Which are the best ROMs?

Which are the best ROMs?

2004-07-07 by _5ht

Hello,

I am a new member here, although I have browsed before. I am looking
to buy a PX-7 (it's just too sexy, and I want the Emu sound).

ROMs seem to be going fast. I am trying to choose two (I'd like to
leave one slot open for now) from the following:

proteus 2000
pure phatt
beat garden
xl-7 rom
sounds of ZR
peter Z orchestra

I have other synths so I do not need many electronic sounds,
although if the xl-7 rom is super-cool I may want to go for it. Can
you guys help with some suggestions? I know I want the vintage
collection rom and will keep an eye out for that on ebay. Pure phatt
also sounded great from the samples I heard on the Emu site.

Hey there,
I'm pretty new to the wonderful world of E-MU, so take my comments
with a grain of salt. I've got an XL-7 with an additional Pure Phatt
ROM installed. Here's my opinions of both:

XL-7 ROM: Awesome. Simply awesome. The drums, the basses, the pads,
the leads - everything just shines with quality sound. My friend (who
is a real audiophile) came over to my house and was blown away by how
clean the presets were. I would recommend this ROM to anyone who
wants fantastic synth sounds. I think it's incredible.

Pure Phatt ROM: I was VERY disappointed by this one. I read a million
reviews of this ROM ahead of time, and everyone kept saying the same
things: most of the presets are virtually unusable. I chose to ignore
them - I shouldn't have. A HUGE number of the presets are guitar
samples, and a good number of those are just wah wah strumming. I
don't find much use for them, but that's just me. I can imagine some
other E-MU users creating some damn good songs with those presets.
Having said that, the quality of the presets are really good. The
Pure Phatt ROM isn't all bad, however.....The basses are really good,
and the drums are simply amazing! I haven't heard the Protean drums
ROM yet (though I have one arriving shortly), but the Pure Phatt
drums are good and "huge" sounding. There's a good variety of hard
hitting hip hop drums. I would seriously consider selling this ROM if
it weren't for the amazing drums.

And there you have it - my two cents.

From the last half dozen times this question has come up in the last few
months, I would say the answer is pretty subjective and highly dependant on
planned synth usage, music genre played and just personal taste. I
listened to the demos and knew what I wanted to try for what I wanted to
do......

Definitely the P2000 ROM, that's a must IMO. The other is harder to say,
but I'm guessing the Sounds of the ZR will get the most votes.

My apologies for bringing up an old topic--the search function could
not yield useful information.

I think my question could be rephrased: which ROMs have quality
sounds, and which do not. I may have mentioned this in the original
questions, but I have enough synths where I do not need more synth
sounds (unless they are just fantastic). I could use more accoustic
sounds (besides the protean rom) and maybe some orchestral sounds--
IF they are good.

If anyone else would care to help me out, I would appreciate it. I
ordered by PX-7 yesterday--can't wait to get it.

Re: Which are the best ROMs?

2004-07-09 by Fab Claxton

I just received my Protean Drums ROM (which you will have shortly in
the PX-7) and the Protozoa ROM the other day. I am extremely pleased
with both of these. The Drums ROM is packed with so many great,
realistic sounding samples - it's almost ridiculous. As for the
Protozoa.....I am very, VERY pleasantly surprised. I've heard a lot
of bad things about this ROM, but I'm not sure why. It suits my needs
perfectly. I have the XL-7 (which is great for synth tones), I have
the Pure Phatt (which is great for hip hop drums), so I really wanted
something that could give me some decent "bread and butter" sounds,
some orchestral sounds, and some exotic ethnic instruments. The
Protozoa provides all three of these things in spades. I can't
compare the sounds on the Protozoa to their newer counterparts (ie:
Pop ROM, Orchestral Sessions 1 and 2, and the World Expedition), as
I've never heard any of them. I'm sure the newer ROMS blow the sounds
on the Protozoa away, but I would need another xx-7 (and a lot more
money) to buy those ROMs. With the Protozoa, you get those sounds all
on one ROM. For my needs/tastes, it's perfect. I would say that
the "bread and butter" sounds are alright, the orchestral sounds are
surprisingly good, and the ethnic sounds are very good. The thing
with giving you advice on ROMs (and music itself, for that matter) is
that it's very subjective. What sounds great to me might sound
absolutely terrible to you. Having said that, I would recommend the
Protozoa if you want a decent, "all-in-one" ROM. I might be alone in
that opinion, but there you have it. I've heard some really great
things about the Pop ROM for acoustic sounds as well.
