Can anyone help me in choosing exactly which monitor will give me the absolute BEST color accuracy and ease of use on the Mac G4.. I am only interested in 18" or larger. I currently am using a MagnaScan 20". Ed Shotwell

Hi, If you have a lot of money buy a BARCO. If not the LACIE ElectronBlue Monitors are a affordable and good choice. El 14/12/01 18:04, "Ed Shotwell" <edward@...> escribió:

Harvey, Is there any real reason to have a blue monitor? Is it just marketing hype or do they describe some special blue factor to making the screen image look better? I would think the blue would somehow influence your eyes to see the screen more "blue" or trick the eyes color receptors or something like that... Steadman

Ed,
That somewhat depends on your budget and calibrating software.

Steadman, I think it's mostly a marketing ploy, but..It's (the casing) a pretty dark blue (almost black) and I think with the back lighting of the monitor makes it appear black. Finally, with the hood and casing being dark it seems to really pull one's attention to the screen with less distraction...Or is that perhaps a justification on my part? What do I know, except to say that I like ours. :- ) Harvey Ferdschneider partner, SKID Photography, NYC > Harvey, > > Is there any real reason to have a blue monitor? Ed, As Harvey mentioned, don't forget the calibration issue. I have been happy with my 19" Sony GDM-F400. Can't vouch for it's accuracy compared to other monitors but for accuracy I rely on good monitor calibration software and hardware to get the most out of what I do have. I just moved up from Monaco EZColor to ColorVision Optical with the monitor spyder and it looks to be a very good package. I think it's really black. If not, its so dark, it looks black. Images DO look much better against this very dark background. jerry Steadman Uhlich wrote:

MacWorld found the performance of the LaCie Electron Blue monitors with the LaCie Blue Eye hardware monitor calibrator to be very close to that of the Barco. The LaCie 19" lists for $399, and the 22" lists for $999. The Blue Eye calibrator lists for $499. The Blue Eye connects to the G4 via USB. This seems to be the best solution for under $5,000. In the hunt for monitors, I've had great success with a company called Monitor Onsale ( www.monitoronsale.com ). They're a click 'n mortar selling mostly refurbished items at very good prices. I've gotten three or four monitors over the years from them, both for myself and for clients, and have been absolutely satisfied. I have two running right now, one of which I bought more than two years ago. They sell loads of Viewsonics...have the 21" G810 for $189 right now. You have to keep an eye on stock and be ready to pounce as they sometimes have the "pro series" monitors available, too. FWIW, I have a G810, which is only from the "graphics series," and I find it quite good. Happy Hunting, Matthew Born I processed a roll of B&W last weekend...first time in 20 years. The advent of digital printing has made it a possibility for me, since all I need is chemicals and a changing bag. Went like a dream...then I produced the nastiest, grainiest, flatest pix I've ever taken. Hideously dark negs. I trawled the net for a few hours, talked to my dad (a very seasoned photographer & traditional darkroom guy) and couldn't find anything that would account for that. I mean, I know over agitation and warm chemicals cand produce the effect to some degree, but this was pretty bad, and I had religiously followed Illford's guidelines in an effort to start off from a baseline. Five days later, I checked the meter in my old Olympus OM1...yep, you guessed it, overexposing by about 4 stops. (I use it a lot, but always with a handheld meter.) Something here about forrests and trees...

I am about to install a new computer dedicated to Photoshop, IP, etc. With all the monitors out there, I am looking for recommendations as to which is best. I am considering the Sony Artisan-or whatever it's called now-and it's about $1,700 which is doable but, if there is something close for substantially less, I'd like to know about it. Thanks.

Subject: [Digital BW] Very basic B&W question
If you start with a black and when negative that scanned as a color
image, do you convert your image to grayscale before sending to the
printer?
The reason I ask is I'm wondering how to correct a color cast in a b&w
print. If it's already gray scale, how do you correct the (magenta)
cast?

One of the gurus of these lists, who hasn't been posting for a while, told me that he's never seen anything wrong with a properly set-up Lacie. And he also told me that he preferred the 19" to the 21" because the 19" didn't "stretch the physics" as much. Never got a clarification from him on exactly what he meant by that, though. So I got a 19". Cheap. One of the guns quit on it, though, and I had to send it back. LaCie replaced it in a timely fashion, no hassle, although I got what looks like a refurb instead of a brand new one, which I wasn't wild about but didn't feel like going through the hassle of arguing about it. This one has been working fine for over a year. I've been searching for a left-over Hitachi 21" (remember RasterOps?), because I've had one for years, and it's too old now, but it was great for a long time. But I can't find one, and they're apparently not made any more. James

One person's oninion is certainly a useful datapoint in making any equipment decision. Soliciting as many individual opinions as possable allways is wise. But there have been direct comparison reviews that looked at how accurately each display could be callibrated etc. that are hard for an individual user to make. Add up all this input and an informed decision can be made. My 2¢...I've heard great things about both monitors, and have personally experienced great things with the LaCie Blue as a professional retoucher. I have had one for several years without noticeable change in color (of course I keep it calibrated, but even then it doesn't change much visually). The LaCie has been by far the best investment in monitors I have tried compared to previous monitors over the last 15 years. SuperMac, Radius, Phillips Brilliance, a cheap Sony, lots of clients' Sonys of medium range cost, Apple monitors both LCD and CRT, Barco... not a single one of them has paid off as well as the LaCie in terms of quality over lifetime per dollar invested. Unless you either have extremely fine close up vision and can tolerate looking at tiny type at maximum monitor resolution, or don't use palettes much, the 19 is going to be a little small. It all depends on your work habits of course. If you choose the LaCie, you can buy their dedicated puck or not, or so I have been told, to use for calibration. Most monitor calibrators/software on the market now will do just as good a job, apparently, and be available for use on non-LaCie monitors as well. ___________________________ The LCDs are very seductive, but I still find them to be less predictable with their extreme 400 or 800:1 contrast ratios... you need to "dumb" them down to D65 from 9300K and reduce their contrast levels noticeably if you want to work in color as well as B&W. They are wonderful monitors for anything besides critical monitor-to-print matching; still I know a number of pros who use them happily despite that slowly dwindling consensus, mostly because of their ease on the eyestrain quotient during long working hours. Something to consider, although I am sending my LCD back at the end of its lease because it ended up going back in the box and waiting for the lease to run out (I hate leases for this very reason). I think that if I were in your shoes, I'd buy one of the 20+ inch WUXGA (1920x1200) LCDs from Viewsonic or Samsung. I haven't tried them personally, but they're in that price range, have high resolution (albeit not quite as high as a CRT), are perfectly sharp compared to a CRT, and can be turned vertically on the fly for seeing vertical images in high res. Then, I'd get a smaller LCD for a second monitor to put the tools on. -- Ciao, Paul D. DeRocco Paul mailto:pderocco@...

Hi Stephen, I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB, which is the same unit as the large Lacie but without the shade. It's generally a little cheaper than the Lacie, and it's trivial to make an adjustable shade out of some stiff black card. Sure, it does look homemade, but it's actually more flexible than a fixed shade as I can slide it back out of the way if I want to show something to a group of people or else slide if forward to make it much deeper than the fixed shades ever are. Overall I'm very happy with the monitor and appreciate the large size. However... I'm a lurker on a couple of colour-management and pro press type lists (http://www.lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/colorsync-users/ and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/colortheory/). The guys there regard the Sony Artisan as the undisputed benchmark. The Lacies/Mitsis are known as decent products, but the received wisdom was that if you have the money, get the Artisan. Given that these same people seem to think that the (very expensive and widely praised) Eizo CG220 flat-panel is not up to the mark, it seems safe to assume that their standards are high. I realise that all this is hearsay but if you search the recent history of the groups you should find some info that is closer to the source. HTH -= mike =-

Thanks Mike It was my understanding all along that the Sony was as good as it gets but I was hoping to get close for less money. However, when you go ahead and spend the money it generally works out better. I appreciate your response.

AnnMarie,
I replaced a 24" Dell with a 21" Samsung 214T two years ago. What a difference it made in the amount of remakes that I had to do. When I was using the Dell, there was a problem with blue/green colors which the monitor could not distinguish even though it was profiled. It was like it was color-blind. The Samsung monitor worked well right out of the box, but when I profiled it, I seldom need to do any reprints now.
I was so pleased with the performance of the Samsung, I purchased a second one for another work station. This second new 214T cost less then $200. I could not justify paying ten times (or more) that amount for an Eizo when these work as well as they do. I do have two 17" Eizo monitors, and they are great, but the cost?????
The Dell is now connected to a DVD player; viewing movies is a function which it works well.

I purchased two new Samsung LED monitors recently after the power company lost my neutral and fried my very liked older Samsung monitors. The new XL2370, and PX2370 were terrible to work with. I could not get a good print because changing positions of your head, realitive to the monitor, caused the color, contrast, and exposure to change appearence. My old Samsung 214T monitors were very good. I purchased two NEC PA231W monitors and I like them very well. In the 20 year that I have been doing computer graphics, I like them best of all the monitors I have ever used. They are not what I would call inexpensive though; about $850 each. But then I paid much more then that for my Apple and Sony 20" CRT s many years ago. The reviews say the bigger NEC PA series monitors are better then the 23". But limited desk space and budget kept me from getting those. Ben [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

http://bit.ly/mPXwp6 also, make sure you have a 30-bit graphics card (e.g., ATI FirePro V5800) to take full advantage of the monitor.

I may need to upgrade my monitor, as I may get a couple of commercial retouching jobs. One of them is very picky about color. Currently, I have a Dell 2209WA, an inexpensive monitor with an e-IPS panel. It's pretty good, but it does lose detail when tone over rgb 250 or so, and it's not all that uniform. (I do calibrate and profile it with a Spyder 3.) I'm considering one of the NEC monitors with Spectraview II software, perhaps the PA-231W-BK. http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa231w-bk . While it would be nice to get something bigger, like a PA241W, they get much more expensive. I'll use my Dell as a second monitor to hold Photoshop pallets. While I have a Spyder 3, I've heard that being able to adjust the monitors LUT directly is better than calibrating color through the video card, hence the Spectraview II software. While the software can use the Spyder 3 puck, it might be better to get the recommended I1 Pro, although I'd probably buy a retail version that can be used on any monitor instead of the NEC specific version. I'd appreciate comments as to whether this sounds like a good plan, or if there's other solutions around the same cost that might be better. Peter De Smidt

The retail version of the EyeOne Display 2 would lose the special tuning that the bundled version offers. Moving up to a Spyder4, or an EyeOne Display Pro, would provide special tuning for that display type, and function with the Spectraview software. C. Hi Peter.. I would highly reccommend the NEC PA series with spectra view.. However you probably need to stay off the 23 " model.. It's gamut , for whatever reason is on'y 70% of the other monitors in that group. So you'll need to to step up to the 24 or 27 incher.. I guess that's why it's so cost effective.. Check B&H 's prices ..their good on this product. Since switching to spectra view I am very impressed with it....and the monitors.. Spectra view allows for pre-calibration in several modes and will change the hardware settings of the monitor as you select what you want to work on.. D50, D6500, SRGB, Movie standard etc.. I was scepticle at first but have gotten past that.. jimbo

I may need to upgrade my monitor, as I may get a couple of commercial
retouching jobs. One of them is very picky about color. Currently, I
have a Dell 2209WA, an inexpensive monitor with an e-IPS panel. It's
pretty good, but it does lose detail when tone over rgb 250 or so, and
it's not all that uniform. (I do calibrate and profile it with a
Spyder 3.)
I'm considering one of the NEC monitors with Spectraview II software,
perhaps the PA-231W-BK.
http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa231w-bk . While it
would be nice to get something bigger, like a PA241W, they get much
more expensive. I'll use my Dell as a second monitor to hold Photoshop
pallets.
While I have a Spyder 3, I've heard that being able to adjust the
monitors LUT directly is better than calibrating color through the
video card, hence the Spectraview II software. While the software can
use the Spyder 3 puck, it might be better to get the recommended I1
Pro, although I'd probably buy a retail version that can be used on
any monitor instead of the NEC specific version.
I'd appreciate comments as to whether this sounds like a good plan, or
if there's other solutions around the same cost that might be better.

Peter, I recently went through the whole monitor thing, when I upgraded operating system to windows 7 and upgraded Photoshop to PS 6. I had put this monitor decision for many months waiting to make the above upgrades. The delay actually gave me a lot of time to investigate what for me would be the best all around value for my situation. Finally, my choice was NEC PA241W with spectraview. I could not be happier. The monitor is superb and the calibrations are very simple to do. My only regret is not doing it sooner. Good luck with your choice of a new monitor. Best, Phil

Hello! I have a project to print monochrome from an r1900 via QTR. Any advice on printing on clear acetate or translucent Vellum? This will be a large tiled piece. Thanks Max [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I would second that "EIZO" thought. We did side by side comparisons with the NEC and now have 2 EIZO's --Fred Fischer Lab Manager Tom Fritz Studios, Inc. 2930 W. Profile and print. I ran some test prior to printing platinums on vellum and the ink load needs to be reduced, but it profiled fine. If you plan on printing a lot on it, but a special vellum coated for Inkjet.
