David,

Are you selecting the Epson 1160 printer driver (rather than the XP 1160
version) in the Printer box? There should be two 1160 printers showing up,
and you need to select the correct one. If that is OK, what about the Epson
Status Monitor? Is that installed properly?

Bob,

I'm selecting the Epson 1160 driver, rather than the generic XP
driver. I have installed both the driver and the status monitor that
are available on the Epson site. However, I do not get a reading of
the ink levels in the print dialogue boxes. Apart from this, the
print dialogue is the same as before (i.e. I can establish a series
of profiles under the "advanced" tab, depending on how I want to
print). However, when I try to print, I get a "comunication error",
which seems to be pointing to a cable problem - but I don't think
that there is a problem with the cable, as I have treid both USB and
parallel port connections, and end up with the same problem.

Regards

David

Is your printer attached to a local network? I get this exact problem
printing from XP Pro to a 1290 on another computer BUT I just ignore
it, even though the message Coms Error comes up I can see disc
activity on the other machine so I just leave it and the print
prints - no status of ink levels though. Certainly no cable problems.
I hope it helps.

John,

It's not on a network - it's just stand-alone. I do seem to be able
to print now, albeit that it takes much longer than before (the file
size is about 250MB from a 4x5 negative), but I still get hte
communication error message.

Thanks

David

This sounds like you haven't loaded the chipset drivers for your
motherboard. Your hardware (USB, etc.) will not work properly without the
correct drivers. NT 5.1 (Win XP) is very fussy that way...

Barry,

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is a motherboard chipset driver,
and where can I locate what I need to install?

Thanks

David

David,

If yours is an motherboard with an Intel chipset, then you simply go to
Intel's website and download the latest driver for your board. If it is not
Intel, then someone else will have to answer!

Thanks, Bob, but after several days of frustration bordering on
desperation, I have just uninstalled XP to return to ME, and
everything is now working fine - I have just run off a few of my
favourite prints in celebration.

Cheers

Re: [Digital BW] Windows XP / Epson 1160 printer driver

2003-09-27 by Barry Kelsall

This is why I like to build my own boxes - I know exactly what is in them. I
have an Asus P4PE motherboard that uses the Intel 845 PE chipset. It came
with a CD that contained all the necessary drivers for my OS, NT 5.0
(Win2K). It also contains utilities for obtaining updates automatically over
the Internet from Asus.com.

You need to contact the manufacturer of your computer to find out how &
where to get drivers. You may have documentation that could help you. You
might even have that magical CD. But if your hardware was manufactured
before the release of XP, that CD is useless.

I also strongly recommend that you do not *upgrade* to XP; instead do a
clean install. It is a pain to have to start over & re-install all of your
software, but you will have a more stable system for it. In fact, I would
buy a new hard disk, & format it using NTFS & have your new system live on
it. FAT32 & FAT16 are the source of many of Windows instabilities.

Good luck, David. The journey you have embarked upon is not trivial, but
once successfully completed, you will have a solid OS.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
