do i have to hand make arps? can i load them or record them as midi
files into the mp7?

You can send a sysex of arps to your E-Mu. I have seen one for the
TCSY rom floating around. You can also get different arps that come
with some of the roms.

But, I would encourage you to try making your own arps. It is not
that difficult. Try a short cut to start:

1. Make a very simple percussion pattern in arp form.
2. Vary extension and interval.

Once you've done that, make another one that jives with the first
one. (Extension and interval need not be the same as the 1st one.)
Make more.

I believe someone wrote procedures here a few years ago on how to
set up polyrhythms with different time signatures using overlapping
arps. (I tried it at the time, but never got back to it.)

I haven't heard your music, but it might work for your style.

Hope this helps.

PS: So far as I know, there are no repositories of user developed
arp banks. Also, a few years ago someone started work on a midi-to-
arp conversion program (or was it the other way around?). As I
recall, it worked as long as you didn't violate any ofthe rules. (I
don't recall a version after the 1st or 2nd beta version. It may
still be in Files.)

Yup; I recalled correctly. It was done by Kevin Johnson and its in the
Apps folder. Hope it works for you. I seem to recall a readme file.
If you use the program, make sure you don't violate any of the rules.

And since it represents a labor of love that must have taken a bit of
time and was generously given away, don't expect it to (1) be perfect
or (2) have the polish of commercially released software. If its
helpful, great. If not, perhaps with your knowledge of C++ you can
improve it.

Hope this helps.

cool thanks again steve! i'll have a look at it.
and regarding you last message, i have made my own arps before and i
like being able to control what my arps sound like but the main
reason i want to know is for triggering drumloops :)

make this!!

Hello, I see that I'm not the only one to use arp for make rythm. But I have never make extension or interval because of the fact that the percussion kit don't allaw you to make this ( The kick is always on the C C# the snare on D E F the toms on G A B and the charley on F# G# etc...it may varie with différents kit ). So the arp may be long for 1 2 or 3 bar at max ( because of the 32 steps of the arp that is already not very so bad )

So my question is:
Do you make a 12 interval arp or do make your own preset using tunning and transpose to recycle your arp rythm? Perhaps you use this only for percussion.

Thanks.

I'd be interested to hear some of your techniques for creating/using
arps.

You are right; the drum map stays the same. The effect that I get
with extensions is this: the rhythm is played of different
instruments with each extension. Here's a simple example:

Let's say with a 1 measure arp the basic arp is kick and snare.
Then I extend it once so now the same rhythm is on toms.
(plus other possible extensions--rhythm 1 played on other
instruments.

I can then make another arp that has a different rhythm--perhaps
kick and snare on the 2nd extension.

Basically I am overlapping arps.

Yes, I have only used this method for percussion.

BTW: here are links to posts on the issue of creating polyrhythms
using arps of different lengths.

Re: mp-7 arp editing

what im trying to do is to get midi to play some slices i have in rcg-
audio sfz. you can use it to play samples mapped to midi notes. i'm
using it in the same way you would use a drum loop in recycle.

i did what you said and took some time to edit the arp exactly like
the midi file but when i had auditioned it it didnt sound right.

i set the i made the keyrange from c1 to g#1 where the notes are
triggered from. then i made the keys go from 0 to +9 cause the notes
are all 1/8 notes in length but 7 and 8 are 1/16th notes. in a one bar
loop.

but what i get when i play it back is something totaly different. i
have the patter at 00 bank 0 and have it set to master like the
manual says so i can hear it while im editing but this is not it.

also if i am not in arp mode i see msb 15 lsb 00 i guess thats the
sysex parameter for the arp?

If you use PRESET>EDIT>TRANSPOSE you can move the kit up and down the
keyboard chromatically

[xl7] using a laptop

2005-08-18 by jacob myers

Hello all, I use an xl7 but this is more about recording with a laptop. I just purchased the tascam 122 usb soundcard. I want to get a laptop and am wondering the minimum specs I should go with when recording music. I have an 200 gb external harddrive that i can use with it as well as a 512 ram memory card that i could upgrade. I dont want to get something that will be too slow to run programs to use. Thank you
