Grr!

Grr!

2004-01-08 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

My XL-7's possessed or something, last night it was acting up like crazy!
Doing all of the following:

- Presets were panning weirdly, even with no patchcords controlling this.
- Two of my snare presets are now insanely loud, I have turn the AmpVol
down to -50 or so just to make it reasonable, with only 1 layer too. They
were just fine previously at +4 too.
- Randomize Preset takes close to 20 seconds to do it's thing now???
- The data wheel will sometimes scroll the opposite way I'm turning it.
- The menus change screens very slowly (5 seconds ???) while Patterns are
playing back.

Anyone seen any of these before?

I just had to compact last week, so I don't think that's it. All of the
patterns are pretty light information wise, so I don't think that's it
either. Damn, I hope I don't need another XX-7, money's too tight right
now :( Although it would be nice to have a new PX-7...

I know that Aaron will post that this is a bad idea, however I think if all
else fails...

1) Backup all your patches and do a full midi dump to a NEW patch library
(If the patches themselves are corrupted you won't want to overwrite your
old ones) etc.

2) re-flash your memory

What I think it may be is Cell decay (Leading to corruption) from the
various patch writes. You may be hitting it first because you have
consistently been using your Command Station more than most of us on this
list. I think that when you reflash it must check to see if the cell has
gone bad and writes to an alternate cell that is fine. The compact
operation forces a lot of writes across a large number of cells, that is one
of the reasons it isn't an automatic function - and it may have been the
straw that broke the camels back.

Just a thought,
Andre

Thanks for the ideas, but I tried a Reset last night and it's still there.
Unless you mean reflash as in reload the OS? Hopefully that fixes it,
right now the whole box feels very sluggish, and it's hard to work with it
like that. It does seem like I didn't see this issues before my last
Compact, so hopefully that's what caused it and Reflash works.

SNIP

A few weeks/months ago I experienced problems (OS lock up, random
reboot, etc.). Some of the advice I got (including some from you),
included checking/changing power cord, reseating SIMMS, double
checking all internal connectors, etc.

This solved my problem. If you haven't tried these first, I
recommend them.

And if it works, let's put together a troubleshooting flowchart for
the files section. Perhaps a series of simple HTML pages. Any HTML
programmers want to create (1) an index and (2) a template?

Try walking through the diagnostics. Careful though, some of them blow
away all your user data (they'll mention if they do beforehand). If
it's a hardware problem, it should find it...

Well, maybe I can give back some ideas to help repay you for all the
advice you have been able to give.

It seems your hardware options have nearly all been tried. before
moving on to fully reloading the OS, I would suggest you do the
following:

Make sure no midi cables are plugged in (I have seen bizarre things
when a midi buffer overrun happens in my XL-1's chain, IE: during
SMIDI sample dumps) and restart.

Unplug the hardware from the power source long enough to let the
capacitors discharge (~10 minutes would be more than enough)

Remove all simms but one and try it in each slot to test for a power
surge affecting the this path. If the problem is suddenly gone,
repeat but with a different simm each time (looking for some
conbination that causes the problem)

If all else fails, you should consider getting whatever data you can
out of the system and reloading the software, taking special note to
observe any abnormalities with the reload process.

Re: [xl7] Re: Grr!

2004-01-08 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Thanks, I'll try this tonight along with the diagnostics too. It's so
weird that it happens like this, was working fine during HEAVY usage for
days prior, then all of sudden last night it freaked out. Normally
wouldn't be concerned too much, but right now the only thing I pretty much
use it for is live sets (and it's ALL I use for that currently), and with
some bigger gigs coming up in month or so, I obviously want everything as
rock solid as possible.

Maybe it just wants a new paint job? :)

Could you have some weird MIDI loop going on? I had a
hard time getting my maching working one day and I
realized I had created a crazy loop.

I know this is serious, but since no one else has made the

proposal of Holy water. However, I fear it will be ready for its new
paint job afterwards.
