AGH!! My dual zone ride cymbal is messing up!

AGH!! My dual zone ride cymbal is messing up!

2003-01-26 by underneathheaven <realvast@swbell.net>

Crap crap crap!! Here I am playing along with my favorite cds, the
music cranked up, and I'm banging away on my drums, life is
good...then all of a sudden while I'm playing my dual zone ride
cymbal, the PCY65S, it starts messing up! When I hit the pad
surface for the ride cymbal, sometimes it gives me the crash sound I
have programmed for the edge of the cymbal. And when I hit the edge
of the cymbal it always gives me this wierd muted choked cymbal
sound, like I'm choking the crash. I already turned off the module
and reinserted the jacks to both the module and cymbal and still its
acting funny! I do bang on the thing pretty hard and I guess its
not as stable as banging on a tom pad but I'm not sure if I messed
it up! I have a one year warranty with the store i bought it from
and they'll fix me up in the store, but this really sucks! :( I
never needed you guys more than now! So please help! Thank you!!

Ok I step away from the set to write this post and now all of a
sudden it works perfectly. Hopefully this will keep up, but
suggestions are still welcome! I'll keep playing to see if it
contines to work!

OK after further examination, the cymbal works fine when there is no
sound assigned to its edge. I'll test it more tomorrow, I'm too
tired tonight to try anything more. i need some chicken supreme
pizza!

Hi underneath,

There may be something going on with your cymbal, but then again
there may not. E-drums and cymbals respond better to finesse than to
power. If you're wailing away at the cymbal, you may be hitting it
awkwardly, causing the FSR and piezo to react to each other oddly.
After all, they aren't that far away from each other, and their
interaction is a bit of a delicate dance. When you get up tomorrow
(with indigestion from the pizza), try positioning the cymbal so
that you can play it as a ride, away from the edges, without hitting
the raised section unless you want to crash. If that doesn't work,
something might be wrong. Also, it's easy to choke the cymbal
unintentionally, whether riding or crashing, if your stick doesn't
clear the raised rim fast enough after you hit it.

Re: AGH!! My dual zone ride cymbal is messing up!

2003-01-26 by underneathheaven <realvast@swbell.net>

OK so i got up this morning refreshed but with a tummy ache and
decided to check up on my ride cymbal. Apparently if I hit the ride
part of the pad softly I'll always get the ride sound. But if I hit
it a little harder, it crashes like the edge of the rim is
programmed to. When I hit the edge of the pad I get that choked
cymbal sound. I assigned only one sound to the pad, like just the
ride sound for example, and it works fine. Is it possible that
maybe that sensitivity button got messed around with or something in
the back? I really hope I'm not hitting these things too hard.
Last night I broke the tip of my drumstick but I think its when I
hit the rack. This morning I woke up and my hands have all these
little red spots on them. Guess its time for some gloves and some
more pizza! Dr. Ed help me!

It's hard to tell whether you're hitting too hard, or something's
not right with the cymbal. I don't think that the cymbal would act
funny if you accidentally flipped the corresponding DIP switch on
the back of the module (almost impossible to do, I might add). It
would just make the cymbal louder. One thing you might check is
whether you have the pad type for that input set correctly in the
trigger menu. If it's not "PCY ride," the cymbal might react funny.
But I'm betting that you're hitting the cymbal too hard for the two
trigger types to remain sufficiently isolated. Hitting the Yamaha
stereo cymbals, or any gum rubber stereo cymbal, correctly takes
some trial and error (more like glancing blows than head on). The
more you stray from precision through sheer power, especially in the
early days, the more likely is the cymbal to misbehave. By the way,
gloves aren't a bad idea, if only to protect your fingers from
blisters and bruises and give your wrists a little support. The
rubber can take its toll.

I'd also add that you should be using a light stick on the rubber
pads. A heavy stick like a 5A will be torture on your hands and
wrists after a while.

I use Pro Mark 747 Hickory's. I've tried several brands and models
but nothing has the 747's size and light weight. I have a pair of Vic
Firth Terry Bozzio Phase Ones that I like, but they are a little
heavier than the 747's. I use them occasionally but find that
repeated use causes sore hands and wrists.

Hey Ratzo, thanks for the advice. Right now I'm using 7A on the set
and already broke a tip by hitting the plastic frame. I don't
really like 5A for some reason. Actually I'm trying to find out
what I like again, I can't remember from when I was in highschool.
How about the zildijan z4? I was looking at a pair of those and I
just ordered some zil Tim Alexander sticks. Seen those?

I think I was hitting the pad edge too hard to be honest with you
all. I'll save all that for my crash I guess. Or maybe I'll just
take it easy on the cymbals. But thats hard when your trying to
learn some fear factory and you act like your shooting a video! :)

I think I may be dealing with a vibration issue here. If i hit the
pad surface of the ride cymbal hard enough, I'll get the crash sound
programmed for the edge, so I guess I'll hit it softer from now on.
But that doesnt explain why last night the edge of the pad was
giving me that wierd muted cmybal sound, however, as of today it no
longer does that. I dont know...
