Hola Folks

Hola Folks

2004-07-02 by jaxlore

Just purchased my xl-7 off of e-bay should be here next week. Can't
wait to get to work. I have few years toying with cubase/reason
combo and while they are powerful tools i just never can seem to lay
down anything that really ups the ante. So i figured it was time to
jump into the hardware sequencer foray and see what may come. This
is a great group here lots of knowledgable folks.

thanks

greetings comrad,

personally I'd stay away from the hardward sequencer. Would you like to strain while looking at a small usually colorless screen or a computer monitor??? A good and safe way to go, especially if you are beginning with midi, is to pull all your sounds from hardware while sequencing your beats/songs on a big beautiful computer screen. If you're having trouble laying down acceptable tracks...the best advice I can give is to keep soakin up as much tips and tricks from your favorite artists/producers by listening to their music. Cuz trust me...software sequencers were designed to make life much easier for the modern day producer...and they do.

learn the program inside and out...and enjoe the X- Lead....Lord knows how many knocks I've made with it!

LOL. This is sorta like posting "Ford Rules" on a Corvette mailing
list...

Use the best of both worlds i reckon..
I dont personally find a mouse and qwerty keyboard too interactive
for making music. i still like hardware sequncers with big pads to
bash and the like.. I also find that all the flash graphics a bit
distracting and the monitor in my face a bit to much.
Dont get me wrong though, you cant beat a graphical representation of
midi data in a track. It is much easier that way to get right in
there quickly. Also when the MPC is pumping, i havant heard a PC keep
time like that yet..
Ive always had hardware, so thats why i guess. If your just starting
out the PC route is proberly your cheapest option power vs cost.
Just my 2 cents

I chose the Command Station because after years of messing with software I find a well-
designed hardware sequencer much more conducive to creativity. Software sequencers
have their place (namely, editing), but by and large they're little more than glorified tape
recorders. As nice as a 30" Cinema Display might be, music is about what you hear, not
what you see, and a mouse, even a multi-button mouse, is still no match for dedicated
hardware controllers.

There's a reason why big Hollywood studios (film or music) still use massive mixing
consoles alongside their ProTools rigs, and it's not nostalgia.

I gotta disagree, there are definitely benefits to making music with a
hardware sequecner. Hands on control of more than one parameter, the fact
taht you're forced to make music by ear and not by sight (scary thought I
know). It is easier to do a lot of things on a software sequencer, but as
I'm finding out, easier isn't always better.

Anyway, really just trying to say that there's a time and a place for
both, and neither is necccesarily better than the other.

It's really a preference thing I guess, but after trying Cubase,
Reason and the lot, I just figured it was time to do something
different. Also if I ever get beyond the tinkerer stage i really want
to do a live show thats more then just staring at a laptop. If this
works out i will probably add a sampler but my wife wants some v-drums
so we will see who wins. Should have the baby by monday. Just printed
out the 347 page manual so i have to reading to do.
