Hello.. What you suggest is not actually possible, but there is an alternative. If you own the E4 series samplers (Emu, of course), you can burn your own ROMs that can be used in your command station, however, the blank ROMs are very difficult to find. I think I have all my info right..lol. -Daniel

IIRC, only the "ultra" series samplers can burn the blank ROMs.
on a similar topic, does anyone know where i can find "sample CDs" of the
emu ROMs? i'm not interested in getting into a bidding war on ebay to fill
xl-7 with the classic ROMs when, in theory, i should be able to download
and burn all of them for almost free. sure, i wouldn't be able to use them
in my xl7, but i could use them in my a4000.

Correct, you need an Ultra and the $200-300 flash ROM. As far as sample CDs, you can probably buy them from E-Mu. Note, however, that most of the interesting parts of the sounds of the ROMplers comes from the presets, not the samples. The filters, patchcords, modulation, etc makes the box sound the way it does. You should check out the ProteusX or EmulatorX soft-synths and sample libraries - they'll have the preset goodness that the modules have. -Aaron PS. you weren't looking for a "warez" sample CD, were you...

yech... soft-synths...

i'm waiting to hear back from emu about availability through "official"
channels. honest question, though, is; can they claim copyright on a
sample that's sold on a ROM? and if it's sampled as a patch, then not only
would it be "better" than the raw sample (as you indicate above), but also
less encumbered by copyright.
obviously if someone copied a sample cd there are copyright issues, but if
someone sampled sound from a rompler i don't think there would be any
issues. if anyone claimed copyright over sounds that came from the rompler
they'd own part of the music you created with it.

given that, would anyone (including emu's lawyers) be likely to have any
practical or ideological objections to a home-made copy of a sample CD? or
a sample CD made from sampling the patches?
if anyone knows where i can find one...

I haven't shopped for Emu EOS Sample disks on e-bay in over a year, but the used to run $10 and up for single CDs. I have a few Emu III disk, but personally don't care for them. I have several in the Formula 4000 series and prefer those. I have one loop sample 2-disk set, and have no use for that. A while ago someone was selling that one on e-bay for something like $70. In bundles (eg 13 disk sets, etc.) the per disk price was usually cheaper. Sometimes, you can find low end samplers bundled with tons of disks that might be attractive--you can get the disks and unload the sampler. Someone used to sell (and perhaps still sells) hard drives with sample disks already on there. Regarding the evolution of samples presets that Aaron spoke of, that may be why I prefer the Formula 4000 CD-ROMS to the Emulator-III disks--the presets seem to be more creative. If you need a SCSI cable to connect a SCSI drive to to an Ultra Sampler, I picked up a load of about 40 brand new ones--after refusing to buy single ones at overinflated prices.
