Ideas on getting a Nikon LS2000 working on a Thunderbolt iMac?

2013-07-04 by jespes2

Hello,

I have an old but functioning Nikon LS2000 35-mm film scanner. This is a SCSI scanner, but I use it on my Firewire-equipped iMac with an old Ratoc SCSI-to-Firewire adapter.

Here's my question:

I need to buy a new iMac. Has anyone gotten a SCSI scanner like this to work on a modern iMac via Thunderbolt? EG, can I plug this Ratoc adapter into Apple's Firewire-to-Thunderbolt adapter? In other words, daisy-chaining two adapters -- SCSI-to-Firewire, then Firewire-to-Thunderbolt.

I realize this is a long-shot question. And I hope it's not inappropriate in this forum.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi, I use my SCSI Betterlight with a new Macbook Pro with daisy-chained adapters without any problems (Thunderbolt-Firewire, Firewire-SCSI). In lots of ways it has been easier to set up than when I was using it with SCSI. The only problem I can see for you is getting software for the scanner that runs on Mountain Lion. I know the Nikon software wasn't updated for the Intel Macs. Can you get Silverfast for your scanner?

David,
Thank you--that's very encouraging to hear.
Re the scanner software, I find that Vuescan works well with the LS2000 on Mountain Lion in my current setup (meaning with the SCSI-Firewire adapter and an older Intel iMac).

Thanks again and best,
JP

I have a related question, hope I'm not hijacking the thread. I too have a Nikon LS2000 which has been cleaned and adjusted, works fine. However I'm using a ten year old PC, with a SCSI adapter card (Adaptec AHA-2940). I'm running XP Pro. I'm due for a new PC and I hope I can run Windows 7 on it, having heard bad reports on Windows 8.

Will I be able to use my LS2000? Sounds like it might be doable.

Thanks all!

Paul

Others might have managed it but I haven't managed to get SCSI working with windows since XP Pro. I'd keep you old PC, refresh it (reformat the disk reload XP Pro, then load up just the necessary software) and use that with the scanner. Do everything else on the new PC.

You will find the old PC is much faster and runs the scanner perfectly (as it will in perpetuity if not connected to the Internet!) whilst the new PC is much quicker for everything else.

VueScan is much less expensive than Silverfast for running scanners on the
Mac side.

David,

Thanks for the quick response!

Actually I've considered that very strategy, just use the old PC with the scanner. But my office is rather crowded as it is!

I did a Google search on that Ratoc adapter but apparently it's no longer in production. If I could find one, that might work as the new PC probably has Firewire - or could accept a Firewire card.

I may end up going a whole different route. It seems some folks are using a digital camera with a macro lens (and maybe an extension tube) to simply make a copy of the slide or 35mm negative, with good success. Certainly a lot quicker and the new cameras have excellent resolution with a high pixel count.

Appreciated your thoughts!

Regards,

Paul

For those of you with a Firewire-to-SCSII adapter:

What adapter are you using?

Do you have any idea where I can buy one?

I know the Raytoc adapter works well, but it is no longer made, and used prices have skyrocketed. The only web site I have found that lists them (a clearance centre supposedly in Idaho) is not functioning, is traceable to a Russian server, and claims to have its warehouse in a town whose post office has never heard of it...

I'm using my Nikon LS2000 daily with Windows 7 and Vuescan. It also works
with Silverfast. The Nikon software will not work with Windows 7.

Thanks Tina,

But do you use some sort of adapter to get from the scanner's SCSI cord to your computer?

Sorry, Paul! I don't know where my mind is this morning. I'm using an
LS5000 with a USB connection. If you could find a good used LS5000, it
would be worth the upgrade.

Paul, The Raytoc scsi to firewire is , I think, the best. All of these things have pretty much stopped production and the scsi to firewire chip is no longer made. Belkin made one also but it wasn't as good I understand.. You are after one that has switchable parameters to deal with system or software issues.. I just searched eBay and their is one out there.. 350.00 ...Here's the url http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ratoc-FR1SX-Firewire-to-SCSI-adapter-/330950295349?pt=US_FireWire_Cables_Adapters&hash=item4d0e2cbf35#ht_735wt_1213

If you want to run a new OS and system this is the path you need to take.. The other option is to just keep an older computer going to run it.. If you move up to an LS5000 which is USB .. and you want to run WIN 7 or OSX Leopard you'll need to use Viewscan or Silverfast.. Nikon Scan 4.0.3 does run on Vista and OSX 10.4.3 ..I know it does not work on OSX 10.5 and Win 7..

So it's choices based on how you want to end up.. A little coaching on the Raytoc.. FR1SX ..If you can afford one it's as a good a place as any to have a few bucks sit .. Their's a lot of 20k scanners and scan backs out there that use them. I have a Betterlight 8k back and we were lucky as the owner of Betterlight gave us all a heads up that these things were going away so many of us picked up a few. I've seen them for over 400 bucks.. Anyway maybe not the best news but at least you have choices..

Re: Ideas on getting a Nikon LS2000 working on a Thunderbolt iMac?

Just my two bits

I've found that buying a perfectly working old computer is much less expensive than trying to make older peripherals to work with new computers, new OS's and any updated version.

For example, I'm on a Mac platform : I'm the owner of two nice scanners (films and flat) and none is supported anymore; so I went on eBay and bought for cheap, a nice G5 non-Intel. Installed the OS, software and needed drivers. I have know a "Scanning section" and when it's done, I import the files via wireless connexion to my new computer and this is a very workable (and cheap) solution.

Good luck!

Tina, I Suggest that you look up the patch for the Nikon Scan software. I
have Nikon scan running on a Win 7 machine with it and I have used it that
way for quite some time. It can be a bit much for people that don't do ANY
computer maintenance but for those with more skills it is really quite easy.

Thanks Tina,

But do you use some sort of adapter to get from the scanner's SCSI cord to

I agree. I also run it on win 7 32bits. I had to tell the installer that it was a vista program or it would not install if I recall. I think I still have its properties set to run as a vista program as I had issues with running it under 7. Do not recall but I used it last night again with a LS 4000 ED. Amazing scanner.

Paul, The Raytoc scsi to firewire is , I think, the best. All of these
things have pretty much stopped production and the scsi to firewire chip is
no longer made. Belkin made one also but it wasn't as good I understand..
You are after one that has switchable parameters to deal with system or
software issues.. I just searched eBay and their is one out there.. 350.00
...Here's the url
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ratoc-FR1SX-Firewire-to-SCSI-adapter-/330950295349?p

If you want to run a new OS and system this is the path you need to take..
The other option is to just keep an older computer going to run it.. If you
move up to an LS5000 which is USB .. and you want to run WIN 7 or OSX
Leopard you'll need to use Viewscan or Silverfast.. Nikon Scan 4.0.3 does
run on Vista and OSX 10.4.3 ..I know it does not work on OSX 10.5 and Win
7..

So it's choices based on how you want to end up.. A little coaching on the
Raytoc.. FR1SX ..If you can afford one it's as a good a place as any to have
a few bucks sit .. Their's a lot of 20k scanners and scan backs out there
that use them. I have a Betterlight 8k back and we were lucky as the owner
of Betterlight gave us all a heads up that these things were going away so
many of us picked up a few. I've seen them for over 400 bucks.. Anyway maybe
not the best news but at least you have choices..

Hey Eric,
That's good news .. but I need to ask you ..did you do anything special to get it to install.. I have a Dell 690 / 8 core 64 bit running win 7 and tried it and it was a no go. I would love to have it run on this machine.. So what did you do? It's 32 bit software..

Man, I read the article. I did not have all this problem. The 4000 is firewire. When I plugged it in, I just add to point the new hardware found to the nikon CD. It found the driver and installed the scanner. The issue I had was to install nikonscan under win 7, not the scanner itself. I guess I was lucky,

Re: Ideas on getting a Nikon LS2000 working on a Thunderbolt iMac?

2013-07-05 by Billy C

Running Ed Hamrick's 'VueScan' under LINUX on a dedicated scanner box would be an economical solution.

As long as you use a compatible Firewire card, or an adapter since second gen Firewire is NOT backwards compatible, your off to the races.

Ubuntu or Debian Linux distributions are among the easiest to use coming from Mac/Windoz.

FWIW ... my scanner box is a SINGLE Core IBM workstation, bought used for $199 and running VueScan v9.2.11 via Ubuntu 12.04LTS

... good luck

Folks,

I'm the original poster. I'm pleased to see people still successfully using these quality old scanners.

Here's some info addressing my original question. Recall that I am trying to get the Nikon LS-2000 working on a modern Mac that DOESN'T have Firewire. Previously I used a Ratoc SCSI-to-Firewire cable, which works well with Vuescan. I'm posting this in case anyone in the future searches here for help with similar questions re the LS2000.

I emailed Ed Hamrick, maker of Vuescan software, and asked: "Will Vuescan work with a Nikon LS2000 if connected to an iMac (Snow Leopard) using the Adaptec USB2Xchange cable?"

Ed's answer: "Yes, this should work well. Make sure you set the SCSI ID in the LS2000 to zero."

FYI a USB2Exchange is a SCSI-to USB connector that pops up on Ebay used.

Again, thanks to all and best regards. JP
