Trouble creating SE UPGRADE Disk

Trouble creating SE UPGRADE Disk

2016-03-03 by emaxemaxemaxemax@...

Hello all,

I'm new here and to EMAX. I recently got an EMAX 1 rack mount. It's got OS 3.2. Drive seems fine, and apart from a few noises audio outputs, all seems pretty good.

I've poked around and learned how to (sort of) use EXMP and OMNIFLOP. Bought about 50 DS/DD disks and i've written about 45 or so floppies with the banks I've downloaded off the internet. I'm using Windows 7 64bit to this on. All but a few worked in the EMAX so far - which seems good to me. OS loads and banks load and play.

I've tried so many different ways of creating the SE UPGRADE disk without success though.

OMNIFLOP:

-Formatting in the EMAX first, them writing the IMG file to the auto detected "EMAX STANDARD 800KB" format doesn't seem to work. I get an "out of space" error or too much data issue.

-Formating with EXMP and choosing the 'NO OS" option works and OMNIFLOP writes with success. The disk, however, does not seem to work in the EMAX. Just a bunch of flashing lights and crazy stuff happens when I try to boot with it.

EXMP:

Tried converting the IMG file to an EM1 file with the IMG to EMX tool alongside EXMP, then writing it as bank to disk, but that didn't work either. I'm not sure if I did this correctly though.

Can anyone shed any expertise on all of this? It's not a huge deal to be stuck on OS 3.2, but would rathe robe running SE.

Thanks in advance!

I probably shouldnt give any advice because I yanked the disk drive. With that said Im running SE4.0 and there was no upgrading necessary. The OS is on every disk. It loads into the EMAX with the first thing you load and it refers back to it anytime you need to do anything. I dont know what the file structure looks like on the floppies but Im guessing there is an EMX file named something. Possibly EMAXOS.EMX Rename your OS of choice to whatever its called on a proven functioning disk. Load up the emax and whatever OS is on there will load SE or not.

Replace the OS on your floppy with this file and maybe happy time. SE4 (Its just the one Ive had luck with)

Here are all the OS disks

Once you decide which OS you want youll need to copy it to EVERY FLOPPY. Thats precisely why I pulled it out and went HxC. If you have anything besides the first gen of boards you can go SCSI.

For your pleasure, I have uploaded to the files section:
SEUPOMNI.img file

This can be used with OMNIFLOP to make the SE image.
This is a known working image- I use it anytime someone has asked me to make a disk for them over the last year or so, or when I have needed to upgrade a board sent to me for repair.

Cheers. Just tried it but it keeps saying not enough space on the floppy.

Formatted the floppy in the emax first, then try OMNIFLOP - can't get OMNIFLOP to detect it as a standard EMAX 800KB format.

Format a disk in EXMP with the blank OS option - this is the only way OMNIFLOP will give me the STANDARD EMAX 800kb format option to write to. But then this new image seems to not fit.

Confused still.

As I’ve stated, I’ve been using this image for quite some time.

1) are you using a DSDD disk?

2) The floppy you are using in the PC isn’t USB is it? USB floppy drives don’t work.

3) The fact that OMNIFLOP doesn’t detect an actual Emax formatted floppy is a telltale sign…
So it is likely something with your PC setup.
Did you properly install the omniflop driver? The symptom you are seeing I’ve seen when the driver wasn’t properly loaded.

Yes, using DSDD disks.

Tried 2 different internal drives. Omniflop drivers installed. I'm using OMNIFLOP64

Head scratching....

I'd say it's your 64-bit operating system. In our experience with many customers, the 64-bit OmniFlop driver hasn't turned out to be reliable.

I've of the opinion now that if you are going to use older gear, use a XP 32-bit with an internal floppy drive with OmniFlop. Try to use a 64-bit OS just isn't worth it (for floppy reasons and SCSI reasons).

Too bad Jason of Sherlock (OmniFlop) quit out when he did.

I would comment to say I AM using 32-bit, Windows 7 with Intel chipset motherboard.
I can also comment that my testing has shown floppy drive brand doesn’t seem to matter.

My PC is only used for EMAX functions with EMXP / Omniflop and IC programming in DOS
