Cleaning the Big Knob

Cleaning the Big Knob

2005-04-12 by just john

Hi, all.

I've started getting the famous flakey data knob behavior. Not bad
yet, but getting worse.

Looking at my xl7 message archives from 2002 or so, I see
recommendations of squirting de-oxidizer stuff on the contacts. So I
want to verify WHERE to squirt the stuff, once I've got it. And I've
come back to the group to ask:

Does anybody have a photo or graphic with an arrow pointing to the
ideal spot, and does anybody have any special warnings I should heed?

Is this still considered the best way to clean the contacts?

Re: Cleaning the Big Knob

Hey John

I squirted some contact cleaner down into the pot of the Big Knob - it
did help some but not completely, my understanding is that the rotary
brush contacts wear out and the pots need to be replaced. They cost
about $10, available from EPR Pro (Emu's service contractor) and my
understanding is that it is easy to remove the worn out pot and
install the new one, altho I have not done it yet. That guy at EPR
said "Easy" -

good luck - keep us posted

Ed

Hey Ed

Okay, ultra-dumb followup query: Which "down" do you mean? As I
recall from my look at it yesterday, besides the pot's shaft, there's
an opening in the back of the potentiometer. And I recall the
warning to avoid the grease that provides the turning tension (or is
that only in the little knobs?) So, squirt down along the shaft, or
squirt in from the back? (Which is "down" for me, since I prop the
box upright most of the time.)

(I'm still loving that World Expediton ROM, by the way!)

Just posted a photo in the 'photos' section, pic 14 the last one on
page 2..
best one if you can get it is caig 'cailube mcl' moving contact
lubricant.
It pretty much the industry standard for bring back pots, sliders and
encoders. Top stuff
Or get some cheap servisol super 10 switch cleaning lubricant.
You dont need very much, just the smallest amount. if you use to much
it will break down the greese on the shaft so it will end up feeling
gritty and nasty if your not very carefull.
Just spray it on the actual track, nowhere else!.
If that dosent work then you can replace it. Have to be carefull un-
soldering it though, its a double sideded plated through board so you
could end up lifting tracks if your no very carefull..
Hope that helps :o)

Thanks for the picture.

I am unfamiliar with you use of "track" in the following two places.
Could you please clarify? Thanks.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for!

Now, when I mess it up completely, it'll be MY fault! (I'm very
posessive that way.)

Re: Cleaning the Big Knob

meaning the actual 'track' the wiper of of pot rubs against which is
the swith part of the encoder. a form of carbon contact.

meaning PCB tracks that can be easly damaged by over heating them or
not clearing all the solder around the component leg and lifting the
PCB track away with it when it is removed.

Hope that makes sense!
Cheers

you shouldnt mess up if your carefull. Just remember not to use to
much, infact the smalleset amount.
When you spay it leave it a few minutes before you tun the encoder..

Re: Cleaning the Big Knob

Would it make sense to wiggle the knob shaft side-to-side a bit right
after squirting, to spread it around?

(Gee, I don't know why spammers used to think this was a sensible
place to post porn spam, do you?)

Re: Cleaning the Big Knob

2005-04-15 by gonzinigonz

just to confirm that your NOT spraying the contact cleaning on / down
the side of the shaft!!
All this will do is de-greese the encoder and it will feel nasty to
use after.
Your just spraying the base of the encoder where the electrical
contacts are. Theres a small opening where you can get it in there,
near where the 3 legs come out of the part.
As for wiggling the shaft.. the cleaner will spread over the surface
by itself. No need to wiggle the shaft!
Just by the action of using the encoder normally after will have the
right effect.(if the cleaning works!)
Cheers

By the way, I finally got around to doing this last night (lots of
moving and packing/unpacking between your message and now) and it
works great!

Thanks.

Now I have most of a can of spray de-gunker left over ...

(Now, back to the group's normal diet of penis enhancement spams. My
group ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/monohedral_cathedral/ ) seems to
avoid them.)

Well,

looks like i'm the next one that has to do this.

Unfortunately the picture that was mentioned in this thread is not
online anymore, so i wanted to ask if anyone could make one, as i don't
fully grasp this explanation on where to apply the lubricant.
