The official word is that they found and killed a last minute bug, that they released it to be tested and if everything looks kool they will release it. I'm ok with a wait, especially if it means better software. Tho not tooo much of a wait... :) Andre

Soon! Some last minute bugs held up the release, but the fix is with the
beta testers right now. Seriously not much longer now, it'll be worth the
wait. Much better than prematurely releasing a buggy OS and having
everyone bitching, no? :)

2003-04-01 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com
"Basic functionality given the context" depends entirely upon the context of each user though. For instance, when I first started messing with X-Mix, I too wanted the new part to come in at the pattern loop, but not because I wanted to add more parts, just because I thought it would provide more of a safety net when you're playing live so you don't accidentally start a new part too early or late (could be bad with a 4 measure held pad if you miss the Note On for instance). Having played with it some though, I see that it's actually pretty neat being able to drop stuff in when ever, you can transition to a new part by dropping it 1/4 note early, makes a little fill so to speak. Anyway, I can't even believe people are complaining already and they haven't even released the OS and no one's actually USED X-MIX yet. We're SOOOO lucky that we even got this OS, you guys have no idea.... rEalm Besdes, I'm sure there's a lot of people going "X-mix, *shrug* so what?". agreed, but there is a difference, and a significant one at that, between features that would be nice and are wished for, however esoteric, and ones that provide basic functionality given the context of their use. I have to agree here. The omissions seriously hamper the ability to use x-mix live. Imagine accidentally swapping the pattern one bar early and throwing your whole groove off, and having it blast at a much higher volume in context with a different set of sounds! Don't get me wrong, ill still use it, ill probably just sweat a little more about it than id like. Evan Yahoo! Guys, why don't you wait till you at least try the feature before you trash it. The part picks up immediately, at the appropriate time in the sequence. If you swap it in at bar 3, beat 2, it will start the new track immediately at bar 3, beat 2. It doesn't start playing the beginning of the track in the middle of the pattern, that'd be silly. -Aaron --- Evan Riley <NuIndustry1@...> wrote: > I have to agree here. Aaron I can't wait to try it out. I have been reading the thread and watching it go from excited to sceptical. It is kinda sad. I love the fact that work is going into this box that is at the hart of my studio and don't take it for granted. Just wanted to be one more person saying thanks for spending your time applying your skills where I will benefit at no cost. I hope that the OS kicks ass, and I hope that you get some good press on it. But then their rep would suffer . . . doing for "us" is not a wholly selfless act. Which is fine and good business. If not for good business, we would all still buying used MPC60s.

You "can't even believe people are complaining already and they haven't even released the OS and no one's actually USED X-MIX yet." ??? Why not? I can't believe that xmix will not at least start the incoming loop using some sort of quantize to fit the currently playing pattern to the next quarternote or something meaningful (or choosable). I don't have to try it to know if there will be problems or, no, not "problems," that's not fair, but "limitations," if I am to trust your description so far. I understand that there are limitations to everything, and as I said I am happy to get the extra features, BUT, I would would be happier to hear, for example, Aaron tell us, if indeed that is how it works, either "gee we would have loved to do that, but it is absolutely impossible given the current structure of the command stations," OR " we chose to do it this way because of these cool things you can do, like . . . , see just turn your thinking around and see the power you have . . etc." Right? I mean c'mon rEalm, you know I love you, and I know you write the faq, and I love the E-mu guys too, but this *isn't* your baby, even if they gave you some betas. If it were, I know you would have done it better, or you could tell me which one of the statements above is the deal. I think E-mu rocks and I make a point of telling people I meet that I think so. But I won't stop asking for better stuff or pretend that the act of upping the OS and bugfixing is a wholly selfless act on the part of E-mu, especially with a unit still selling retail. They need you and me and all of us to say we love the unit to our friends and in stores and online. Else Creative will wrap it up like poor Ensoniq and poor Sean and Aaron will join Dave R. making soundcards, woo hoo! (I hope to never see that happen). E-mu rocks and I am greedy! :) Ravi

That's all I need to hear and would have waited to say any more, except I had to ask rEalm but he didn't know and before I could wait for your post he started chiding us . . . :) Sorry for freaking out, but see, I have seen Roland *remove* a perfectly working megamix from their grooveboxes and i have seen Yamaha reinvent the method of sampling architecture and purposefully create manuals to cause brain hemorraging and I have seen Waldorf promise an OS update for three years and refuse to fix a bug as obsure as NO downward Portamento and I have even seen a company not allow one to tweak filter resonance on the fly while holding one note dow . . . . WHOOOOPS! :) :) heh, heh . . . I love synths. If they were all perfect I would cry. Aaron you rock! Come to New York and I'll buy ALL the drinks. You too Sean! Ravi

Guys, why don't you wait till you at least try the feature before you
trash it. The part picks up immediately, at the appropriate time in
the sequence. If you swap it in at bar 3, beat 2, it will start the
new track immediately at bar 3, beat 2. It doesn't start playing the
beginning of the track in the middle of the pattern, that'd be silly.

You "can't even believe people are complaining already and they
haven't even released the OS and no one's actually USED X-MIX yet." ???
I understand that there are limitations to everything, and as I said I am happy to get the extra features, BUT, I would would be happier to hear, for example, Aaron tell us, if indeed that is how it works, either "gee we would have loved to do that, but it is absolutely impossible given the current structure of the command stations," OR " we chose to do it this way because of these cool things you can do, like . . . , see just turn your thinking around and see the power you have . . etc."
Right?

"Basic functionality given the context" depends entirely upon the context
of each user though. For instance, when I first started messing with
X-Mix, I too wanted the new part to come in at the pattern loop, but not
because I wanted to add more parts, just because I thought it would
provide more of a safety net when you're playing live so you don't
accidentally start a new part too early or late (could be bad with a 4
measure held pad if you miss the Note On for instance). Having played
with it some though, I see that it's actually pretty neat being able to
drop stuff in when ever, you can transition to a new part by dropping it
1/4 note early, makes a little fill so to speak.
Anyway, I can't even believe people are complaining already and they
haven't even released the OS and no one's actually USED X-MIX yet. We're
SOOOO lucky that we even got this OS, you guys have no idea....
rEalm
Besdes, I'm sure there's a lot of people going "X-mix, *shrug* so what?".
agreed, but there is a difference, and a significant one at that, between
features that would be nice and
are wished for, however esoteric, and ones that provide basic
functionality given the context of their
use.

No no, we all get very emotional over our pet instruments, and I have to say we have been pretty well behaved and Emu has done an exceptional job of getting stuff into the OS. Huge difference between the current version and the one I played with at Namm three years ago?!? Seems like yesterday.... :) If I have to wait much longer I might explode! Andre

Thanks for the clarification Aaron. Dont get me wrong, like i said, ill be more than happy to use the X-mix, I just thought that was a shortcoming. Picking up in the same spot in the new pattern should cover that base.(i hope!) Evan

Uh oh! Now you guys hav done it, pissed off the guy writing the OS, not good. I personally think silly things are fun though, it could lead to a whole new genre "silly beats".
