What's the max levels you get from the main outs?

What's the max levels you get from the main outs?

2005-03-24 by paolovalladolid

I've started recording our band's jam sessions and am learning all
about input levels for recording.

I use a MOTU 828MkII and AudioDesk 2 software to record. The highest
level I can get out of the XL7, according to the AudioDesk Audio
Monitor window, is around -12db to -10db.

Is this typical for you guys when you record with your Command Stations?

The manual says the max level is +6db, but I haven't found a patch
that loud.

REALLY depends on the patch. A good kick hitting the resonance of the
filter... you can clip a mixer easily.

It has a pretty wide dynamic range. A good compressor can level that
out a bit, tho may not be appropriate for all uses.

I'm just trying to match the XL7's levels to those of my bandmembers
when I record us. The AudioDesk manual just says to get everything as
close to 0db as possible without clipping and doesn't really say any
more about controlling the input levels. So at present, I have them
turn their preamps down to match the XL7.

At our last jam session, I tried to jam with them on the CP70 patch
from the Vintage Collection ROM. The composer of this particular
music liked this sound the best out of the electric piano sounds I
have in the XL7. Unfortunately, I couldn't get more than -24db to
-20db output for that patch even after I did a Quick Edit and bumped
the max velocity to 127. So I was drowned out by the other two.
Fortunately, she's willing to consider an organ sound as an
alternative - those seem to be loud enough to hang with the other
instruments.

Well, remember too that you're talking about mixing musicians. They
often don't understand proper recording levels and crank everything
they own up to 10. When dealing with electronic gear, the output levels
are often much lower than guitarists have their own gear set to;
especially if the guitarists are using distortion (basically
super-compression) and other effects that can make apparent volume much
much higher than an un-processed sound.

Again, I might recommend a compressor for your effects chain over the
xx7... if not only to put yourself on the same playing field as some of
the distortion + preamp folks.

I am very lucky to be in a band where the musicians listen to me when
I ask them to set their preamp levels. :)

I'll take your recommendation of a compressor into consideration. For
now I guess I'll keep recording everybody at -12 db.
