Sounds like a short to me. The VDC connector is indeed a power socket.
Completing the circuit with the lamp is causing a system short - if its
getting to the main board (LEDs flashing etc) it could be a short with the
power supply - check the wires going from the PSU to the lamp connector.

Also, call E-mu service 'cause what the hell do I know? ;D
