PX-7 Questions

PX-7 Questions

2003-12-15 by Matt Picone

Hi

I'm back! Thinking of adding a PX-7 for fun when a drummer can't turn
up.

I read two entries in the FAQ that need some exploration first though...

Can anyone speak more about...

1. The limits of creating custom drumsets.

2. The challenge of handling mutually exclusive groups, such as
open/closed hihats

Thanks,

-m@

you can't create custom drumsets.

ok, only kinda sorta true...

there is no "drum mode" where you can assign a sound
per key, so the less clever will stop there.

that said, by using a combination of note ranges,
instrument layers and preset linking you can create
a totally custom kit with this limitation: it can have
a max of 12 waves total...so that could be 12 different
drums or 6 drums with dual-stacked waves, etc.

do this over 2 channels, and suddenly you can double
the numbers...

so it can be done, and in fact, it offers more
flexibility than many devices with a dedicated
"drum mode".

given your programming skill, Matt, I know you would
be able to not just use this method, but do cool stuff
with it! ;)

there is a control for that stuff, with many groups
available...check the manual for details.

Hey Matt, welcome to the group, nice to see another Virus user here :)

1. As was mentioned before, there is no way to assign drum parts to
individual keys. You need to use Keymapping and the the 4 layers,
combined with Preset linking to get yourself a custom 12 voice kit, which
really isn't as bad as it sounds. I mean, how often do you need more than
12 drum sounds in a song.

However, because you're talking about the PX-7, you also get to use the
special features that ONLY THAT ROM has, namely the ability to mix and
match layer in a preset, while retaining the factory keymapping. It's
much fancier sounding than it is, basically you can swap out things like
HH's and percussion parts by changing the Preset Layer. Full info in the
PX-7 manual, available on the Emu site (or I can send you the Drum ROM
manual).

2. The XX-7's have quite a few exclusive groups you can assign drum sounds
too, for doing the CHH/OHH thing.
