Malik, let me see if I understand your problem.  You can edit note 
durations (note lengths) in edit mode AFTER you record a pattern, 
but you cannot figure out how to set the note length (duration/gate) 
when you are in grid mode record.  Is that the problem?

If so try the following steps in pattern mode/view:

(1) find an empty pattern
(2) press record twice

Do you see something that looks like the following (A or B)?

A:

B:01.1 Gat:0% _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

===============================
T01 GRID K:C1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

(3A) If you see A, turn any of the 16 knobs.

Gat(e) should go from 0% to 100% when you turn a knob. Knob 1 should 
change the gate (% duration of resolution) of the first beat in the 
grid; knob 16 should change the gate of the last beat in the grid.

(3B) If you see B, press the button which changes the knob functions.
(4B) Does it now look like A? If so, turn the knobs.  Does Gat(e) go 
from 0% to 100%?

If not, what happens?

NOTE: You can also change gate by moving the cursor under a grid 
step and twisting the big knob.

QUESTION: Are you simply pressing the 16 buttons to toggle between 
on and off and not getting the gate to change from 76%?  

If so, all you need to do is use either of the two methods above--
(1) change the big knob to set the gate that the 16 buttons toggle 
on and off or (2) change any of the 16 little knobs to change the 
gate at the desired beat.

Once you change the gate in the display, that becomes the new level 
that the buttons toggle between.
