n00b looking for some help

2008-03-12 by spot_lizard

Hi all,

Well, I pulled the trigger and purchased an XL-7 from e-bay.
Cosmetically, it's in very nice condition but as I started reading
the manual and finding my way around I noticed that some things
didn't seem quite right.

1. An apparent lack of patterns and songs. Looks like these may have
been deleted by the previous owner.

2. Demo song screen not available. OK, I hate Demo songs as much as
the next person but the manual says that if I hold down the Song and
Pattern buttons at the same time I should see a demo song screen.
When I do this I don't see the screen shown in the manual. There is
no mention of a demo song. This is a minor annoyance because things
just aren't as they should be.

So, my questions are:

1. I've downloaded the Songs and Patterns zip file from E-Mu's
website, together with e-loader. If I hook this up to a USB cable can
I just copy (download) these back to the unit ? The e-loader manual
makes this seem like a drag and drop operation. Is there any
special 'magic' to this or things I need to be careful of ?

2. Is it possible to delete/restore the demo song, or am I just not
doing something right ?

I really want to get into this thing and start playing around with
it, so it's quite frustrating to me that things are not where they
should be. I have many other synths (a Triton, JD-800, K2000 and
several other E-Mu's), so I'm not frightened by the thought of
updating/modifying the internal settings.

Thanks so much in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Best regards,
Mark

hi and welcome,
I to recentlypurchased an xl-7 and am still getting around some of its quirks i recomend
turning on the machine while holding the 2 curser buttons down and running some tests
make sure to have a midi cable plugged into midi in and out for the loopback test and test
it in auto test mode then do a reset all data function suppose you could do it in the other
order...this should put your concerns about getting a faulty unit to rest....when the demo
songs are gone there gono...kind of a nice feature i think that seperates this box from alot
of other groovebox garbage...hate having tons of terrible preset patterns taking up
space...although i think you can get the files and transfer them back to the box via midi...
enjoy your machine man....i've had tons of gear as well and have had nothing as remotely
cool as this beast it is sure to go down in music gear history and fetch mad$$$$$$in the
not to distant future...hope i was remotely helpful let me know if ii can help with anything
else
cheers

Hi Z,

Thanks for the suggestions. I went through the self tests and
everything checks out fine.

Now my next problem is getting the songs and patterns back into the
unit via e-loader.

XP SP2 does not recognize the XL-7 via MIDI. It seems to require
special drivers. Since I did not get any when I purchased it does
anyone know if they are available for download ?

Worst case scenario I could use MIDI, but since USB is easy and
convenient I'd like to start there if I could.

Cheers,
Mark

Re: n00b looking for some help - SOLVED USB issue

2008-03-12 by spot_lizard

For some reason, the e-loader version I downloaded corrupted the USB
driver folder, so the drivers were not where they were supposed to
be. I thought I was done for, since I didn't have a CD with any
drivers on, so I downloaded e-loader again and installed it in a
different partition. That worked ! I can now see the drivers.

Thanks everyone !
Mark
