I'm in for the Klee panel for sure. I have the PCB and parts kit so
need it to complete the package.

Thanks.

I plan to do one or the other.  The Klee is more likely assuming another board run which I have been watching for.  There is a small chance I will do both.

I'm in for the Klee panel. Can you give a price guestimate on these
panels? Maybe I'll order an MFOS just in case...

As usual, thanks for making this available. You're doing a wonderful
service to the synth diy community.

I might be in for two Klee panels if panel parts are easy to source.
Where can I see what Thomas White's Klee layout looks like?

I'll be posting the design this week, hopefully.
Panel parts shouldn't be bad.

id like to see the final design too, and get a rough idea of the cost of the klee panel. i have a second kit sitting around and id prefer to have a nice panel for it.

I'm thinking $80-$100.

The Thomas White rotary design is in teh top level directory of the
Files section for this group, and yes, the FPE is almost 3x what Scott
is proposing. That leaves a lot of dosh for 38 (?) super high end
switches.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Klee and MFOS sequencer

2009-03-16 by loopcycle

ok, looked quickly at the design and it looks badass.  i would most likely pick up a panel.
one criticism though--if you're going to do the electro music dot com graphic, make sure it reads

electro-music.com

(INCLUDE THE HYPHEN because electromusic.com would be wrong.)

i would like to put in a request for this panel design though.  can the pot mounting holes be punched for the smaller 16mm alpha pots instead of the larger bourns/spectrol pots?  should we poll the group to see who's using smaller alphas VS larger pots like the bourns?

ok, now here's a really stupid idea that i'd love:  punch the jack mounting holes small to accommodate 3.5mm jacks.  please dont beat me for suggesting it.  (im doing more and more diy with mini jacks these days and scaling back my 1/4" collection.)

I'm in for both and if it matters, I vote for holes for smaller alpha pots and "regular" 5mm LEDs that can easily be drilled/reamed out to accommodate spectral/lumex/whatever.

sure and sure.

what is the diameter for those 16mm, anyway? if folks need bigger it
would be easy to drill them bigger, eh?

the jacks... i think most people would beat you for that one....

Re: Klee and MFOS sequencer

2009-03-17 by wjhall11

So far as Will and I are concerned, the smaller holes are just fine (assuming they'd be in the same spot as the larger holes)- we'll drill them out no prob. But I'll warrant that you, Scott, would probably be willing to drill them out for someone who needs the service for a few bucks, right? So it's not like someone really needs to have a drill-press and step-drill to have a usable panel with the larger holes... you could do it for anyone who would rather pay a couple extra for it than drill for themselves.

A thought, tho - will our English step-drill neatly fit into metric holes to enlarge them? Hmmmm....

Oh, and another thought -- the knobs on this module will be small
(sorry, but otherwise it would be 8U and not laid out so nice), and the
16mm you get from Mouser have a bit longer shaft. They're nice for big
knobs, but not so much for small knobs.
But again, you can drill them out easily enough. An English step-drill?
You mean you step on it?
; )
I don't know what that is, but if it's a drill it should work.

I've already paid for my KLEE :-)

And with regards to format- all holes for jacks / pots / LEDs should confirm to MOTM standards...

I will join in the beating for all those 3.5mm people...

Will you be putting together hardware kits as well? I uploaded a BOM to here for the Klee Front Panel hardware a while back... happy to receive comments on that one

Warning: The opinions expressed in the following post belong to the individual poster(who can be reached for flogging at 123 fake street) and do not necessarily reflect those of ModularSynthPanels.

Actually, the size of the pots holes shouldn't matter, as afaik there aren't any tick marks around them, so you won't even notice if you use smaller ones and they aren't aligned perfectly, but I will cry if I have to use ugly, expensive and dull lumex led's :'(

Put me down for 1 Klee. (I have the PCBs and parts kit just waiting for this panel run.)

An absolute fair price (when you can't get a man down to just 5 bucks). The MFOS panel was also VERY expensive from FPE, but it has been a most welcome addition to my system and fits VERY nice in the center of a top row on an MOTM style synth. The KLEE is almost a full-rack width (19") wide, not quite, but close. A big panel, a legendary sequencer, and I see fit to spend a bit on the panel to have it sit in high fashion like the king it is. Thanks for putting this together Mr. Deyo, I am honored.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Klee and MFOS sequencer

ok, lets just say i was kidding about the 3.5mm jacks and skip the beatings ;)

i just measured my alpha pot with my handy-dandy digital caliper...im measuring

6.85mm

(rounded up to the nearest 0.05mm diameter across the threaded part of the shaft=thicker than the smooth part.) opening the calipers to 7.0mm gives just a tiny bit of play and would probably be a 'safe' bet.

it would really be nice to have the right hole size punched for the circular design so it looks good assembled (it can be a merry bitch to get those pots somewhat centered while swimming around in a big hole).

oh, im referring to the klee panel since i have a full kit waiting for it.

and really, i wont be too picky however the panel comes out. and i have a unibit for boring out holes so no biggie if a hole is small for the part i want to use.

Seriously? I thought it was going to be 7U wide. I might have to back out, or at least think hard about it first.

Yes, it is only about 7 spaces. I am exaggerating. Still bigger than many other modules ever created in MOTM format. When Scott posts an image we'll get a better idea.

Don't forget about thickness of the paint that is applied after the hole punching/drilling. Might add to that measurement more than anticipated. I use Alpha 16mm in my MFOS design and the KLEE is meant to use them as well.

one of each for me. and another vote for smaller holes... easier to drill out a hole that's too small than it is to shrink one that's too big.

Given that I've been bugging you about this for a year, yes, I'll take a Klee panel. And a CVS panel. And two Quantix panels. And....and.... and I'd better decide which of my children I need to sell to afford all this!

OK, I'd be up for a pair of KLEE panels.  I prefer large 1/4-inch format but I could live with the 3.5mm if need be.
Although TW's MFOS panel is one of the cooles things I've ever seen, I plan on a 3 x 16 linear format for my MFOS sequencer.  Sorta like a 960 with a growth disorder.

I'm in for a Klee panel.  I would prefer the holes for the small Alpha pots and 3.5 mm jacks.

So the Klee and MFOS seq's are finally nearing their day. My conundrum:
I don't want to order 50 expensive panels and sell 10. So...
How many folks are in for these sequencers?
They are Thomas White's great oval and circle designs. Thanks Thomas!

I'm trying to get the CVS in on this run, too, but it may take 'til the
next run, which will be happening very soon. I really really really
want to catch up this year, before everyone comes up w/ too many more
new designs!

Hey Scott,

I'm definately in for a Klee panel!! I would also like to get a CGS Prog/sequencer panel when you get that, when do you think that will happen?

Thanks,
Dave

The Prog/Seq! That reminds me, that CAD is already in the can at my old
metal fabbers. I'll get them on that since I need them to make some
more of the older designs anyway. There's no telling how long they'll
take -- could be two weeks, could be three months. That's why they're
my "old" metal fabbers.

I'm thinking probably $100, around $180 _less_ than FPE!

Hi Scott,

I noticed in Thomas's oval design he left out the gate bus 1 to load switch (a standard option in the design), will you be including this in your design, I hope so :)

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Klee and MFOS sequencer

Hi Dave,

I'm glad you are double checking the design. I think Thomas placed the bus 1 load switch next to the main CV output on the right side (the momentary switches are the large holes).

Thomas or Scott--what part number are the momentary switch holes designed for? I know we are getting about a 50/50% response on the "bore your own holes out" poll in the group here, but Bill/Will bring a good point because the size of those switch holes will force builders to choose certain hardware that may/may not be easily available.

Hans

Re: Klee and MFOS sequencer

Hi Hans,

It looks to me like the area you are talking about is for the main out LED and not for the "Gate Bus 1 to Load switch", I also noticed that all the individual CV outs have CV B, there is no CV A out.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Re: Klee and MFOS sequencer

2009-03-19 by Scott Deyo

Pushbuttons are a big pain to me because of the variation. I'm thinking
.25" because the MOTM "standard" is a momentary toggle like the 'ills
are going to do, though many of us may use .5" pushbuttons. Then the
issue arises of the silkscreen label, which needs to be farther away
from the .25" hole than the other switches, which is fine if you're
using the .5", but a bit goofy if you're using a toggle. For the Tellun
gate I used .5", but on the JH Krautrock I think I did .25" with the
legend farther up than usual. It's a muddle.

IF more people who use 3.5 mm (a ton of people i know use that standard) thought bridechamber sold panels in 3.5 mm, you might get more votes.

I had always thought bridechamber only did MOTM panels so i have never purchased one before.

thanks!

I've wanted to get into Frac, but I can't do CGS or Fritz (Elby and
Metalbox have dibs) and have enough trouble keeping up w/ MOTM. I
_want_ to, but it may take too long.

it's totally cool. if it can't happen don't sweat it. i still dig the panels. i'd like to scale down some of your designs for my own personal use if you don't mind :)

Count me in for a MFOS panel. I'd be interested in the Klee as well if another run was in the works.
