Steadman,
I think it's mostly a marketing ploy, but..It's (the casing) a pretty dark blue (almost black) and I think
with the back lighting of the monitor makes it appear black.

Finally, with the hood and casing being dark it seems to really pull one's attention to the screen with less
distraction...Or is that perhaps a justification on my part?

What do I know, except to say that I like ours.  :- )
