sx-210 still being investigated!

sx-210 still being investigated!

2005-07-02 by Mark Daborn

Hi, my SX-210 is still non functioning.
At present, after replacing the battery which had leaked everywhere, poly 8 mode produces mostly silence except occasionally when the correct tone sounds. The other occasions when it makes a sound, its almost as if its disregarding the parameters and creating a random patch!
Poly 4 mode only seems to have two voices sounding one of which is a shrill tone, the other almost appearing normal. When it does decide to make a noise, that is.
Mono mode just makes the loud shrill sound as if the filter is wide open with a lot of resonance.
The leds on the front seem to light up in random order and for other parameters than the one pressed!
Has anyone had or heard of similar behaviour as this? I plan to fault find the main pcb as soon as i can get a chance to do it. Any clues as to where to start first would be appreciated!
Someone i spoke to seemed to think that the due to the leaking battery, the board might have absorbed some of it and is creating shorts. It has been suggested that i soak the pcb in de-ionised water to try to draw out the conductive ions.
Thanks for all your help. If anyone has a copy of the service manual, that would assist me no end!

Seems as this is the situation.

I personally scrathed out all traces a the area, replaced most
components and point-to-point rewired the traces between them

It would be impossible to create a patch, with the parameters jumping
around. If the traces are not visually damaged, I suspect poor
connection / contact somewhere.

Hope you can locate the problem without destroying the sx.

This reminds me of my sx 240. I had a short somewhere. I went from no
sound to random jumping lights. I never isolated the short, but with a
few pieces of small foam board was able to stabalize the main pc board
within the frame to cut out the short in a good working position. I
would recommend using mono to at first. Some of my patches on poly 8
are noise, but in mono are heavenly. and vice vera..... My 210
functions perfectly and yet to run out of amazement over it's
capability. So please seek a pro before too much is done. Anyway good luck

I repaired my SX210 (battery leakage) by actually cutting off ALL the
traces, ICs and other components at the leakage affected area, and
rebuilding it by making point-to-point wiring and reinstallation of
the relevant component of course.

Usually when the battery leaks, it can do harm that is not visible to
the eye, so retracing is most of the times necessary and components
at the area are recommended to be replaced even if you can't see and
corrosion on them.

The problem you describe sounds like computer board malfunctioning
which is probably due to the leakage.

Hi,
Since my last post, the SX-210 has sat gathering dust in a vacant room at work awaiting the
skilled hands of my electronic engineer colleague.
I have, however, paid for and downloaded the SX-210 service manual.
His eyes lit up when he saw all the circuit diagrams and functional test procedures contained within...
He has told me that due to most of the components being "off-the-shelf", it's restoration is almost a certainty.
even if the main board is beyond repair, he pointed out that with the diagrams, he could re-design me a new one
that would do the job just as well.
However, we are assuming that the copy of the EPROM we took was sound and not corrupt!
If all goes to plan, i should finally gewt to hear just what a Kawai SX-210 sounds like in the near future!
