Is your printer attached to a local network? I get this exact problem printing from XP Pro to a 1290 on another computer BUT I just ignore it, even though the message Coms Error comes up I can see disc activity on the other machine so I just leave it and the print prints - no status of ink levels though. Certainly no cable problems. I hope it helps. John
