Au Revoir

Au Revoir

2004-04-05 by NYMOs

Hi there,

Just wanted to let you know (not that you're interested!) that it is time
for me to leave this list as I sold my AN1x last week.

Why did I sell a great synth ??

well...its the keyboard touch...no matter how light I played, that dang
aftertouch on the clav sound was driving me insane...the AT on the string
pad, the AT on the solo lead (maybe ok, but not on every note :(

Anyways..you get the picture.

I'm sorry to see it go cause it had great sounds and arps.

Bought a Prophecy instead..lets see how I go with that !

Until next time..... (I most probably get another one and play it from a
different keyboard ;)

Cheers

Not liking the touch is one thing, but saying that you hated
the AT on some of the pads is really ridiculous as you can just
edit those sounds to turn off AT !!!

What??? Replacing An AN1x For A Prophecy? The An1x Leaves It On The Dust!

RE: [AN1x] Au Revoir

Agreed, it's a keyboard touch I rate about a 3 of 10. Oh, there's lots
worse out there. But the point given that you could just edit the patch to
disable the aftertouch on certain pads is exactly what I've been doing for 5
years.

Further, when I play a lead where I must have the aftertouch working I just
control the AN1x via MIDI from a better feeling keyboard (my 01W). Then,
since it's a lead, my left hand is free to work the ribbon, wheels and knobs
on the AN.

Things could be worse... on April 17 a bunch of us will venture into a large
music store and abuse their synths. At that time I plan on testing the ION
for its feel. IIRC it doesn't even have aftertouch. Again, things could be
worse.

The ION keyboard is a step below the MS2000 keyboard IMHO and both
are inferior to the AN1x (again, IMO.) However, both the ION and the
MS2K offer a plethora of knobs which makes the programming/playing
experience far more immediate than the AN1x. Each of them have their
own character so you much to choose from sound wise.

Re: [AN1x] Au Revoir

I would go as far to say, while both the ION and MS2k are similar inside (dsp types, emulating a VA synth) they do work different. I have both. I prefer the MS2k to work out sounds and act as a midi controller these days. The ION is not good as a midi controller (the encoders are way out of range of most of what you wish to control). Other areas is the way they behave. They each has some positive points and a few negatives. They are different.

I had my MS2k longer than the ION, so my bias might be major factor. I do not like the way ION works or forces you into the small display for a lot of the functions. The documentation is lacking (sysx and full midi docs) so it use to a computer system is limited. Not the same for the MS2k. When the docs come out, I see a lot of tools coming forth to help this out some.

I do like the 4 channels of midi I can feed the ION, opposed to the 2 (trick) channel on the MS2k. I respect the ION for forcing me to control all my parameters via midi (due to the bad encoders on the ION). That has been a learning experience. I do like the filter controls on the ION.

I found both benefited from being further processed with outside filters and effects. Such as the filter queen, eq killer, dsp1024 and so forth. They both work well together as well. I been able to deal with both (which was my intention when I purchased the ION, to complement the MS2k). I do find myself using the MS2k more due to the ION as well.

My ION is in the shop for repairs, second full day there now. I can only say that one needs to review and listen as well as check out the interface of any synth. For me, I do not have the time to learn a deep menu to do a simple thing. Like pan (MS2k, there is a knob almost dead center, ION, deep in the mod matrix (deep to me) no knob). I deal with the pan issue via midi.

I use my MS2k as a midi controller for items like the Arturia MMV, VST synths, Chameleon and so forth. Not a one of them will work with the ION. So don't be fooled by knobs on the surface. I bet the An1x will work fine with the MS2k too. Hind sight, perhaps that would have been a better way to go.

ION and MS2k do not sound alike at all. I can get something similar but it is not the same. With my ears, I say the ION has a thinner sound than the MS2k. The more I work with the ION, I do learn more tricks with it. Maybe in a few years (I had my MS2k for almost 3 years now) I will be able to use them both without much effort. All you read, is based on my experience with them.

The AN1x Assign Knobs are a mixed blessing. You can program each of
the eight Knobs to transmit the MIDI CC of your choice (but not
NRPNs/RRPNs) along with the X/Z access of the Ribbon Control, MW,
Foot Pedals, etc. but, the problem lies in controlling multiple
devices - you can only store one, global configuration for the Assign
Knobs et al. You could of course perform a Bulk Dump of *only* the
System settings to a stand alone MIDI Filer or your SysEx utility and
restore them on the fly but that's kind of a headache.

Alternately, you could use a Environment Layer in Logic or a Mixer
Map in Cubase to remap the default MIDI CCs transmitted by the AN1x
to those expected by your hardware or softsynths (this is the
approache I've taken.) I'm aware of some current MIDI CC remappers
making the rounds - probbably picked up on it at OSXAudio or KVR-VST -
but I'm hard pressed to recall any by name :-/

I think both of us would acknowledge this type of functionality is
still pretty esoteric to a majority of keyboard players users but
given the popularity of these small, mobile controllers perhaps
peoples expectations regarding ease of use are being heigntened...

That is good to know Jon. I am saving this post. I am still in the market for a midi controller and I am still leaning towards Korg microkontroler but it too has some quirks. Behringer just released some controllers as well but I have not had the chance to touch or find anything other than Behringers site to look at... and I have not thought about this for a few weeks either as I don't have the funds to buy... but before I do.. I will dig again and see what I come up with.

For me sure, it is fine to use your synth for a controller once in a while but I really like to have a controller that I can just use just for that VST or other synth (like the darkstar). I sometimes like to have them playing all the tracks at once I am working on so I can fiddle with them a bit... The way I am doing it now, I play back the audio I recorded and fiddle... works but fiddle with it live then reset to record would be more ideal for me... I do things different, I know...

I really like the Korg microKobtrol. It's obviously new substitute for a controller with
full size keys but, those 'springy' mini-key s are indded fun to play with as are the
velocity sensitive pads. What attracts me to the Korg is a) the number of preset
templates provided (which cover 90% of the softsynths I own) and b) the editing
software is OS X ready and appears to be easy to use.

I'm aware of the new Behringer control surface/mixers but I honestly haven't paid too
much attention. I am very interested in that new Yamaha 01x (?) model but, again, I
haven't spent much time on it.

It seems like every time I turn around there's some cool new piece of technology
fueling my case of G.A.S.!!!

In addition to the Korg, I read up a little on the Evolution 33e which appears to have a
little better delivered Win support than Mac support. But there seems to be a few Mac
user's out there sharing there tweaks to the controller maps. The PDFs for this stuff
can be had from the vendor sites.

I Use The AN1x As My Main Controller For Synths, Because Of the Feel Of The
Keyb And the Knobs. But For The CS80v I Use an ensoniq VFXsd Cause It
Because It Has Polyphonic AT.
I've Look Arround For Other Controllers, and really, for the Current Price In
the Market, I'll Get An AN1x Just As A controller. All the New controllers
Just dont Have That "Nice" Synth Keys Feel.

That is why I use my s-80 for the keybed (it's my wife's anyway, she uses is as a piano/organ). I will set up the patches the way I want, twist knobs and other things but I really like the feel of the keys on the s-80 (weighted type plus full range). I am just looking at the knob/slider function not really at the keys but they are handy to press to hear what you are tweaking.

The pads and joystick is keen to my eye on the Korg. I use the darkstar's joystick and really like it doing sweeps. I have a zoom rt 323 with pads that do work fine. The evolutions did not feel right to me and I did not like them as much... Last weekend I played with them again at the local GC. I could not get them to open a korg box. The Korg micro was on display however and I think the feel on the keys on it might be similar.
But that isn't what I am after really. I do need to save settings on it as the vst's I use are different as well as the other synths. It isn't the keys for me, I sub that with a s-80 when I have things set up... Much to think and ponder....

The Pads on the MicroKontrol are okay - they are at least as good as though on most
drum machine and I *think* they are velocity sensitive. The Joystick should be great
for stuff like Zebra or ES2 or that Wavestation softsynth. Heck, I'd like to own a KP2!

The keys on the Korg are light and "springy" (for lack of a better adjective) - and I
mean that in a good way. It was 'fun' to play.

Yes, it saves it settings. You should check out the PDF manual from the Korg site.

You need to provide some details on your set-up to help trouble shoot: What OS are
you running? Mac or Win? What type of MIDI Interface are you using? Have you tried a
bulk dump to any other program?

You might want to search the list archives here at Yahoo! Groups. There have been a
number of WinXP users with reports leaning both ways (don't recall the specifics.)

FWIW, I had a MIDI UNO 1x1 working under WinXP Home Edition on my wifes laptop
but did not test with AN1xEdit only a seperate app specific to another box...
