemed to overwrite my work on the HXC.

Again this may be user error. I asked about the issue on the HXC forum and I will paste it here and I will report my findings.

It appears under certain circumstances the HFE banks get overwritten when you SAVEALL on the EMAX. Im still experimenting to sort the conditions.

For example:

The emax has 100 presets. Load a HFE.

01 Drums
02 Juno
03 Streets

Load 01 Drums to 99 and rename Drums99
Load 02 Juno to 20 and rename Juno20

Now SAVEALL. Erase memory.

Load HFE

01 Drums
02 Juno
03 Streets
20 Juno20
99 Drums99

Load 20 Juno20 to 06 and rename Juno06

SAVEALL. Erasememory.

Load HFE

06 Juno06

They are all gone. I must be missing something.

Hi,

Here is my recommendations for the Emax :

- The Switch setting is ID0-A (1) to ON, all others to off.

- I recommend to update the firmware :

http://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/SDCard_HxCFloppyEmulator_beta_firmware.zip

Basically to update the firmware, you have just to copy the update file (upd) to an empty fat32 sdcard, insert into the drive, press 2 buttons and switch-on the drive. More details into the readme file.
(Current version : V1.8.6.15a)

- I strongly recommend the usage of fast SD Card for the writing.
Unfortunately the Sandisk Ultra is not so good and introduce some write latencies.
The emax OS seems to be quite sensitive with write latencies.

The Sandisk Extreme series is quite good, go for it. I tried the 16GB version.
This is the one on the first page picture :
http://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/SDCard_HxC_Floppy_Emulator_User_Manual_ENG.pdf

For the sound corruption, I will check if there is an problem into the software. Please share / point me a EM1 source file causing the problem and the HFE result.
BTW please retry the same HFE file after the firmware update.

Best Regards,
Jean-François DEL NERO

Thanks for the recommendation! I will update the firmware today and crack her open and check the switches. I ordered sandisk extreme 16 just now.

I actually didnt know who you were until I pulled the card out of the HXC and your name scrolled across it LOL.

Nice job on the device.

Re: [emax] HxC help offering and a SCSI question.

Observations from todays experiments. Updating the firmware to 1.8.6.15a made saving not possible. DISKERROR. I checked the switches and apparently the device came in the mail with correct positions. I reloaded 1.8.2.40 and was able to save again.

The overwriting issue is looking like my misunderstanding of EMAX. When you bring up a HFE on the HxC and you use the LOADALL option then you can edit and SAVEALL. Everything remains intact. If you do not LOADALL and just make a preset and sample then SAVEALL it overwrites whatever HFE you have selected.

To whom it may concern here are some HxC HFEs all wrapped in SE40

Made blank HFE s naming convention alpha-zulu. Each one has preset 00 named 0. Thats it.

Hello,

I am trying fit HxC for my Emax plus HD SE SCSI.
I downloaded “HxC quick install floppy images” and it works.
but their OS is Emax 3.2 or SE1.1 version.(Emax_Bios_Disc.hfe and Emax_SE_Bios_Disc.hfe)
I need Emax Plus1.0 OS by .hfe format.
Does anyone have good idea?

Sunao

Re: HxC help offering and a SCSI question.

2016-02-26 by ritcci@...

Also you dont need HFE format for the OS. You wrap your EM1s using your OS with the HxC software.

Dump your EM1s into a folder.
Dump your OS into the same folder. Should be called emaxos.emx no matter what version it is.
If you are confused which version of OS you are looking at use EMXPN to check it.

Open HxC floppy software.
BATCH CONVERT. Select input folder. Select output folder.

Dump the HFEs onto your freshly formatted card.
Make sure you have a config file for the HxC. You can generate one with the software. Or use the one you have in the premade images.

If it doesnt work try a different OS. I had a few different copies of SE and had luck with SE4.0.

HAVE FUN!

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
